My grandfather smoked in his house decades ago. We moved in. We started working on it. After just one day of having the AC off so it could be worked on, I could no longer stay in the house because the smell was coming out of the walls <I>so strongly</I> and triggering my asthma to the point where I couldn’t breathe. My grandfather is dead and his smoking still managed to effect me that negativity. It is not just their body.

My aunt took up smoking in secret as a coping method for her depression. My cousin found out and she was so scared for her mom’s health that she hid the cigarettes. But when my aunt noticed they were missing, do you think she had a calm conversation about the whole thing with my cousin? Nope. She stormed into her room in such a rage, my cousin was too scared to even argue. She just gave the cigarettes back and prayed for her mom to leave the room. There was no explanation for why she took up smoking, for why she was trying to hide it, no reassurance for her worried daughter, not even a question as to why my cousin took them… there was just addiction-fueled anger. Directed at a child who had no control over her environment.

And then there’s my own mother, who has never taken up smoking, but who grew up with two chain-smoking parents. My mom who has permanent lung and throat damage from a lifetime of breathing in smoke that she didn’t ask for. My mom who now takes daily medication so her throat doesn’t ache.

But, tell me again how smoking only affects your body?

I grew up breathing not only my step-dad’s cigarette smoke, but all his friends as they’d frequently hang out in the living room together creating a cloud of smoke that permeated the whole house. I got asthma at 10. I found a growth in my left lung at 30. I now have 1 lung. 1 lung and I’m still asthmatic. Fuck people who smoke around children.

Every time people light up on the side walk, or bus stop, or train station, I have to move to ensure I don’t die. Every time I go to work, I literally have to fear for my life at this point, because there are so many smokers on my commute that could kill me if my inhaler doesn’t work.

You have the right to smoke if that’s what you want to do to your body. You don’t have the right to make ME breathe your smoke though, and that’s what happens when you smoke in public. Anywhere. At all. You can kill and cause harm to other people. It isn’t just your body affected with smoking, it’s every single person standing near you. It is every person who has to walk past you that you affect. And if they’re asthmatic you can kill them. You are not playing with only your life, you’re playing with mine too, and I didn’t consent to it, so how fucking dare you tell people to grow up when you’re arguing that you should be allowed to play with other peoples lives.

My mum died at the age of 55 partly because she was a heavy smoker for most of her life. She had quit for a few years but she eventually returned to the habit. I had to watch her health slowly decline over years because she kept smoking and didn’t exercise enough. And if she wasn’t so hooked on the habit I might have gotten several years more with her.

So fuck you for saying that someone sounds boring for wanting to stop the glorification of smoking.

I had the displeasure to watch my mother slowly die from mouth cancer stemming from heavy cigarette use for several years. I saw a very strong woman, whose life motto was "take no shit from anyone", wither away not only in front of her husband and my siblings, but her mother as well. She passed away in 2015, she stopped smoking in 2013, and my family is still trying to wash and re-paint our walls from nicotine staining and it is a horrible reminder of what happened to her. Tobacco should be taxed higher, and promote the dangers of ANY tobacco products. I'm both sorry and disgusted that you find my mom's death boring.
