No one is saying those relying on EBT shouldnt be allowed to enjoy their food. The issue is the *point* of EBT is to temporarily assist the struggling to get by until they can get back on their feet. It should be used for necessotoes and essentials. It should be used for making sure your family is properly fed while you or whoever gets back on their feet to fund their own lives again.
To spend this government aid on non-essentials like soda, cake, crab, lobster, and short ribs is a slap in the face to the tax payers. The average middle class family who pulls their weight in society cant even afford half of those things.
That money should be used for canned foods, boxed pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, baby food, etc. Things that can stretched, stockpiled, and effectively nourish the body in hard times. Again, the purpose of EBT is to temporarily aid those in hard times. To spend that money on lobster tail is a slap in the face to tax payers.
And that's not even getting into all of the tiktoks and confessionals of those using EBT admitting to abusing the system. Of those admitting they havent worked in over a decade and never had any intention of starting. Of those who admit to feeling entitled to free stuff, livong a better life than those actually contributing to society by working. Essentially abusing the system (often long term and sometimes even generational).
We as tax layers are allowed to have a problem with this. In the same way tax payers can be abgry that our taxes are used to buy weapons in wars that shouldnt concern us or how said taxes are used to pay politicians who intentionally stall out government proceedings while still getting paid. We get to say "HEY! My tax dollars are paying for THIS?!" and demand better.
