there's nothing sexgender-subversive about a character that looks like a man and acts like a man and has the narrative role of a man saying “i'm not a boy, i'm a cowboy”. it's just whatever wordplay.
there must've been *something* that led dess to become the knight instead of just saving up to disappear from her boring town and family and start over a totally new life the moment she hit 18. it couldn't have just been poor planning skills. she *seemed* goal-oriented, with all the survivalist supplies and stuff. that's why i keep coming back to mental illness. some condition that the adults didn't *cause*, but they accidentally made it worse. in undertale, it wasn't any character's fault that chara hated humanity, but deltarune seems more focused on the circumstances that create “a chara” (dess, kris, susie before her turn). idk. idk.

so the person who gives you the way to get into the Forgotten Man's room in Chapter 3 seems to suggest "Nowhere" is, just that. forgotten.
Kris might be trying to (or at least think they're heading towards) the same fate as the Forgotten Man.
they might think that as things are right now (Toriel has Sans, Susie has Noelle) everyone in their life would be happier if they didn't know they ever existed; after all, they wouldn't know there was anyone to miss.

If Kris dies, the people that loved them will miss them. even if they just disappear, those people will look for them, the self-blame will get passed around... If they get Forgotten, those people will continue on without having to worry about them at all.

a dark world in the holiday house would be SO interesting. in a world where objects crave to serve their purpose in order to feel fulfilled, imagine how the objects feel in the house of a woman who refuses to use anything for the sake of preservation. they must all be desperately waiting for whatever moment she's been saving them for, desperate for even a drop of her love. it'll happen any moment now.
maybe they'll declare that rudy is dying so they'll move him from the hospital to the house to die in his bed and that's when noelle opens the fountain

now that i've had time to sit on it and cool off, my thoughts on flowery can be summed up in this: he shouldn't have been a man. every narrative goal that toby fox tried to meet by making him a man could've been met without making him a man, and some narrative goals are actively weakened by the decision to make him a he/him tumblr-sexyman-styled man. i attribute that decision to a lack of boldness & imagination, i'm disappointed by it, he comes off to me as reheated tenna because of it, and i wish he was genderfuck instead.
why would susie tear up a place where she's only been welcomed and shown care? that's not her character. she's unkempt bc she's poor & neglected. she's destructive when she's rejected. otherwise, there's no evidence of her being uncaring or destructive with things in the light world, where they can't be cleaned & fixed with magic, unless you count her being marginally messy with the church fruit juice (i don't see napkins) and doodling harmlessly in the various festival paper forms. *she* cleans up a stain in this very room that kris & toriel had left there for god knows how long. and she eats food *off* of the ground; she doesn't leave it *on* the ground. this is a poor interpretation of susie.

another thing i tend to think about with this. i also just think in chapter 5 there's a theme of care and dependency. the flowers have extreme guilt over being taken care of by asgore. flowery conceptualizes himself as weak and useless. in the dark world, his fantasy, he tries to return the care given to him to asgore to "make up for" asgore taking care of him when he should've died decades ago. it's an extreme example, but i also resonate with his feeling.
when your body or mind puts you in a situation where your reliance on other people becomes really explicit, you're trained by the world to see that as shameful or to see yourself as deficient. your efforts to ignore your needs just to avoid "being a burden," will leave you worse off. you punish yourself because of deeply internalized ableism.
regardless, even by virtue of being a living thing on this planet, you are already designed to need others. you have to listen to your body's needs even against a society that teaches you you shouldn't. you have to be okay with the fact that you have needs. sometimes your needs are different or are greater than the person next to you, and all you can do is listen to your body and turn to others when you need them. you're still a person when you need people.

it's interesting to me how much he uses the language of deltarune to express this feeling. your hopes and dreams slipping away, and bitterness growing is literally the explanation we get for shadow crystals (and so wept the fallen star, making rivers with its tears. then, slowly, from the bitter water, something grew. it looked like glass). this is also the crushing feeling when you lose a sense of control when you're in pain, when you can't do things the way you want, the way you used to. but when you find yourself still able to fly, you do so because you've adapted. you've listened to your body. you've learned that listening to your body means changing the pace, letting yourself be cared for, letting yourself be helped.
as far as toby's said it, having to expand his team has made deltarune a better game. chapter 5 is so expansive because so many people helped to make it. Pink's fight has sprite work from guest artists, music with Camellia, bullets programmed by Toby's team. She is, to me, a love letter to Deltarune's development process as a whole and how it has shaped Toby, and a reflection of the kinds of thoughts Toby has shared with us about developing Deltarune alongside pain. I also think it's a beautiful follow-up to Gerson's themes of storytelling and authorship (letting go of "perfection" + accepting the contributions of others = both about rescinding control and embracing perseverance). Pink is also so much more than this, but I've been thinking about this a lot.
