children of any species are very good at being annoying and very cute while doing that
a sphinx child based on this post
The little kid sphinx is an adorable ball of badly thought out riddles!
I thought about just tagging this 'nuff said, but it's not.
I want to say something to all of the women under 50 on this site. Ready? You do not have to be over 50 to start taking up space.
Can I make that blink? Is that a thing Tumblr can do? Because, seriously. The sooner you believe you are allowed to take up space, the better life will be.
it's never too early to be the batshit crone you admire in others
i'm getting the sense some of you are not actually forklift certified.
well damn . egg on my face
THE PLOT THICKENS @averagejoey2000 explain yourself
I can't believe this is how I'm finding out that I got a scam forklift cert.
I took the cargo ops class at school but my teacher explained that it doesn't give a certification and I'd only be okay for ship's crane and the school forklifts. she said I could take an online exam and get my cert. I paid 60 bucks.
I'm googling and I'm seeing a lot of resources saying that the online programs cover the classroom part of the exam but not the in person practical aspect.
29 CFR 1910.178 (l)(2)(ii)
but I did the in person practical shit at school.
the back of the card even had fancy numbers on it. I couldn't have known that this isn't the one. this website sounded more official than certifyme.net, and there wasn't one with a .gov address.
so, I emailed OSHA, and they said that so long as I live and work in California, there's no such thing as forklift certification. I have to be told how to do it every time I get the job.
Update: I took a certification class in shipboard Material Handling Equipment at my federal job. *now* I'm forklift certified, but only on ships and piers and only for this company, but also rated to forklift explosives and hazardous materials. Also I'm a woman now.
May 31 2016 - Collin Kennedy, who is a cancer patient, used expanding spray foam to disable a parking meter at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg where he gets his treatment. He says the fees are a tax on the sick. [video]
yes!!!!!!!!
Lots of well-intentioned (I hope) but extremely condescending comments in the notes like “maybe don’t film yourself doing crime.” Respectfully… This man knew what he was doing. He didn’t just film himself, he invited media to film him. He did this to make his own statement, with his own voice, with his own face. He wanted himself and his actions to be visible.
Collin Kennedy died in 2018, just two years after this video was taken. What would anonymity have achieved for him in those last two years? Avoiding punishment? His whole point was that these parking fees are already a punishment on the sick.
Is public protest dangerous? Sure. Is it more dangerous than merely existing as a sick or disabled person navigating a hostile healthcare system? I think that is for every individual experiencing it to decide for themselves.
A Winnipeg man who filled a city parking meter with spray foam to protest the high cost of parking for sick people around hospitals has died
Collin Kennedy, 50, lived with multiple myeloma — a type of blood cancer — for 19 years.
He invited media to watch him fill a parking meter with spray foam to raise awareness about the high costs of parking for cancer patients and other sick people getting treatment. Video of Kennedy vandalizing the meter was widely shared on social media. It led to a Canada-wide petition to end the practice of charging for parking near hospitals.
He was a man who fought the only way he knew how, even if that meant taking matters into his own hands and disabling parking meters. He wasn’t in the boardrooms or corridors of power, he was on the streets trying to make a difference. (CBC News, December 12, 2018)

Thank goodness that justice is being served, and the companies that stole from every American family to the tune of tens or hundreds of dollars are being forced to pay less than one cent per person they affected!

Two-Spirit
Two-Spirit is a term created by Indigenous peoples of North America in 1990 to bring together the diverse gender identities and sexualities that exist within their cultures.
It is not a single gender. Each nation has its own traditions, names, and ways of understanding these experiences.
For many communities, Two-Spirit people held important social, cultural, and spiritual roles before European colonization.
The term should not be used by non-Indigenous people, as it is specifically connected to the cultures and experiences of the Indigenous peoples of North America.
Irawhiti (Māori)
Irawhiti is a Māori-language term used by some people to describe transgender or gender-diverse experiences.
The term is part of the contemporary revitalization of Māori language and culture, allowing Indigenous people to describe their identities through their own cultural frameworks.
Although it may be translated as "transgender" in some contexts, Irawhiti carries meanings connected to Māori cultural realities and should not be understood simply as a copy of Western gender categories. ( Flag design by Irauí on Tumblr. ) @irawhiti
takatāpui (Māori)
Takatāpui is a Māori term used by Indigenous LGBTQIA+ people in New Zealand.
Historically, the word referred to an intimate relationship between people of the same sex.
Today, many Māori people use the term to express both their Indigenous identity and their gender or sexual diversity.
More than a specific sexual orientation or gender identity, Takatāpui connects a person to their culture, ancestry, and community.
The term is part of the Māori cultural revitalization movement and demonstrates that gender and sexual diversity can be understood through Indigenous perspectives, not only through Western categories. ( Flag design by Irauí on Tumblr. ) @irawhiti
Māhū (Kanaka Maōli)
Māhū is a traditional Hawaiian cultural identity associated with people who embody both masculine and feminine qualities.
Historically, māhū people held important roles as educators, keepers of knowledge, healers, and transmitters of cultural traditions.
The arrival of colonization and Christian missions attempted to erase these identities, but many Native Hawaiians continue to preserve and revitalize the māhū identity today.
Māhū is not simply the Hawaiian equivalent of "transgender" or "nonbinary." It is a distinct cultural identity deeply connected to Hawaiian history, culture, and spirituality.
Tibira/ Tybyra
Tibira is a historical figure documented during the colonial period.
According to interpretations by Indigenous researchers and collectives, Tibira may be understood as a man who had relationships with other men, or as a person who lived with a feminine gender identity or expression, challenging the norms imposed by colonizers.
Their story is remembered as an example that gender and sexual diversity already existed among Indigenous peoples long before colonization. ( Made by me )
Çacoaimbeguira
Accounts of the Tupinambá people mention the çacoaimbeguiras.
According to interpretations by Indigenous researchers and collectives, they may be understood as women who had relationships with other women, or as people who lived with a masculine gender identity or expression outside the norms imposed by colonization.
Their existence shows that diverse ways of experiencing gender and sexuality were already part of Indigenous societies long before the imposition of European models. ( Made by me )
So while Project Hail Mary was super secret the secrecy only could possibly last until they started assembling her in orbit next to ISS. Especially the movie! Mary which is gigantic compared to the book one. Probably roughly ISS size sans solar panels? idk
Anyway with that the jig would be up because the whole thing would be visible from the earth surface. Not super easy because it's moving fast but doable.
So knowing that they would have to inform the people in advance. and they clearly did because we can see some cameras and world flags in the room they ask Grace to go. Regular press conferences or most likely just official statements were probably quite frequent by the end.
but just informing the public about the wild and very pricey shit they are about to pull is a baaaaad idea without explaining why and how it will totally work in detail
luckily they have a professional science educator on site ;)
except sticking Grace in a very official role in front of cameras is baaaaad idea. dude is charming and good at his work but also probably would
a freak out at the official ness of the role
the PR department would not be happy
he is busy with so many other thigs
the PR department would NOT be happy
not sure if he remembers just which level of top secretness what parts of the project actually are
the PR department would be on fire
so the solution was to send documents to proffesional-proffesional science educators that are proffesional at being in front of camera
but also ask Grace to record some quick videos explaining everything, giving some ideas etc because it's easier to digest for proffesional-proffesional science educators than heavily redacted files and it's also easier to redact
so what I'm trying to say here is that there is a series of educational video sketches that Grace recorded late nights within like a week where he definiatey
used handmade sock puppets
declared he wants to be muppet fox
generalny explains everything assuming it will be a puppet show or animation makeig his own props from scraps
used Stratt's "What is Project Hail Mary" PowerPoint while badly acting her no-nonsense approach
at least 1/3 of the unedited videos is him falling asleep in front of his laptop camera
pulled so much mad-scirntist-that-havent-slept-in-48-hours rizz
Most of the videos would be released to public after launch as PR campaign. Because they had whole PR campaign on the astronauts and the backups.
And those silly videos were the only way Stratt could trick Grace into doing his own promo materials without him realizing. The same way she did with his astronaut training.
Hey op what the FUCK are these tags-
look me in the eye and tell me Grace isn't the nicest and sweetest and most helpful little sacrificial lamb to ever sacrifice
mostly by the power of Grace's own denial xD
ok sorry you summoned the babble now but seriously I've read the book after seeing the movie and while in the movie you can get a bit of the impression Grace is just some guy that got there by poor chance of bad luck of eh will do without training
but the book. oh the book has a space and subtlety of a steel pipe to the face to show in detail that had he ever volunteered he would be 1 choice from the get go. it kinda reads like a horror story in a way with the noose getting slowly tighter around his neck while he is all happy to help all these wonderful smarter people solve the proplems
like one of those characters you want to grab by the shoulders and shake like stop being even more useful and perfect for the role
and the astronaut training I meant there is the pool thing. movie!Grace is adamant he haven't even done it while book! Grace had a sudden paragraph apropos of nothing of not only doing the pool thing
that denial master was stoked he was doing the pool thing in an actual NASA pool with the 1:1 scale ISS behind him where actual real astronauts trained
(you are actually just now learning how to be actual real astronaut you dumbass!)
but that's not all. oh no. in that scene he is testing and perfecting the equipment so later he can teach Dubois and Shapiro how to use it
oh yeah master that shit and be the #1 expert in another thing. sure. +1 to actual invaluableness. sure that won't come back and bite you in the ass
so yeah. I've got feels about this scene
and also this scene goes fluently to Dubois and Shapiro failing at inviting him to threesome
and I was like uhuh. everybody is right. that man is so aroace. and I have a lot of feels about that also
We Need To Stop With The "Women Didn't Work" Myth
Yeah, I’d watch Muppets Lord of the Rings
"He should have stopped when he was still AHEAD!"
Absolutely brilliant. No notes.
OK but Statler and Waldorf need to have climbed the tower of the Eye of Sauron and be watching the whole movie from there.
With ear trumpets and opera binoculars on a stick to explain how they can hear and see every bit of dialogue and bit of action.
Sauron himself needs to be ignorant of their presence immediately below him, and they need to call attention regularly to everything the character that's a literal giant eye doesn't notice.
Once the Ring is destroyed and the tower is fallen they need to be clambering out of the rubble and:
"Looks like the Eye of Sauron is closed."
"Looks like the Eye of Sauron was closed for the whole movie!"
And they both laugh.
