I find it kind of funny that Shane is labelled the "i can fix him" romance of sdv but...he really isn't. You, the player, actually do very little in terms of "fixing" him. You watch him have a few breakdowns, and you intervene when he's drunk on the cliffs, but...he's the one who decides to start going to therapy. He's the one who decides to quit drinking. These are not things that you ever encourage him to do. You can headcanon certain interactions all you want, but this isn't like "the player chooses the genre of Elliott's future book." You have no impact on whether or not Shane cleans up his life. You support him at a few key moments, but the desire to change and be better comes from Shane, not the player.

You don't fix him. He fixes himself.

I’ve also noticed that critics always assume that all Shane romancers are “fixer” types. It never seems to occur to them that romancers might see ourselves in Shane.

Even though tons of us admit just that, openly and often.

Sam’s family is poorer than a lot of people realize, I think. Dude has a military dad and a mom who doesn’t work. His house is full of small rooms and he happened to luck out and get the big one because he’s the oldest. The moment he got his own job he splurged and bought three entire instruments because he couldn’t wait and didn’t have any experience having his own income before, so obviously it’s a rough start as far as his bank account’s concerned. he wears kinda ragged hand-me-downs, which he does like, but maybe he started liking them because he had to when he was younger. In his winter outfit, he isn’t wearing a coat. He’s wearing two jackets layered on top of one another. Maybe he likes it. Maybe he has to.

Sebastian’s family is more well off than a lot of people realize. Dudes got a programmer job he can do from home. His mom’s a carpenter who built their own house from the ground up. His stepdads a scientist. His sister is a nurse. He wears nicer things. Has nicer hair. Owns a motorcycle. Wears a leather biker jacket. Can afford to go to zuzu city every once in a while.

This doesn’t have some kind of conclusion or anything it’s all just observations i’ve made and taken notes on, since i occasionally struggle with characterizing the two of them lol

Also to complete the trio : Abigail’s family is kinda in the middle. She doesn’t work and neither does her mom, but her dad owns one of two shops in the entire town and is constantly promoting his business. So maybe not as poor as sam, but she can still afford to get some of her own hobby-related stuff, even without a job. Still, most of the money they get from the store probably goes right back into managing it.

I also like to think a draw for Sam working to at Joja (despite that he clearly dislikes the job and they're a direct competitor of his best friend's family-owned business) is that he gets a (meagre, it's Joja) staff discount his mom can take advantage of.

Another headcanon of mine is his jacket was his dad's, and Vincent's clothing are also Sam hand-me-downs.
