Hey that’s me
nobody asked BUT i do love horseshoe crabs, so:
horseshoe crab blood is widely used throughout the medical field for testing equipment for sterility and lack of toxins, especially in vaccines! they have immune cells that are extremely sensitive to toxins, which means that they are an especially effective means of detection.
while this is excellent for healthcare, it's not so great for horseshoe crabs. no other creature has these same cells - since horseshoe crabs are so old, as a species - which means that we harvest mass amounts of horseshoe crab blood every year for our own use. though the goal is to keep the crabs alive throughout the bloodletting process, about 10-30% of horseshoe crabs captured end up dying, either during the blood draw or afterwards due to blood loss.
needless to say, this is bad. horseshoe crab populations are declining gradually but consistently, and very little is known about them beyond their habits when they come to beaches to mate. (also of note - horseshoe crabs return to the same beaches each breeding season, and it's hypothesized that horseshoe crabs won't breed at any other locations, which worsens issues such as coastal urbanization for horseshoe crab populations.) they're really fantastic creatures, and besides, we have very little idea what the ecological impact of a potential horseshoe crab extinction might look like. either way, they have value simply in existing, in my opinion.
there is good news - an alternative has been developed! in the 90s, singaporean scientists developed a synthetic version of the molecule found in horseshoe blood. however, its use hasn't been approved in many countries (including the usa), and with COVID bringing the development of many more vaccines, horseshoe crab blood is in high demand. in addition, this isn't the only threat to horseshoe crab populations - habitat destruction, fishing, and hunting of horseshoe crabs are still lowering their numbers.
so is all hope lost for horseshoe crabs? i wouldn't say so, though i'm no expert. wildlife conservation centers like the international union for the conservation of nature (ICUN) are working towards passing protections for horseshoe crabs, and there are almost certainly researchers working towards horseshoe crab blood alternatives. i doubt that these crabs are near the brink of extinction, but it's important that we ensure their safety before it's too late.

if you don’t support people with ‘scary’ mental illnesses, you are not an ally.
you need to support people with ASPD
you need to support people with NPD
you need to support people with DID/OSDD
you need to support people with schizophrenia
you need to support people with psychosis
you need to support people with delusions
and so many more disorders that society has deemed scary, dangerous and/or bad.
