The Marvel Juggernaut: With Great Power Comes Zero Responsibility by Megan White
I could not have articulated this but it is SO GOOD
This is such an insightful critique of how capitalism, in its relentless pursuit of limitless profit above all else, not only stifles creativity and cages artistic expression but also actively promotes regressive social values as a means of safeguarding the security of those obscene profit margins.
Global protests as Brazil’s Supreme Court set to begin landmark indigenous rights ruling
Indigenous peoples from all over Brazil are protesting in a week-long action in Brasilia against the “Marco Temporal” (or “Time Limit Trick”), draft bill 490 known as the “Bill of Death”, and a series of other genocidal plans and actions by the Bolsonaro government.
The “Struggle for Life” (“Luta pela Vida”) global action is led by APIB – the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil.
APIB have held a vigil outside the Supreme Court, which is due to restart voting on the Time Limit Trick, a proposal put forward by the agribusiness sector claiming that indigenous peoples only have the right to territory that they were physically occupying on October 5, 1988 – the day the current Constitution came into force.
A series of actions have taken place across the globe, including in San Francisco and London, by protestors calling for an end to the genocidal attacks being waged by President Bolsonaro and his supporters against Brazil’s indigenous peoples.

11.4.20. California
Uber and Lyft spent $205 million to buy a labor law to continue underpaying their workers. Prop 22, America’s most expensive ballot campaign, prevents Uber and Lyft workers from being reclassified as “employees” under a new California labor law. The law requires an unprecedented 7/8ths majority in the state legislature to alter, and it severely limits workers’ ability to organize and negotiate. For companies looking to maximize profit through lower labor costs, they may soon be able to reclassify employees as “independent contractors” (or gig work).
not even a week into 2021 and companies are moving towards gig workers who are more underpaid as the result of the bill Prop 22 that Uber and Lyft paid to make law
3 weeks into Prop22 and the ramifications are as bad as labor groups warned. Instacart is firing every worker who voted to unionize and is terminating an additional 2,000 jobs. This action was illegal less than a month ago.
AUGUST 21, 2021 UPDATE
A California judge ruled Friday that parts of Prop. 22 are unconstitutional, rendering the ballot measure unenforceable.
Prop 22 has been ruled unconstitutional by a California Superior Court judge.
Uber has vowed to appeal.
it occurs to me that the reason why people don’t venture outside YA or mainstream entertainment (e.g. marvel, disney, popular children’s tv, etc.) is bc beyond the media created primarily for mass consumption, it’s difficult for fans & audiences to break into and grow attached to narratives that resist commodification and superficial engagement. like the reason why people put fanfiction up on a pedestal and read only YA romance or fantasy and love the new loki show is bc they demand very little from you as a viewer / reader. they don’t ask for your participation in the creation of meaning within the story, they don’t require you to look deeper, probe further, in order to unlock inwoven layers of meaning & significance. they just give you characters you can divorce from the context of the narrative and fictional universe, tropes to latch onto and take out of context, imagery & iconography to replicate and reproduce so that you do their marketing for them, and commodified narratives and archetypes that say nothing and do nothing but make it easy for people to project their own fantasies and desires and expectations onto. that’s what it comes down to
so many westerners giving heartless, uninformed, and unsolicited opinions on afghanistan while ignoring the following:
the US government covertly provided schoolbooks for children that promoted militant and incorrect Islamic teachings and included images of weapons and soldiers in an effort to encourage a hatred of foreign invaders (i.e. the Soviets and evil communism) in children
“The school books, which were filled with talk of jihad and featured drawings of guns, bullets, soldiers and mines, have served since then as the Afghan school system's core curriculum. Even the Taliban used the American-produced books.”
excerpt from the book, titled “the alphabet of jihad” -> “All the Russians and infidels are our enemy. No one can invade our country. Only Muslim Afghans can rule over this country.”
the US financially supported the Taliban between 1994-1996 because Washington viewed the Taliban as anti-Iranian, anti-Shia and potentially pro-Western
Washington wanted Taliban support for the development of a US-based oil company Unocal - and so they stayed silent when the Taliban captured Herat in 1995, and expelled thousands of girls from schools (Rashid, 2000)
killed over 47,000 civilians
US forces massacred civilians deliberately on multiple occasions, such as the Kandahar massacre, where most of the victims were women and children civilians
routinely executed unarmed civilians by UK forces
targeting of hospitals in air strikes and bomb raids, such as this hospital in Kunduz
heavy usage of white phosphorus in civilian areas
killed afghan civilians ‘for sport’, multilated the bodies, posed with the bodies for pictures, and collected pieces for trophies
think before you speak.
Seriously, not that complicated
gentle reminder that south korea is occupied korea
US military bases are vectors of violence against the indigenous population as both infrastructure of occupation and a warehouse for violent men.
This is especially true in the case of sexual violence against women and LGBT people.
The US military has never been and will never be “diverse” and “inclusive” in any way shape or form.
All its bases need to be closed.
This is absolutely true. One of the things that kept coming up when I talked to LGBT+ people in Korea that did sex work or were simply cruising and got abused by the US troops stationed there, was that there was no recourse from the Korean police or the US military disciplinary arms. Further, Republic of Korea has a long history of leftist actions being put down by violent dictators that either got outright support or blessings from US military stationed in Korea (Gwangju Resistance is the biggest one). We cannot have justice, be it economic, gender, or LGBT+, with the US military stationed in Korea.
As a quick aside, this is also true for Japan.
we need the USA out of Northeast Asia, and we need it out now.
The “free world” is an American euphemism for the occupied and subjugated world the part of the world which is free for American tyrants for giant corporations the sole type of freedom the west actually cares about.
37 US military facilities in the Ryukyu Islands… more than ¼ of the US military facilities in Japan are located in Okinawa, despite the fact that 80% of the population of Okinawa don’t want these bases removed from the prefecture.
Daniel Richter - Das Auge War Kaputt (The Eye Was Broken) (2011)
i feel like people sometimes forget that literally a core tenet of capitalism is that there will always be a class that is forever trapped in poverty, always being exploited, always on the brink of starvation and homelessness. this isn’t a “problem” that has only cropped up recently. rather, it is how capitalism Works. you can’t have billionaires without also having poverty. poverty cannot be eliminated under capitalism.
Viva Fidel!!!!
