Just finished Broken Homes (Rivers of London #4) and I think one of the things that sticks with me, is that I think if Lesley hadn’t been a double agent and if she had been the one to find the bombs, she would have called it in and exited the building.

Over and over again we see Lesley put up as the more cautious, more reasonable person who can be trusted to know when to hold back. And this is narratively placed as a good thing, because the Faceless Man is running around but one of Peter’s best traits is how desperately he wants to save people.

(Side note I think there’s something very interesting that Peter is placed in two situations of lethal danger within what? 24 hours? And the first time he can’t get himself to move and he hates himself for it, and the second time he walks farther into danger to help other people get out. Maybe it’s the fact that the danger isn’t as real as a gun to his head, maybe it’s because of the earlier experience, but maybe it’s because he knows that if he doesn’t move it won’t be him that dies but other people.)

I don’t know how much Lesley knew about the bombs, but I’m inclined to think she did since seeing your prospective new boss blow up a building might give you second thoughts. Plus, looking back her insistence that Zach leaves could be her making sure the one person she cares about is shuffled neatly out of the was of any collapsing skyscrapers. But also, again, even if she hadn’t known I think Lesley is someone who prioritizes herself first (see: betrayal) and in this book we really see her view on harming other people. (See: her opinion that people with heart conditions or epilepsy or who don’t want to get electrocuted shouldn’t put themselves in a position to get electrocuted in the first place aka commit crimes). I could easily see her writing it off as her orders are to leave the building herself, it’s not her responsibility to evacuate people, and also look how many petty criminals are inside it.

I think that attitude towards power/harm also contributes to her flip. She’s been brutally hurt by magic once already and she had no ability to defend herself against it. I think she sees how slow her and Peter are progressing and how strong the Faceless Man is, and is jumping towards the place where she will again be in a place of power.

has anyone else been thinkin a lottt lately about how using gen ai is perhaps the most striking one-to-one to “cheating” in the scholomance magic system? Like you are literally using malia every time you fire up that fuckin gpt engine or image generator or whatever. You can’t just get something from nothing. You can’t poof an entire image equivalent to hours and hours of someone’s work without killing part of the world. SO many people seem to fundamentally not get this. Maia and Csethiro Goblinemperor are kinda the funniest pairing in the world... pious non-confrontational man who accidentally became emperor and would LOVE to just go and be a monk or something, put in an arranged marriage with an academic-jock swordswoman whose life dream is to get to say really loudly WHAT SIR, DO YOU QUARRELL?? I DEMAND SATISFACTION and then fight a duel about it. Initially she was pissed about the arranged marriage but now she keeps offering to kill people for him. Like when cats bring you things they hunted. It's like. Maia, thinking tentatively it would be nice to have a wife who doesn't hate him, while Csethiro is in the background overflowing a teacup because she got distracted by the third narrative arc of her maladaptive daydream where she's Lancelot and Maia's Guinevere. Maia probably gets jumpscared awake in the middle of the night w her face like an inch from his and before he can panic she's like 'on a scale of one to ten how impressed wouldst thou be if I crossed a bridge made out of swords to rescue thee and there were also lions at the end' and Maia is like '????? ten?? is that a thing that happens????'

This is a complaint coming from someone who remembers the old age of 'lemon' used for spicy content in fanfiction but I really miss when anime was guarantee to be categorized with the same link as its manga

Like my fairy tail nostalgia fanfic still is under the fandom tag on AO3 "Fairy Tail" but Gachiakuta is "Gachiakuta (Manga)" and "Gachiakuta (Anime)"

if I am fully caught up on the story (and honestly even when I am not), I want to be able to draw on the full breath of fandom experiences. Unlike book adaptations, Manga -> Anime rarely has substational story changes that would necessitate the separation (usually limited to filler eps or the anime out paced the source)

I want a way to safely sift out the crossovers without losing half the works that put both the manga and anime tags

Her regimate and upbringing ABSOLUTELY make sense for who she is now (the dedication to even some of the gods worst sins, all of Zeus and Hera being the good guys, the singular reliance on the child soldier if to be read in an unfavorable light) She is trying to do good person if lacking some nuance but that is from a "mortal's" lens.

The parrallel between her and Zagreus is perfect

One of her biggest blind spots so far has been the hight favorability and sympathy towards the gods, and her 'family.' Individuals she hadn't really known. Always cutting them favors in the face of their victims from before Chronos stole the throne.

(Chronos ate his children in the mythos and i don't think that is mentioned. irrelevant to this opinion but still)

I grew up in Canada, and when it was -25 C or below, they wouldn’t let us go outside for recess at school.

Like, everyone had boots and ski mittens and snowpants and winter coats, but still - indoor recess on those days. Cause the risk of frostbite was bad enough to justify everyone spending their lunch break supervising a classroom full of rowdy children.

That kind of cold is viscerally hostile to the human body. Your instincts will scream at you to GO INSIDE. It’s an environment that’s fundamentally physiologically unsafe, and you can feel that.

It’s so interesting to theorize what’s going on in Frank’s and Santos’ heads in relation to each other. They are clearly side stepping around their much needed conversation. Santos because she probably expects a confrontation, a fight, for him to blow up on her. And Frank, if I had to guess, because he is feeling conflicted over his resentment of her part in his life turning upside down and his need to apologize and thank her for quite possibly saving his life and his career.

Now, dealing with addiction is hard, getting away with something for so long and then getting caught is hard, taking accountability is hard, but Frank was never going to stop on his own. He was going to run his whole life to the ground and he was going to lose everything eventually. And part of recovery, rehab and the process is to recognize that.

When Santos arrives, he is in the thick of it and he is losing it, even if he doesn’t realize it at the time. Aside from that, he is the golden kid, right? He can do no harm. He is arrogant and used to going unquestioned. Then comes this newbie and she challenges him, she pushes and she sees him. All those dark parts he is trying to hide. How dare she?

So, he lashes out and he goes on the defensive. He’s angry, scared, arrogant and, at times, misogynistic. Everything is falling out of his control. But here’s the thing, even though he feels like he is loosing everything, I like to think he realized during the time away, he was definitely going to lose everything eventually anyway.

Not now though. Now, he has a chance. And, despite the mixed feelings he may still harbor against her, it’s all thanks to Santos.

How do you reconcile that the person who caused the last months of your life to be hell with the person that provided you with a second chance?

That’s why I think he has not tried to make amends with her yet, despite having done so with some people already and despite being very open about his journey.

And Santos, well. I don’t know. I do think she feels a little bad. Maybe a little guilty. But certainly not regretful. And she shouldn’t. Frank could’ve killed someone, he could’ve hurt someone and he was nothing but an ass to her. She doesn’t want more drama with him. She doesn’t know what his vibe is yet, so she’s staying clear.

They’ll have their moment soon, though, and I can’t wait to see it.

Like it's not just that it is clear he listened to her and retained knowledge from what was arguably one his worst days of his life. It's that he showed this extra bit of empathy and attention in a subtle way for her. Mel has never directly addressed any sort of diagnosis. All her knoweldge is because of her sister even if we and her coworkers can see the signs. Sometimes, the label of needs can be a burden and feel like being the weak link of continuous 'othering.'

He turned off the lights for her, closed the door, and only acted as if it's only a routine break for doctors being body slammed off a chair.
