crazy how i find myself thinking i've got a handle on it all finally and then i see the ways that other people tangle their lives together so easily and live so easily together with their friends and i feel like that girl at the top of the stairs painting by norman rockwell
i'll always be here
Yeah okay Ill reblog that!
Not a scholar at first, but the guy who wrote Jaws hated that people used it to justify hating sharks so much he dedicated the rest of his life to shark research and advocacy.
The woman who popularized gender reveals wishes she hadn't, afaik.
(afaik- the woman who popularized gender reveals did so because she had a long history of miscarriages. The reveal was a celebration of the fact that one of her pregnancies had gotten far enough that there WAS a physical sex to reveal. It was never intended to be like... *gestures at modern gender reveals* all that. That same kid later came out as trans and yes, the family had a second gender reveal for that lol.)

L. David Mech, who popularised the idea that there were 'alpha' and 'beta' wolves in his 1970 book The Wolf, has spent the rest of his career trying to debunk this. (The original studies were done on captive wolves, and thus didn't simulate an accurate model of wolf pack dynamics.)
The idea that wolf packs are led by a merciless dictator, or alpha wolf, comes from old studies of captive wolves. In the wild, wolf packs a
In the wild, researchers have found that most wolf packs are simply families, led by a breeding pair, and bloody duels for supremacy are rare.
“What would be the value of calling a human father the alpha male?” says L. David Mech, a senior research scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey, who has studied wolf packs in the wild for decades. “He’s just the father of the family. And that’s exactly the way it is with wolves.”
lmao i’m reading this essay from the 1580s that mentions how if you were wearing a big elizabethan ruff and you got caught in the rain it would flip up in the wind and hit you in the face, and then you’d have to spend the rest of the day with your stupid soggy ruff all flaccid on your shoulders. can you imagine. whole new potentials for pathetic unlocked

Carol - the writer
I think it's funny that Carol essentially represents a very common writer/creative trope in media and one of the reasons people are having trouble empathizing with it is because she is a woman (and arguably queer).
It is literally such a stereotype in shows\movies etc. for a creative to disparage their work despite having success. And people are convinced she is legit miserable and hates her fans when her actions indicate otherwise.
She likes her work! I have seen this spoken about in numerous interviews. Look at her cabinet full of copies, look at the way she is eager to find out if she made top 20, shuffling around for Helen's phone in the ice hotel. I also don't think it supposed to be acting when you see the liveliness and enthusiasm on her face while she is reading an excerpt from Bloodsong of Wycaro to her fans.
Despite being at the end of the tour, you still see her writing full length messages while signing and engaging with them.
In the interviews Rhea and Vance have talked about how "She doesn't hate her fans. She hates herself." This is why she calls her fans "dummies." What she is actually saying is 'why would you fall for an imposter like me? You must be a fool, a dummy.'
They have also said she puts down her success because she is afraid of the stakes. If she acknowledges how great it is to have such success, that means she could also lose it.
In the scene with Hivemind Larry, he brings up Moira McAllister and Carol says:
Oh but look who KEPT the "dumb" hat?
Who was holding back tears when Larry told her that her fantasy world literally kept the woman who knitted that hat from killing herself?
If you are familiar with fandom spaces, you know these kinds of stories aren't melodrama. The fandom spaces that are notoriously filled with disabled people, neurodivergent people, queer people, who have been excluded or felt like outliers, relying on fantasy to keep them going. Carol is touched by finding this out. That is why she pulls that hat out shortly after that conversation while in a drugged/impaired state.
C'mon, this is legit such a common trope. In many ways, it is stereotypical marriage of writer and imposter syndrome (and hey I am enjoying it.) I just find it crazy that there seems to be a certain group of people (other websites really, not here) completely taking the things she says at face value like she just hates the world. We have seen this play out in so many other stories. Why is the assumption that she is just a horrible, miserable woman rather than the typical brooding artist?
If she hated the world, she would be happy seeing everyone reduced to drones that she could take advantage or order at her whim. That, so far, isn't what we have witnessed though— have we?
Anyways happy episode 6 release day! Can't wait for 9pm EST!
I love that Vince Gilligan, one of the best showrunners out there, made Carol a writer who isn't particularly great, and still shows so much affection for her and for her fans. The people who make trash are still important, and the love people have for that trash is not just valid but life changing. Vince Gilligan makes Art but he isn't patronizing about cotton candy.
And she knows where Moira is from! She's not just like "I have a fan who makes me stupid hats." And in episode one she knows the people who post about her books on social media by name and knows facts about them. Her fandom isn't just important to her as a faceless mass, they're important to her as individuals.
