!!SPOILERS ABOUT MAZE RUNNER!!
Ok so I need to get out with the fact that I watched Maze Runner and it deeply reminded me of TLOU and that also I need to yap about it virtually because in real life I know I’ll get told to shut up.
I first watched the Maze Runner a few weeks ago and I still remember how I genuinely thought of it as TLOU.
Not just because of the scenery of, specifically The Glade but also because Thomas reminded me A LOT of Ellie.
Other than the fact that they're both the cure, also the way Thomas was willing to sacrifice himself for everyone (ok, mostly for Newt but that's a different topic). Just as Ellie was willing to sacrifice herself for everyone even though Joel stopped her.
And no, Thomas did not have his own "Joel" but he did have his own companions who were like family to him from The Glade.
If we look at it, in a way Alby was Joel, for a much shorter time. BUT NO HEAR ME OUT!
Alby taught Thomas the ways of The Glade, so he was his guide through The Glade just as Joel was Ellie's guide through the apocalyptic world. Even though Alby wasn't Thomas's guide for a long time and later Thomas took the reins, I still see Alby looking at Thomas a sort of "son" in a way. That's not what I really mean, but family but in a closer way. It's hard to explain.
Also, lowkey always hated Teresa, just thought I would say that.
I also remember that specifically after writing this move I started writing a list of reasons as to why The Maze Runner trilogy reminded me of TLOU.
Also some of my facts might be incorrect because it's been a while since l've watched the movies so please correct me!!
At first, I honestly didn’t really ship them. I thought they were overhyped because I first saw this mentioned in an internet comment section.
Their dynamic was very friends to lovers (but can’t be lovers because Thomas is fated to end up with Teresa who then dies but then Newt also dies so yaoi doesn’t even get a chance to say “hi, hey, hello”) coded.
I rewatched the film and noticed that there WERE signs. Small, insignificant but there.
When Newt FIRST sees Thomas in The Glade he isn’t really judging him like everyone else. He observes him and his eyes are kinda curious. Unlike everyone else who’s just judging Thomas’s running and falling at the start. LIKE SHUT UP HE WAS IN PANIC AND LOST HIS MEMORIES.
The way Newt looked at Thomas when he said he’s going in the maze which looked like this “please be careful sweetheart, angel, baby” kind of expression. Because OH he was worried. Don’t tell me otherwise.
ALSO the way Newt opened up to Thomas way more quickly than to anyone else will always be dear to me. He knew Thomas wouldn’t judge him and that could just be a sign of “deep trust between two mates” I KNOW. But I refuse.
Also when he calls him Tommy. Also when he’s gonna turn and tells TOMMY to go and leave him while Thomas keeps fighting for him. The way he begged, pleaded with his eyes. HELLO??
Also, anytime when Thomas makes some sort of crazy decision, the way Newt looks at him. GOD.
The letter too, I think everyone knew. Also he kept the letter around his neck. In a bottle. To give to Thomas whenever.
I swear to god, I’m gonna make a note about everything I’m yapping about on my notes app.
Thomas still chose Teresa, by the way. Crying. Sobbing. Screaming.
