Landmark German ruling declares Google's AI Overviews are Google's own words and makes it liable for false answers

This is HUGE.

1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.

2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.

3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."

4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.

Point 2 deserves drilling down into because NOT ONLY was it dismissed, but Google stated in court that the outputs of its LLMs cannot be relied upon. The fact that the have admitted to this on record can now be used to sue them for customers who have been missold LLMs on false promises where something goes badly wrong.

Megan Thee Stallion dubbed this summer the “Hot Girl Summer” following the release of her record Fever, and she’s taking the label seriously. The “Realer” rapper took a pledge to stay environmentally conscious and use her platform to raise awareness of rising global temperatures and climate change. All this talk about how American imperialism pushes Black American culture worldwide, and that’s why y’all gotta be mad at the Black people specifically, at no point do y’all think, “we can just push for our own cultural identity’s form of entertainments?”

And I know for certain many have, it’s not impossible. But for the folks that want to blame Black Americans for being predominant in the music scene and thus shown on television and in radio of different countries…..just take that up with the people in charge over in your country? You can’t because of social barriers? Well I know that can’t be the case cuz Black people literally died just to make music and show our stories.
