It really is fascinating that basically every animal on earth that has some sort of skin integument enjoys a lil scratch. I mean it makes sense but like. Humans evolved from social grooming animals and we have perfect little grooming hands and basically everything on earth with scales, fur or feathers can basically be convinced to let us give them free back scratches. Humans don’t even get anything out of it other than the satisfaction of helping out. We’re just really good at it. What a useful creature to be put on a planet full of animals who can’t reach their backs.

This is a REALLY GOOD example of an alligator who’s happy with his situation. As I’ve talked about distressed alligator behavior before, it’s worth it to point out how you can tell that this fella is absolutely pleased as punch to be having his back scratched.

Vocalization: Alligators are one of the most vocal reptile species. The noise he’s making is not a warning or sign of irritation; that kind of rumble is something they do when they’re happy. (You’ll hear it during courtship a lot!)

Notice that he settles right down when she starts brushing. If alligators don’t like something, the first thing they try to do is leave. But he does the opposite- he settles down in the grass and for lack of a better word, melts. See how at how a couple of seconds in, his hind leg goes back? He tucks it back in when he hits the keeper’s foot, but what he’s doing there is the start of the oh-so-scientifically named “sleepy feets.” He’s not just being still- he’s relaxing.

Look at how he keeps his eyes open, even when she’s brushing up near his head! Closed eyes can be a mixed bag with reptiles. Sometimes it means sleepy contentment; other times it means they’re desperately trying to block out visual stimulus. This guy is so used to this and enjoying it so much that he’s keeping his eyes open- which also shows how much he trusts that human. He knows those bristles aren’t going anywhere near his eyes.

The best thing about having a partner who also does medieval reenactment is that you can text them like “do you want a sexy leg pic 😏” and when they obviously go “of course 👀” you send them a close up of a really nice piece of leg armour. And then they aren’t even mad and go “yeah that is sexy as hell, thank you.”

i got into art bc i thought my dad was an artist so i wanted to impress him but also i just thought art was fun and like all kids used crayons and stuff so i liked it i liked making things i saw in my head.

i mean, you do not know what to do as in to improve or as what to express? i think all artists want to express something. so, you should ask yourself what you think is special about you and the things in your brain that you'd want to bring to visual. could be just anything you like. if you like cats, draw cats. that's what i did and still do. i draw what i like.

if you find struggle in drawing the things you want to express, that is the teacher, the mentor itself named failure and it's pointing you towards specific learning. like, if it's hard to draw the cat's leg, then, study cat legs. hard to draw skyscrapers, study skyscrapers. if you struggle, you know where to go.

beginners, they struggle and want to quit, feel lost, when the answer is in front of them.

this is one of my first digital art works i made when i was 11. i drew this on the sony sketch app.

and at 13 i did this. it was my first drawing on a computer with a mouse.

i wanted to get better as quickly as possible so i tried and drew a lot. and anyone, if they care enough, can do so.

draw what you love. that's my biggest tip. know that you don't have to master everything. you don't have to be able to draw everything like you were born for it. you wouldn't expect shishkin to be able to make a league of legends splash art, would you? he was a master, but we all have our strengths an weaknesses. but, no doubt he could with enough familiarity.

don't let ugly work discourage you. you will have to make hundreds of ugly drawings like these before you start making consistent decent ones. have fun and experiment. i stress it. experiment a lot. i tried to do so a lot when i was new, lots of bad art on that phone haha. but every single one of them was like an addition to the progress meter. hundreds of my childhood work in a folder, and so many i remember thinking they were my magnum opus. because i tried. i spent a long time on them, even if they looked shit, and look like i could do them with my eyes closed now, it was the effort that got me to improve.

because literally, while i am painting, i arrive at specific parts and memories of drawing at 11,12,13,14, etc. specific materials or whatever, what i learned, still comes back to me. every drawing mattered, they all came together and still help me.

keep drawing. draw what you love. experiment. don't get discouraged. study light and form. there's no shortcut, we have to make ugly work and it's better to just embrace it than be scared to even start.

maybe it's harder to be in that ugly stage as an adult than a blissful 11 year old. or, maybe you are 11 too haha nah i don't think so but it's never too late to start for anyone. i still make a lot of ugly work lol you never stop making bad work it's just that the good ones are more common.
