A companion:
Grace
no fandom is safe from getting warrior cat ified
Phm from Adrian's perspective is just what if you were Penelope and Odysseus came home but he also brought a jellyfish and keeps begging you to build a fish tank for the jellyfish and make jellyfish food for the jellyfish and youre an ancient Greek whos never seen a jellyfish and you cant even comprehend how your going to do it but youre going to because if you dont Odysseus may kill himself. And also the jellyfish can do like. Witchcraft.
Go! Rocky, Go!
I just watched the Japanese dub version of PHM and I would like to say thereās a few liberties they took that I found very devastating and cool to share for those who donāt understand Japanese (because the subtitles only show the English):
-Hanae Natsuki as Rocky first of all! I did not expect that
-I love that Grace teaches Rocky āJapaneseā through the translator but also he translates English words too in the computer. Every time I heard Rocky speak English in the Japanese dub, I was laughing because Grace was basically teaching Rocky two languages.
-When everyone was confronting Grace about getting on the ship (first time), Grace says he has 30 years left to live on earth, and in the Japanese version, Stratt interrupts him by saying āå Øč¶ć.ā The translation means āItās gonna be a total destruction.ā I thought that was so devastating
-Also Also Also the last scene with Stratt and Grace left me so sad but also understanding a bit of Graceās character more. Basically, he starts by saying that āhe canāt do itā in very polite Japanese (this is called keigo and you use it in professional settings). Before this, he had always talked to Stratt with impolite Japanese, implying that he saw her as a friend. But not even before she took his autonomy away, when she āgave him the optionā to get on the ship or not, he already threw their relationship away. And I think thatās so sad. Even the thought of Grace getting on the ship severed the previous relationships he had with everyone.
You don't have to grieve alone.
Eridians must be absolutely amazed that Grace can be woken up before his sleep cycle is finished. They take advantage of this and fit the biodome's bedroom with a remotely-triggered alarm system, so if something ever goes wrong with the life support systems while Grace is asleep, they can wake him up and have him move to safety. But, being that their sleep is more like a deep dormancy, they WAY overestimate what it takes to forcibly wake someone up.
The first time they have to use it (over something stupid like a tiny ammonia leak), Grace wakes up to like three different foghorns and a hundred camera flashes going off at once and is like HOLY GEEZ THE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US
(eta if someone with art talent wants to make this a proper eridian welcoming committee comic please do!)
RIP Rockyās project
I just learned that they filmed PHM in order, and I am weirdly excited about it. One of the things that frustrates me most about filmed mediums, specifically, is that it's SO much more difficult for actors to be in character, locked in, when they haven't experienced something yet. It also allows for less improvisation (something they held in high esteem for PHM and is yet another thing I love about this film) due to continuity problems. Filming it in order also meant that Ryan Gosling had already spent weeks filming alone before Rocky showed up, which he himself said in an interview made it so much easier to embody Ryland. "By the time Rocky shows up, I genuinely need a friend." Direct quote!!! The fact that James Ortiz and his team were in sync enough with the Rocky puppet to do improv, so much so that Ryan didn't feel like he was acting with a puppet. The fact that Gosling selected this film specifically, asked Chris and Phil to direct, and then committed SO HARD to the character. He was SO involved in making this movie and it shows! I thought I was over it but I am not. Film of the decade for me guys.
i love rocky being the break in the petrova line.
I'm obsessed with this little moment where Stratt is like reaching out to say Hi to Grace but instead of patting his shoulder or something she pats his tiny little chair. and filmed from behind a barrier
Additions:
- She is carrying her two giant coffees here and BALANCES THEM BOTH IN ONE HAND to touch his chair
- Heās like āwhat the heck is happeningā and then he turns around and sees itās her and does this fond little smile
ADDITION #3 after watching this 5 thousand times: he realizes itās her, smiles sweetly, immediately turns back away, and then once sheās walked past him HE TURNS AROUND TO SMILE AT HER AGAIN ONCE SHE CANāT SEE HIM
