The Birth & Art Connection

As I’ve been working for a few months on my re-branding my business (spoiler: new name coming soon!), I’ve been intent on finding the connection to birth and art. More so, I’m seeking to describe the connection and why I feel so called to bring together birth and art.

I posted on my Instagram earlier this week about the connection I have felt in birth work/pregnancy/birth and art. I’ve noticed that each process is full of some type of emotive magic. It’s transformative and expressive. Both processes bring you to a place of wonder and curiosity about life our place in it. When I’m painting, my whole attention is to what I am creating, just as when we are pregnant or in labor or even in the throws of postpartum life, all of our focus is on that event. It has truly been a beautiful journey to break down and analyze my role as an artist, birth worker, and birthing person and mother. 

The creativity that flows through when you are nesting and picking out a name for your child is that same that flows through when painting or hand lettering a special affirmation. It all leads us to a creation. Something that is a part of you, someone or something that forever holds a piece of your identity.

So as this journey of re-imagining my business comes to a very exciting end where I can finally share a new name, new ideas, and further support you in a creative way, it has been a struggle. Where deciding to be a vulnerable business owner and share my life as well as all forms of my work in one spot can either be viewed as totally unfocused or be welcomed as something fresh in our community. I look forward to continuing to share this flexible brand, this flexible version of myself with you and aiding you in whatever amazing and sometimes painful journey you are on; be it pregnancy, fertility/TTC, labor and early postpartum, or motherhood.

Then & now. : : : I’m counting down the days (18 to be exact) before Nasyah’s first bEARTHday. We are on the cusp of leaving behind infancy, early postpartum, being a “new” parent, and saying “I just had a baby.” I wait eagerly but patiently for the 22nd as I know it will be an odd mix of emotions. It’s my last week of “day job.” : : For the last 8-10 months I’ve been juggling birth work, being a new mom, and my day job/career/pre-birth work field. : : Since 2013, I’ve been in the field of working with children and youth. Erica Y. Serrano Birth Services is getting creative!

So what does that mean!? I’ll get right to the point and then give details as this blog goes on.

This means, I am dropping my name as a doula along with doula services and transitioning into a creative/ art based birth service business. 😱😱

Long story short, with the emotional pile up I’ve experienced of birth trauma, postpartum depression and anxiety, starting a new business, moving homes, finding my new identity as a mother|wife|woman, and getting diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, being a doula become too heavy a role to fill.

This was a bittersweet realization but one that made me feel like I finally hit the nail on the head for my calling and passions. It was a deep and personal decision that I sought counsel on in order to ensure that I wasn’t just giving up but rather, finding my niche. And find my niche I did! Which is where you, my readers|followers|friends come in. What does that mean for those of you who follow my business and are potentially using my services?

In truth it means I am more accessible to be with you on your journey through pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and early parenting. 🙌🏼

I will still be offering placenta encapsulation services through Vegas Family Doulas (linked below) and I have decided to become a certified Childbirth Educator. In the near future I will teach general CBE classes, comfort measures for labor, and more.

Now for the creativity!!! 🌬

Along with my call for open commissions for Affirmation Art kits, I will be offering some ready to ship Affirmations as well as other pieces to decorate your homes and welcome your newest family member.

And the thing I’m most excited about at the moment! Erica Y. Serrano Birth Services will be hosting their first workshop on June 8th! ✨

This workshop will be all about Affirmations and how they can be a useful self-care tool in birth and postpartum. You will have the opportunity to learn some watercolor techniques and create your own painting to take home!

We observed Earth Day by spending a lot of time outside!
