Since Sam lives in deep South in small town that has now become famous for the home of the first ever Black Captain America that gives the town a lot of wanted and unwanted attention. But Sam brushes off the unwanted racist attention but there one wanted attention that the Wilson family don't know about.
Every other week around 1am sometimes the Wilson family can hear an engine reviving up. Normally this doesn't disturb the sleeping Wilson well except for one newly found Wilson. Bucky Barnes.
He watches the big red truck with the confederation flag revive there engine in intimidation. But Bucky grips the gun in his hand he stares them down. He does this in secrete every night to protect his family to protect Sam.
He wants every unwanted attention to know the Wilson home is protected by the formally reformed Winter Soldier.
âThatâs Doctor Captain America to you,â Sam said smugly.
âThis is gonna be all you talk about for months, isnât it?â Bucky replied.
Sam hummed in agreement. Although, despite his self-congratulatory attitude, he looked a little emotional. He kept adjusting his ceremonial cap. Nervous maybe.
âI never went to college,â Bucky said, hoping a change of subject would put Sam at ease.
Sam was getting his honorary doctorate tonight, a gift from some university to thank him for his work as Captain America and the Falcon. Bucky had been teasing him about it because of course he had, but secretly he was proud of Sam. Secretly, he felt a lot of things about Sam.
âDid you want to?â
âWhat?â Bucky snapped out of staring at his partner.
âDid you want to go to college?â
âNot at all,â Bucky shrugged. âItâs different now. Back then, barely anyone had a degree. Now itâs like⊠I dunno.â
âLike a rite of passage?â
âYeah, pretty much.â
âYeah.â Sam looked thoughtful, nostalgic even. âIt was fun though. Iâm glad I went. Both times.â
âBoth times?â
âI have a Masters. In social work.â Sam said it casually. He glanced up at the stage nervously, awaiting his turn.
âYou have two degrees already?â
âYeah. Itâs no big deal,â Sam looked away again, shyness flashing over his face.Â
âThree degrees after today.â Bucky gaped at him. He knew Sam was smart. Smarter than Bucky. Too smart for his own good. But he was honestly shocked with how casual Sam was being about this. âDamn.â
âThis isn't even a real doctorate, technically. I didnât do the work for it.â
âWhat kind of-â Buck stopped himself. âNo. No, Iâm not letting you go there.â
âGo where?â Sam had turned to face him. He looked a mixture of genuinely modest and very confused. Honestly, it was unfair that someone could be so pretty and so smart at the same time.
âSam.â Bucky turned serious, placing his hand on Samâs shoulder. âYouâre a superhero. Youâre the bravest and the hottest guy I know and it turns out youâre a genius as well?â
âWh-â
Sam was interrupted by the announcer calling him to the stage to give his speech.
âGo. Go on!â Bucky ushered him away. âBe proud of yourself.â
âYou think Iâm hot?â Sam whispered back.
Bucky cringed internally. He hadnât meant to say that part out loud. Thankfully, he didnât have time to attempt to explain himself.Â
He watched Sam receive his sash and certificate, watched him give his speech, and watched him cry while giving his speech. He couldnât bring himself to feel embarrassed or exposed because, really, being in love with Sam Wilson wasnât anything to feel ashamed about. It was natural, obvious. He was so intelligent, so pretty and so damn brave. Hell, he probably wasnât the only person in the room looking on with heart eyes right now.
And afterwards, when Sam finished his speech and left the stage. When he sidled up to Bucky with a shy smile, Bucky felt like the luckiest man in the world.
âSo, whatâs all this about me being hot?â
Yeah, definitely too smart for his own good.
