Failure's not fun. Even tiny failures. The ones we experience each day. They're not always bad, but they're never fun. It's not like, "Yay, I failed so friggin fast and there's so much opportunity for growth oozing from my pores." It's more like, "Alright, that sucked." Yeah, that really blew. Pointing fingers. Blame games. Embarrassment. Ego. Then, perhaps, finally... From tiny failures come tidbits of wisdom. I generated valuable information. Something. Anything. Learning from failure. It's like I die. Then comes the postmortem. The obligatory embracing failure’s lessons. Identifying and correcting small failures. Tough tolerance. Ruthless compassion. Serious self-acceptance. Conveying bad news to myself with love. Digging in and discovering the wisdom contained in it. Failure is not optional to me; it’s part of being at the leading edge of self-discovery. It's a necessary by-product of caring for yourself. Some days work better than others. Some don't work much at all. It takes courage to confront the imperfections of yesterday. What didn't work? It takes even more courage to confront my own imperfections. Like one imperfection that I'm thinking of right now. What's not working? I'm impatient. I'm working on it. It's crucial. It's not optional. . . . #failure #wisdom #personaldevelopment (at Giving Up Is Not An Option) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3LLAHfJP2T/?igshid=g2rbwgy7hl2o
I was shaking in my boots. Fear. False evidence appearing real. I was up next. I glanced at my Mom. Ready? She said, "Let's kick Simon's ass." "That’s unlikely. If we're lucky, we'll make it through to the end." I thought we could. But just for a second or two. Then reality quickly set in. I truly faced their judgment. But it didn't define me. Only I can define myself. My mom let 'em have it. Judges Schmudges. They don't matter. We had fun. We'll never forget it. Neither will YouTube. My mom has always been there for me. One thousand and one percent. My mom has a say. My family, my friends, and my patients have a say. They're looking at me. They're listening to me. We're really communicating. My mom taught me that connection is the best medicine. Because once we’re truly connected, nothing else matters. Thanks, Mom. I was choking from the lack of conversation. I had to get some fresh air. The meeting was killing me softly. I looked around and saw the black asphalt of the parking lot. Heat lines were rising off it. But there was a tree. In the distance, it swayed in the breeze. One lone majestic pine. Just as isolated as I felt. A single Torrey Pine which saved my morning. Brought me back to life. The air in the meeting was stale. Now I could breathe in the moments. The parking lot was a desert of black tar. Now it was an oasis. Both of us spoke. I went first. Thanks for being born and growing there, Torrey Pine. Thanks for not forgetting, Steven. . . . . . #forgetting #notforgetting #torreypine #instatree #torreypines (at One Tree) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3EVOBdpkJj/?igshid=dc6jlisu9t3q
There’s a ribbon for everyone. For everyone with a disease. Almost. What if your health issue has no ribbon? Then what? What if there was a new movement to bring awareness to every single human being in the world who is suffering? Every human being in pain. Like right now. Too many of my patients feel ignored by the disease-specific special months and weeks that exist. There are so many different types of maladies that have no special month, week, day, ribbon, or movement. And I’m grateful for all the current campaigns. They’re needed and awesome. We just need something fresh for EVERYONE — EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING WITH ANY TYPE OF DISEASE. I’m an oncologist and the thing is, cancer sucks. All of it. Doesn’t matter what stage or what type. IT. ALL. SUCKS. And people have the right to say that it does. That’s what this new movement is all about. It’s saying, “It’s OK to have a really bad day in dealing with this. I’m human and guess what — it’s perfectly normal to feel this way.” When one can embrace the worst day with a disease — any disease — then just perhaps something new can open up on the other side of it. Letting it go for a moment, a few minutes, or an hour. I see a lot of patients with stage four cancer every day. They teach me how to live. And then they teach me again. And again. To rally through. To let go. To be okay with having a bad day. It’s OK to say “We love you, no matter what — every day”. In fact, we should have this movement all year. Every single day. Everyone who’s sick matters every single day. Period. So any day of the year can fit in the below for anyone: Just Don’t Shave January Forget Shaving February Must Not Shave March Almost Never Shave April Might Never Shave May Joke Shave June Just Can’t Shave July Augmented No Shave August So Not Shaving September Oh No Shave October Never Shave November Don’t Shave December Why? Because every last one matters. Why? Because we said so. . . . #doctorsofinstagram #compassion (at Ribbons) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsSALaoFNzR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tllsuiebs50z
Ah, forgiveness. So underestimated. So powerful. There are always new opportunities to forgive. But why would you ever let go of grudges? I’ll give you a little clue: Because bitterness and resentment are not good for you. It takes some soul-searching work though, like anything really good for you. You must reflect and be willing to pull back the curtain. To look at your life with eyes of positivity and a heart filled with generosity. Okay, here’s the great stuff forgiveness does for you: Reduce stress superbly Lower anxiety levels lusciously Halt hostility hugely Reduce blood pressure peacefully Lower heart rate lovingly Improve relationships revolutionarily Lower substance abuse risk rationally Decrease depression daringly Cut chronic pain purely Skyrocket spiritual well-being Soar psychological state Not bad. Forgive. Microstep: Find one person you can forgive today. Big or small deal. No matter. Forgive with no strings attached and you’ll feel better than you did yesterday (when you were still holding on to it). . . . #forgiveness #forgive #forgiveyourself (at Forgive Everyone Co.) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsR7-R3F6w8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1vomjjitcafwe
Your health is your health. Your health is not good or bad. It's just your health. Your health at this moment. You can have a say about certain aspects of your health. It's your responsibility to right the ship. What you eat. How you exercise. That's how we take responsibility for our health. It's about what we do. Day in and day out. It's also about the health messaging that’s done to us. Day in and day out. Don't believe the hype. Just start doing the next right thing. Make a tiny healthier choose right now. It's staring you in the face. It's not about knowing what to do. It's about doing the next right thing. And then the next. We have a chance to feel better. By doing better things. Better actions will change your health for the better. So do better things. You better.
