Refusing to Romanticize Academia

My sensitive soul recently decided to return to Substack and pour out my heart (and thoughts) on the emotional costs of academia because they’re not always talked about! We focus so much on the mental and financial costs of academia when, sometimes, all we have guiding us is a feeling: passion. But what happens when that feeling is corrupted by the material context of the world? What happens when passion is not enough?

i am all for being critical of academia as an institution but many scholars are actually doing incredibly important work and their expertise is extremely valuable and not like anything you will find from some rando on tumblr dot com. you guys.

It's absolutely crazy that intellectual labor can wipe you out. It seems like it shouldn't be a thing, like your stores of brain juice shouldn't be able to be depleted in that way.

I feel like a wizard that's out of spell slots, and to me that's a hackish mechanical limitation put in place to try to balance the classes.
