My brother pointed out how committed Jack is to not having a power imbalance/conflict of interest regarding his feelings for Sam that even in a time loop where everything was going to reset anyway, he still resigned before he kissed her and I think that is hilarious and also awesome
I agree that it’s funny but also respectful. There’s a fic where Jack actually tries to kiss Sam in several time loops, and keeps getting slapped in response, until he works out that he might have more luck if he resigns first… Unfortunately I can’t remember the name or author!
I think Jack is very conscious that it has to be Sam’s decision to make any changes in their relationship, because she would be the one who is affected most by gossip/ damage to her reputation as an Air Force officer. And I think that’s part of the reason he steps back when Pete is on the scene, because he interprets that as Sam saying she doesn’t want to take that risk to be with him.
But it all works out after Season 8!
The fic that I was thinking of was Practice Makes Perfect by PepperF. An excellent fic!

I feel like collectively as a fandom we haven’t discussed the fact that in Window of Opportunity when Jack kisses Sam, the gate is obviously going crazy in the background, and Sam just doesn’t care. She’s too into the kiss to even notice.
Everyone else is the same, Hammond is like 😧 and people are just crowded round watching like ???
No one’s batting an eye at the gate because they are all simply too stunned at the kiss

I’m writing a tiny Sam/ Jack fic at the moment. It’s a tiny slice of life ficlet, and was inspired by a line from the new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie, of all things. I must emphasise that it’s really short and probably won’t get over 400 words.
I’m just really struggling with writing the last couple of sentences! I don’t want it to trail off as my other drafts have, I can just about see the shape of what I want to say, but I can’t get the words onto the page 😭
I’m still struggling with this ☹️ It is such a tiny fic - they have dealt with the (very minor) incident, and all that needs to happen in the last couple of sentences is that they go back to sleep. The End. That’s all!
Yet I cannot get the right words in the page 😭
I have finished and posted this tiny fic! Many thanks to @brigitoshaughnessy for the writing advice when I was stuck 😊

It depends on when I start reading it tbh
I'm currently reading an ongoing fic of over 200k but I started when it was way less, so it didn't look as intimidating to read.
For writing it... depends on my motivation.
I missed the poll, but it’s an interesting question! I’ve just sorted my bookmarked fic by word count, and the longest fics are around 100-120k words. These are fics that were WIPs when I started reading them, so like @janetfraiserspenlight says, they didn’t seem as daunting to read. I think that’s probably around my maximum length.
The longest fic I have bookmarked is 164k words, which is ‘The Love That Doesn’t Kill Us Makes Us Stronger’ by NiceHatGeorgia. This was complete when I read it, and it was much recommended and was one of the Sam/ Jack Fic Club fics. However, if I’d come across it as a finished fic without those recommendations, I would have been put off due to the length and the topic of the plot (it’s an AU).
I would have missed out - it’s a great story - but I have limited fic reading time, so a very long completed fic seems daunting in a way that a WIP wouldn’t be, even if the WIP states it’s going to be 40 or more chapters long.
Even though I could chose to read one chapter per day of a long completed fic rather than read it all at once, it seems like too much of a commitment unless I know that I love the author/ the fic was recommended/ the summary made me try the first chapter and I was hooked.
As for writing fic, around 1k has been my maximum so far. I’m always impressed by people who actually write longer fics!
You know, for once they deserved to have an actual nice trip to the forest.

I was scrolling down, saw the first image of Mitch Pileggi, and assumed he was in this role Assistant Director Skinner and speaking to Mulder and / or Scully. I always forget he was in Atlantis, as I haven’t watched much of it.

Sometimes the shenanigans that come up in an episode of Stargate make me wonder about SGC HR and payroll.
Like, okay, so in Holiday Machello body-swaps with Daniel and then goes out and buys lunch for a bunch of random people in a diner. With Daniel's credit card. Now, I mean, maybe you can just call up the credit card company and say, "I didn't authorize this purchase," but if it was a large purchase, and it seems it probably was, the diner will probably challenge the chargeback, and they almost certainly have Daniel on camera. So like, how is this handled? Does Daniel just have to eat the cost? Budgeting for his credit card bill while cursing Machello for stealing his body and $500 worth of milkshakes? Or does the SGC have like. Insurance. For that sort of thing. Given the nature of the Goa'uld it's not unreasonable. $10 per paycheck and if your body gets hijacked by some kind of alien malevolence and spends all your money the Air Force will just quietly settle the bill in the event you survive and get your body back.
In A Matter of Time most of the SGC experiences a single day, but outside, two weeks go by due to the time dilation effects of the black hole. Some scrooge in payroll is patting themselves on the back for months for managing to successfully argue that everyone inside the mountain should only be paid for the time they actually experienced working, instead of the full two weeks of real time that they were at work. They severely regret it when Window of Opportunity rolls around and Jack and Teal'c scrape together the evidence that they experienced work for 2,160 hours in a single day.
As a manager of large, global HR and payroll departments, I also pondered the question of how to pay Jack in A Matter of Time, where one work day took two weeks, and in Window of Opportunity where he worked for thousands of hours in a time loop.
An aside - I have no idea how payroll works in the US Air Force so I am going on what decisions I would make.
First off Jack is very likely salaried exempt (US payroll speak for not eligable for overtime) as he is in a leadership position and seemingly has no fixed hours.
I would have made the decision to pay Jack for two weeks salary during that one shift in Matter of Time, because first, he is salaried, and second, policies encourage behaviours, and we would want staff to volunteer for dangerous missions, such as staying in the mountain when there is a black hole, without being financially penalised for the whole time dilation thing.
Consistent with this, and being exempt, Jack wouldn't be eligible for overtime in Window of Opportunity. I was thinking of a one-off bonus for the extra work, but what about other people who, for example, get stuck off-world for longer than planned? They could also argue to be eligible for bonuses, and payroll costs could spiral. Maybe some long paid PTO.
But in general, their payroll would be a nightmare and God only knows what workers comp would look like, but I would still 100% take the job 😂
And on the Daniel question, given he is a government contractor, he would definitely be able to expense his credit card bill after Holiday.
If anyone does knows how payroll in the Air Force works, let me know, just because I am a nerd and would be interested.
Interesting stuff! I’d also love to know how all the ‘back office’ departments deal with the strange things that happen at the SGC. Could have been a fun ‘Lower Decks’ type episode where the finance team is trying to carry out the quarterly budget review, but keeps being inconvenienced by the latest ‘aliens trying to invade earth’ nonsense.
I feel so completely vindicated that other people are curious about the HR department of the SGC because my friends think I'm overcomplicating it when I ask these EXACT QUESTIONS.
I can only assume that all frontline base personnel would be on some kind of composite allowance that a numbers wonk somewhere worked out to account for possible off world or on-world irregularities in working hours (i.e stranded on another planet or stuck in a time loop). So like, everyone assigned to an SG team (or maybe you can argue the whole base) would get an extra 12% on their base wage regardless, instead of having to lodge individual overtime or irregular hour timesheets to get paid out. Which 90% of the time would mean you get over and above your base salary for just doing your job, but 10% of the time comes in REAL handy when someone uses an offworld gate to blow up a sun and you have to wait for a ride home.

Alas, perfect shows are often less fun to fan. It’s the batshittery that sucks us in. The more batshittery in the show, the more fun it is to tear apart and fic about and dissertate on.
Do you know how many stories there are on AO3 about The Americans, a perfect show? 230. There’s no need.
Do you know how many stories I alone wrote about Stargate, a franchise with batshittery in its bones? 85.
