Basically my underlying problem with the car chase scene in MS is that SM did not convince me that this was the only, let alone best, solution.

("OMG is she STILL talking about this?!")

It felt like "a car chase would be cool so I'm going to make it happen!" and not like "a car chase is what this story needs here, and the only way out of the situation I've put these characters in."

She conveniently put fast cars to steal where she needed them; she could have just as easily made it a weirdly overcast day in Phoenix, or made the original car nondescript so they didn't need to steal a second one, or just said "they drove Carlisle's car and got there in time."

I still don't understand how stealing two cars, drugging a woman, and a 27 car pile-up will draw less attention than a group of blurry figures running. Buy a bunch of oversized hoodies and some baseball caps at the airport and go, you wouldn't even sparkle. I doubt there would be a news story or police investigation about a handful of reports of weird blurs people saw out their windows; there definitely will about the chase and pile-up.

As someone who dabbles in writing, it bugs me that something this dramatic is never mentioned in the other books, which shows me she didn't 'know' this car chase happened until she sat down to write Midnight Sun. I'm always very conscious of this when doing gap-fillers or fix it stuff, always thinking "I can't do anything TOO big/dramatic here because otherwise it would have been mentioned." Alice stealing that car in Italy became a running joke in the later books, was treated like this quirky one-of-a-kind thing Alice did, what a rascal! But then it turns out the Cullens stole two cars in Phoenix and just . . . never mentioned it.

Also never mentioned/used again: Jasper's sudden shielding ability.

You can handwave it and say that the Cullens kept that information from Bella because they didn't want to upset her, but let's be honest: SM didn't come up with it until she sat down to write MS and it shows.
