At the store I was covering today a dad walked in with his kid. They were on the teen side of childhood but age was indeterminate to me. He said, “So they need a new bed.” Later he added, “Their current bed is pretty squishy.”

I glanced at the child and said, “Would I be correct in intuiting your pronouns are they/them?”

Both dad and child lit up and he thanked me for noticing.

“It’s no big deal. My wife uses they/them. It confuses people because they hear wife and assume she/her but they’re a they/them. It just sounds so much better than spouse or partner to say my wife.”

The kid was ecstatic and exclaimed, “Yeah cause that’s your wife!”

It was fully heart meltingly adorable.

I am the they/them wife in question. I think I get to choose what terms I am ok with my wife using. Wife is great. It's immediately gay. We love to hear it. Spouse or partner is ok, but doesn't have the same pizazz as wife because, once again, wife makes it immediately and definitively gay. (Definitely use spouse at work when I don't feel like outing myself.)

The idea that human trafficking laws and their enforcement will protect young people is based on a deadly misunderstanding about the function of the state. The police can and do use human trafficking laws to criminalize youth, especially poor and racialized youth. A human trafficking framework provides the police with even more power over the lives of young people than it does over adults. In 2015 and 2016, a young woman in the Oakland area reported that up to 29 police officers from seven different police departments had had sex with her in exchange for protection, money, drugs, and information about raids and investigations, many of them while she was still a minor. This is not a bug in the system--it is by design. We need to listen to young people in the sex trade who tell us what they need. But this, too, has been criminalized under human trafficking legislation. In 2013, the only US group led by and for young people of color in the sex trade--Young Women's Empowerment Project (YWEP)--was forced to close because anti-trafficking legislation had criminalized some of the harm reduction services that YWEP had provided.

He submitted the proposal to the Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council and the plan was rejected because the proposed four-foot-high railings (fence) and simple cast iron gate (which was chosen purely privacy and security for the front of the home) were considered “too domestic” looking for the former industrial area. The council gave Sheeran a list of options for privacy “railings”, and after changing the proposal Sheeran was given permission that was more in line with the neighbourhood, which is in a conservation area. A direct quote from Sheeran states: “Dear Natalie Edwards from The Sun newspaper. Your story is bollocks, I have done lots of work in the past for Crisis and Shelter and would never build railings outside my home for that reason.The reason was to keep the paps that you employ from being on my doorstep. Have a good day.” this comment has been substantiated by the local police and security companies that Sheeran and his neighbours have had to contact previously when paparazzi have been taking photographs not only of Sheeran’s house but inside his windows, and constantly knocking on his door and yelling outside his house. Think about this for a moment, a guy bought a house and fixed it up, he was trying to gain some privacy by asking for a simple fence and gate to indicate the property line and gain some distance from the paps, - which the police and council said was fine - and the newspapers who can no longer use these ill-gotten photos and are probably pissed have managed to spin this story to make it seem that this guy (whether you like his music or not), is an asshole and is anti-homeless. And you’re all eating this shit up and believing the newspapers, even though the Sun and Telegraph are well known across the UK for making shit up and lying. smh.
