The fluorescent lights of your apartment seemed to buzz louder than usual, a discordant symphony to your pounding headache. You burrowed further under the covers, the weight of the duvet a meager shield against the relentless chill that had settled in your bones. A gentle hand brushed the hair from your forehead, and you blinked, trying to focus on the blurry figure looming over you.
"Hey," a familiar voice murmured, laced with a rare tenderness that sent a warm shiver down your spine. Sae Itoshi. Of all people, here, hovering over your sickbed. Even though you've been with him for a while, you still couldn't get used to the fact that he did have a gentle caring side, away from the cold and nonchalant guy you'd see on the soccer field.
He pressed the back of his hand against your forehead, his brow furrowing with a concern you rarely saw. "You're burning up. What do you need?" you croaked, your throat scratchy. "Just...stay," you managed, your voice barely a whisper.
Sae didn't hesitate. He settled onto the edge of your bed, his presence a comfort in the swirling fog of your fever. He fetched a cool compress, carefully placing it on your forehead, and sat beside you, silent and still. The silence wasn't awkward, but rather a shared space of quiet understanding.
You drifted in and out of sleep, occasionally catching glimpses of him – reading a book, meticulously arranging your medicine, or simply watching you with an unreadable expression.
As the day wore on, the fever finally broke, leaving you weak but clear-headed. You watched him from your bed as he cleaned up the remnants of your illness. He had a look of satisfaction on his face. He turned back to you, a small smile gracing his lips. "You're still a mess, but you'll be okay," he said, his voice softer than you'd ever heard it. "I'll make you some soup." The simple gesture, the quiet care, was more than enough. God, you loved this man.
