I've been dealing with some health issues (nothing unusual for me, so no worries; also my husband takes care of me the same way Vaughn does here lol), which kept me from posting for a while. Now I'm trying to get back into it 💀
As you can see, I've also been experimenting a bit. I have 0 training in animation, but I've always admired it, so I decided to try animating something small myself. These are some of my older attempts, I've created more since then (you can find them on my Patreon), and I even revisited Hedwig's leg animation to make it smoother and as if she's rushing forward. I still have a lot to learn, but I'm really excited about it!
Would you watch an animated movie about Pticenoga and Vaughn? P.S. - don't forget to pay attention to the frogs 🐸

Just adding in passing: this is why folktales in cultures that coexist with glaciers so often feature tropes suggesting that the glaciers are haunted by something—routinely, the spirits of the unquiet dead. And from the dead (or whatever else is up there, buried in the ice) come all kinds of weird and uncanny noises…
In the Year of the Horse, let us all truly appreciate what this mythical creature has done for surrealist memes. I don’t think there is another animal that has inspired such unhinged internet images. We should all be both eternally grateful and forever afraid.
What I dislike about essayists that talk about Cats
I've gone ahead and started to rewatch a lot of Cats analysis videos such as Sideways' video focusing on the music for 2019 or Lindsay Ellis' essay about 2019 as well and there's one specific detail that bothers me: the whole "horny cats" idea. This isn't to say that I think the provocative aspects of cats is bad (ex: the rum tum tugger) but I think this narrative towards Cats is one that is very tired. Physical touch is used as a motif throughout the show, especially in the parts where Grizabella is on stage and is trying to make contact with the rest of the jellicles. Much like how there's moments in theater where the singing isn't occurring in the reality of the story, I believe this motif in cats of physical touch being in such a way doesn't mean that this is some sex cult thing. Cats show affection through various physical means, whether it be headbutting, rubbing or full on plopping themselves on the floor and over someone's shoes. This language of interaction is translated in the stage show as being more intimate since, well, all of the cats in the clan are rather close. It's the whole reason why, as a collective, they immediately reject Grizabella when she appears the first time. I get that the 98' recording does have some of the shots focus on specific aspects of the actors' bodies as they perform these numbers, but that's a problem with the recording, not really something that reflects on the stage show itself. For example: Victoria's solo is focused more on the gracefulness and limberness the cat has since she's one of the younger cats who happens to be coming of age. It isn't really meant to be seen in a sexualized light unless you yourself make it so. That's the difference between seeing all the closeups in the 98' recording vs actually seeing the stage show. It gets a bit annoying to see people talk about cats as "the horny cat show /neg" when the whole physical touch bit has a purpose in the story. Hell, I will give Sideways props for giving a solid analysis of the story + explaining that whole motif as well.
While I agree that those takes are to a certan degree exaggerated and overblown, usually nfor the shock value of it, I disagree with the statement that the sensual and horny isn't part of what Cats is. Cuz Cats absolutely is a sensual show, and it was intended to be sensual and to a certain point horny, especially if you look at how Gillian Lynn, the original choreographer was directing specific actors. She literally was telling Victoria actresses that certain moves and expressions in the white cat solo were supposed to look like orgasming, bits of Demeter's choreography in Macavity were guided by the "the man was wonderful when he made love to me but I hated him" or however the line went, and Tugger was absolutely supposed to be a rock star of the 80s and all that comes with that
Is the show much more sanitised now? Yes, the choreography changed over time, the actors change and not everyone is as committed to the vibe but there are still plenty of points where it is very sensual. The butt wiggles, the leg scratches, the stretches etc. Add to that very athletic actors in skintight unitards and the visual you get is a very sensual, maybe even at points bit horny show. Trying to pretend it's not is a poor reading of it at best and overlooking parts of the show itself at worst
Is that take overblown and exaggerated, especially in certain media? Yes, absolutely. But at the same time trying to go hard in the other direction and claiming it doesn't have those elements it's massively underplaying it

Additionally, what I think is important to note that Cats treats its own sensuality with the utmost grace and sincerity.
Victoria is entering puberty, she's discovering her changing body and has her first orgasm & her first time having sex during the White Cat Lift, and during all that, she's the literal embodiment of purity. She's the white cat.
Having sexual or sensual experiences doesn't take away any of the purity or innocence of Cats' characters, which you don't find often in theater, especially not in the early 80s. Gillian Lynne made her choreography unapologetically horny in many places, and that sincerity was the point. You're being made to see it in a sexualized light, deliberately, and it's not at all shy or coy about it.
It's self-expression in the purest form: joy, love, sadness, fear, grief, anger, and yes, being really fucking horny, because those were things that Gillian Lynne thought were important, and with how incredibly cat-like the entirety of Cats' choreography is, I'm inclined to agree.
And yea, people who think Cats' horniness is cringe or whatever either hate fun, or they are irony-poisoned. Or Catholics, perhaps.
Shoving everything Cats has to say to the side and focussing on the sex-and-death-cult misconception is a very tired point, indeed. But I have found that the average theater-goer seldom looks beyond the lyrics and their own shallow comprehension of the choreography, and we'll just have to live with that. :')

I just imagine looking at some huge-ass room of server racks and thinking about how many hours of my life are contained there (both reading fic and writing it), how many people I've met and known and loved because of the stories stored there

I think so much about the food people ate pre-Columbian exchange. Huge parts of cuisine extremely important on both sides of the pond just didn't exist.
You've probably heard a little about what was brought over from the New World, corn, potatoes, cocoa, cassava, peanuts, chili peppers, avocadoes, cranberries, pumpkins, and the like. Imagine cooking without chili! Without potatoes! Modern Indian cuisine contains enormous amounts of potatoes and we just didn't have those for the vast majority of history. The best of the nightshades all on one contiguous hunk of land. Hell, tomatoes! Almost forgot about those.
But we don't often look at what the Old World had. Wheat! Barley! Rice! A profusion of incredible grains, really, the finest poaceae has to offer. Carrots! Tons of rosaceous plants like apples and cherries and pears and peaches and apricots! Grapes! Soy and Bamboo! Okra and watermelon! All these things were simply never found in the Americas. The grains one is the wildest for me, the variety of grains available across Eurasia and Africa was truly astounding.
You know what binds together the food of all cultures across the world? Onions. Onions are fucking everywhere. There's probably onions growing near you right now. Allium Gang Unite.

Basically this is the same message as the previous video I shared by this creator. But it’s just an older TikTok. Like they have mentioned, it seems like this argument keeps cycling around every few months. It’s not hard to understand. If you don’t support and encourage writers, then they’re going to give up and quit writing. Simple as that. The community side of fanfic and AO3 has died off. Writers are leaving. AI writing, puritans and the “fandom police” are taking over. Please, just support those of us that are left.
They don't even engage with our long ass fics when they are completed. Whenever I post my final chapter on one of my novel length fics, I never see an uptick in comments with new usernames. We don't even get additional engagement when we do cross that finish line. So, motivation to complete fics is basically at an all time low across the board.
Why complete something when there is going to be nothing positive from it? Like that’s why so many writers are going fuck it because we keep pulling the damn leave and no treats are coming out.
If someone likes what you write, most can’t even be bothered to hit a damn button on a page let alone comment. However god forbid you write something that someone takes issue with because they’ll harass you for weeks, blame you for their self harm and send you pictures of it.
The second one is a true story that happened to my partner and it just idk man. What’s the fucking point of it when any interaction is going to negative to nothing. I have so many ideas, but no motivation to work on them because again why should I?
There is also the arbitrary Kudos to Hits shit people use to find fic. No babes USE TAGS USE THE NEW FEATURE, look for shit that you’ve never read before not just the same thing everyone else has read. I don’t want to be fandom famous, I would just like to be MILDLY recognized for something I did.

I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?

Please back up your conversations, your stories. I have a backup of everything I care about that runs once a week, with full attachment backups every several months. I write stories on discord, and would be devastated if someone happened to them. You have to have your own local copies of every file you care about.
Especially with all of the age verification bs rolling out right now, I feel like this is still relevant even more. If you decided to or couldn't use discord tomorrow, who and what would you lose access to?
