Digimon Tamers 29 - This is a Haunted Castle! The Lost Culumon's Great Escape / Goliath

Previously on Digimon Tamers: Hirokazu and Kenta fucked up again. At her limit with their incompetence, Ruki fired them both. Fortunately, they landed on their feet, picking up new jobs as gofers for Akiyama Ryō of Adventure fame. I think they're gonna be alright.

Yeah, once again, Ryo as an interdimensional traveler who has been retconned into the Tamers world could be an interesting concept to work with, but Ryo as a character is just background noise, and without the Millenniummon thingies he is just boring. Can do something with Ruki, but only for Ruki's character development, and the shipping angle doesn't work. Ryo as this dude who was good at cards, then was good at powering Cyberdramon up, is boring. Videogame player character is all he has.

Takato, you wear your heart on your sleeve as a rule, stop trying to look cool by pretending you are something you are not, she likes you as you are. Good save tho. Anyway, 1 deva down, and one which didn't really do much, but oh well, that's what happens when you have 12 minibosses, the remaining 2 appear to be active ones, and then we have the one we haven't seen yet. Back to the plot.

Digimon Tamers 28 - Friend or Foe!? The Legendary Tamer Akiyama Ryō / Blame It On Ryo

Previously on Digimon Tamers: Fearing that he'd be replaced by a puppy, Impmon inadvertently inspired the plot of Boss Baby. For this, God punished him by turning him into a punk biker.

No Davis promise this week so let's get straight into it. The search for Culumon and for each other continues!

One key aspect to get Ryo is his Japanese voice actor, Jun'ichi Kanemaru. He is voiced by Sonic the Hedgehog. Ryo remains a video game protagonist as a character. He does quests and beats up opponents, and is innately good at both the main combat system and at the sidequest card game system, but has no character depth because all he is is a vehicle for a self insert. No arc, grunt work, can get Ruki to self-reflect, because getting reminded of her one failure in her comfort occupation before all this started, after being stuck with these 2 guys, ought to bring back old habits. Because, knowing how Ruki was at the start of the series, she OUGHT to have spent months ruminating about the one guy who beat her, and then fucking disappeared and couldn't rematch. All the victories afterwards wouldn't really scratch the itch. And, from a Doylist perspective, Ryo was mandated into the series, so there wasn't really much of an interest into developing him. He is there, having fun playing Digimon. Cyberdramon, well, is pretty much confirmed to be the Brave Tamer character as well, and thus is technically also Millenniummon, which means he is also technically both the guy responsible for Apocalymon breaching the firewall, and also both the Dark Master Mugendramon, and the Kaiser's Chimeramon. Weird campfire mate that's for sure. Still, a Pendulum Digimon, which Brave Tamer gave an entire evolution line with main 'mon Monodramon, and which bled into at least the American D-Power toy:

Former standalone Perfect Cyberdramon got Child Monodramon, Adult Strikedramon and Ultimate Justimon. And, well, I'm a sucker for Xenomorph-influenced designs, but, this Cyberdramon is an edgy fuck; guess having the timeline consumer as part of your being isn't really good for your mental health. Buut yeah, this guy isn't much of a character, and more of a mandated extended cameo of a video game player character, whose main narrative purpose is either providing muscle, or giving Ruki somebody to resent but without a complicated family history; a friendly rival from a time in her life when she didn't do friends. Can work well for her, but he is no engaging character on his own.

Cyberdramon, well, is pretty much confirmed to be the Brave Tamer character as well, and thus is technically also Millenniummon, which means he is also technically both the guy responsible for Apocalymon breaching the firewall, and also both the Dark Master Mugendramon, and the Kaiser's Chimeramon. Weird campfire mate that's for sure.

As I brought up in my post, whether Brave Tamer is canon (and thus whether Cyberdramon is partially Millenniummon) or not is complicated.

But from what I've read the idea that the Machinedramon and Kimeramon that merged to become Millenniummon are the specifically the Dark Masters' Machinedramon and the Kimeramon that Ken created is pure fanon, with nothing in the actual games or supplementary material to back it up, and fans tends to overly complicate and inflate Millenniummon's actual importance.

And whilst there is some material that says Millenniummon is responsible for Apocalymon, said material tends to be vague and contradictory especially when it comes to translations with some saying that Apocalymon was a by-product of Millenniummon's darkness or that Apocalymon simply appeared because of Millenniummon but wasn't like actively created by him. And either way this contradicts the official backstory given in both Digimon Adventure and interviews with the staff who worked on Digimon Adventure.

The second Ryo video game Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers also stated that Millenniummon created Diaboromon, but that was only included due to the fact that both the creators of the first Ryo video game Digimon Adventure: Cathode Tamer/Anode Tamer and the creators of the Digimon Adventure movie Our War Game both independently created villains that were meant to be the anthropomorphic personifications of the Y2K bug, without the others knowledge, and so this was just thrown in as a handwave to that contradiction. Which would have needed to have been addressed, since Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers starts with Ryo and Ken watching the final battle of Our War Game before Veemon shows up gives them their D-3 Digivices and takes them to the Digital World.

Digimon Tamers 27 - Impmon Evolves! The Terror of Demon Lord Beelzebumon / Motorcycle Madness

Previously on Digimon Tamers: Hirokazu and Kenta adopted a pair of doting grandparents who adored everything they do. But Ruki informed them that the pair of them being liked by someone isn't canon-compliant.

Kenta: What, compliant to what? We don't have a manga to follow. Ruki: Compliant to REALITY!!!

So they had to say goodbye and march back into the miserable desert.

This episode, Davis promises we'll find out whether Rika, Kazu, and Kenta will have better luck finding Culumon, or if their glider will crash before they can. Let's go!

I recall MudFrigimon being used on Digimon World, but it may had been an European localization deal? I know a friend had lend me the Spanish version (which had a progression-breaking bug that made it almost impossible to finish), then I got the UK Platinum version which AFAIK was the least buggy version of the game, but 20 years later I only have access to the US version I believe? And I get the feeling the Spanish Tamers dub may had used MudFrigimon? Dunno if I'm Mandela effect-ing myself, my bad.

Anyway, now we only have one deva left to see, the rabbit and we all know what to expect. The way the dog resembles Shisamon has always been a bit uncanny, as if they were to do something before not working on any sort of connection? And, well, Beelzebumon... We haven't seen him getting analyzed so we don't even have its level (although, well, been near a quarter of a century and there is quite a bit of franchise-wide familiarity hehe), and thus will wait for the next time we see him to talk a bit of trivia. Quite interesting how you talk about the connection to Envy, I agree and have a bit of a rant related to that hehe. Next time, tie-ins and their execution as we check on our other group!

it’s not about actually being gifted, it’s about an initial higher scoring on standardized testing that means little to nothing or being good at learning in the way elementary and middle school wants you to, so you get marked as ‘advanced’. in reality, maybe you had faster development in certain areas, but the issue with being a gifted kid isn’t that “everyone told me I was so cool and special for reading and then I actually wasn’t :(” it’s “I wasn’t properly taught to handle things not coming easily to me, but the adults around me were counting on me not being a ‘difficult’ child in school.”

people who use it as some weird bragging method or interpret it that way are ignoring the way a lot of school systems force certain roles on students to simplify the learning process. If your kid doesn’t need to take notes to understand a science concept bc they get it naturally, well that’s good, but now you’re not teaching them how to take notes and they’re not learning that important soft skill. but because ‘gifted’ kids are easy and don’t show that they’re falling behind in learning in other categories that are harder to quantify, they eventually fall behind after that catches up to them. It’s about the failures of a one size fits all school system trying to compensate in the worst way possible.

And also the thing where ‘gifted’ kids are super likely to also be neuroatypical, which they don’t get screened for because they appear to be doing well in school. Or “You can’t be ADHD/autistic/etc, because you’re doing so well in school!”. Or being shamed for developing mental health issues/generally not being able to keep up with school work later, because you USED TO BE able to do it just fine.

Or the assumption that just because you can read well or you like math class, you’re somehow more EMOTIONALLY mature than your little kid brain is actually capable of being.

Or gifted kids whose parents and teachers put immense pressure on them to Do Great Things and Save The World and you’re like. “I’m 10 and I have no idea how to do that, but everyone is saying that’s my job?”.

This is the best “gifted kid” post out there. I never took notes until college because I didn’t have to, snd when it got challenging I had to literally teach myself note taking at age 18. It also fucks with your perception of asking for help - you’re advanced, you’re competent, you should be able to understand every topic easily. Asking for help/going to office hours/asking for a tutor feels like failing when you were praised in your early years for not needing to do that.

And it is actually a neurodivergence, involving decoupled cognitive and emotional development, and often presenting alongside ADHD and/or ASD. Which often were misdiagnosed and lumped with that, because "kid smart but weird". And the fucking name it gets makes things worse, because you either see people pretending other neurodivergences don't exist and their kid got "the good one", or people pretending this one doesn't exist, and all there is is ADHD and ASD. But the kid who thinks like an 8 year old yet feels like a 5 year old at age 5 shouldn't be just defined by how well they do schoolwork for kids aged 5.

Digimon Tamers 26 - A Small World! Jijimon and Babamon of the Deep Windy Valley / Kazu and Kenta's Excellent Adventure

Previously on Digimon Tamers: The Tamers arrived in the Digital World and spent all day staring at the sun. Then they made a campfire but it was buried in a potato landslide. Despite starving, nobody thought to bring any potatoes with them because they're 10 and would rather eat cookies than vegetables.

This episode, Davis promised that we're going to find out what the data stream will do to Rika, Kazu, and Kenta! Seems like a safe bet. Let's go!

Oh, and the dub title is a reference to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure but this episode has nothing to do with time travel, so it's just comparing them strictly on the basis of personality alone. Rude. XD

Heh, entire episode without Takato and Jian, but not quite a Ruki episode because, rather than dealing with inner demons, she is dealing with huge dorks bwahaha.

I believe Babamon also played a role similar to Jijimon's Digimon World role; the Digital Card Battle game for the PSX. I'd say the joke with both of them is that they are at the highest level explicity because they are very old, rather than the legendary power of natural Ultimates.

no because the term "carcinization" was created to describe the tendency for marine decapod crustaceans to convergently evolve crab-like body plans, it was never supposed to be applicable to other animals!

I blame pop science for spreading it around as a funny term that got misunderstood and misapplied basically from that point onward. most other animal groups don't get their own term for this phenomena and carcinization does NOT apply because... these animals aren't evolving into crabs. only decapods do that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(decapods are the marine crustacean group with ten legs- true crabs, lobsters, hermit crabs, robber crabs, mantis shrimp, prawns, slipper lobsters, and all of their infinite assorted relatives in the deep blue sea)

Not only does carcinization only occur in decapod crustaceans, it specifically occurs in the group Anomura, which are the closest living relatives of true crabs, and I would argue that there aren't any anomurans that are particularly non-crablike to begin with. Most anomurans are typically called crabs in English, such as hermit crabs, king crabs, mole crabs, and porcelain crabs. The only anomurans not typically called crabs in English are a few lineages typically called squat lobsters:

Even then, some species of squat lobster (which are not true lobsters) are also called crabs, such as the yeti crab.

The interesting thing about carcinization is not that widely disparate lineages keep evolving into crabs, it is the remarkable specificity of the "crab" body plan that has evolved repeatedly within the true crab+anomuran group, primarily that the carapace is wider than long, the abdomen is extremely reduced in size and tightly folded under the body, and there is a tendency to walk sideways. Trying to find examples of carcinization in other groups of animals by loosening your definition of "crab" to include animals without this specific combination of features is missing the point. Animals are no more likely to evolve to be vaguely crab-shaped than they are to evolve to be vaguely shaped like any other animal.

Digimon Tamers 25 - Breaching the Digital World! Farewell to Our City / Brave New Digital World

Previously on Digimon Tamers: A small group of children told every adult in earshot that they were going to flee home and every adult was surprisingly chill about it. A cop did show up but just to give them a Walkie-Talkie and send them on their way.

I really don't think the single digital world notion really holds up? Around Adventure, yeah, you can see File Island is roughly the same there as in Digimon World, but by when 02 was rolling out things were already changing, and in the Tamers and Frontier years it was full throttle "each continuity has its own digital world and mechanics to it". I still got that feeling from recent games and series, so, I dunno what the intention is?

Anyway, new world in a quite alien way, and data packets and axolotl things... give them time!

orange and especially white lights deter bats and prevent them from reaching feeding grounds at nighttime. Please if you can, write to your local council and encourage red street lights!!!!

Digimon Tamers 24 - To the Digital World... The Day We Set Off / The Journey Begins

Previously on Digimon Tamers: After promising his superiors that he would not punch another hole in reality, Yamaki punched another hole in reality and then blew himself up. Takato discovered that he can cook bacon by screaming at it, but that victory came at great cost. And Leomon decided that being a little girl's hero isn't so bad, actually.

Leomon: Who needs the admiration of children when I can go brood in a damp tunnel and then sleep on a rock? Rocks are... fine... I've made a terrible mistake. Impmon: GET OUT OF MY BROODING TUNNEL

This episode, Davis has promised an answer to how the Tamers intend to reach the Digital World. Let's go!

Well, new version of the opening, incorporating Juri, Hirokazu and Kenta, unveiling the Ultimates of our 3 main 'mons, and the ominous 'mon walking behind Impmon. At least it isn't AS spoileriffic as 02's second half. Or Adventure's second ending, boy that one literally unveils everything the Chosen Children would have at their disposal 30 episodes ahead.

Seconding the bit of detail on Juri's home, baby photo we focus for a bit, versus parents in the present day. Reika and Yamaki being an item is something that is lowkey implied but not really a focus of the plot. Those characters HAVE lifes beyond being shadowy government types, good approach. And good to see Yamaki took the hint about the megalomania, it only took a bunch of explosions coming from Internet God and his kaiju pig apostle and an unnamed underling calling him out.

Lovely interstitial episode. Always loved how Guilmon's reveal played out, the shock and awe approach of having Guilmon walk in as if normal never gets old. Jian's family dynamics seem to focus more on his father and younger sister; mom and 2 elder sibilings pretty much exist and that's it, even if we get the implication of them having a healthy relationship. Elder sibilings don't really interact with the plot in any case, and at the end of the day, Jian is his father's son and closer to his 7 year old sister than to his middle-teens sibilings. Ruki's family dynamics seem to be healing, and this episode does an impeccable job. Bit by bit, and Renamon being pretty much accidentally fully discovered yet immediately accepted is sweet. Kenta was originally meant to be a background character, like Juri's friends. He was the guy who hung around Takato and Hirokazu (who was always meant to become a larger player and has the design to go with it), yet ended up joining them and Juri, and so he starts to get his characterization. I mean, he and Hirokazu will remain those two guys, but that doesn't mean they won't be doing things, or be distinct from each other. They end up feeling a bit like an odd couple once we find out their family lifes, but they weren't really covered in this episode beyond the different ways they explained how they said goodbye. As a kid I found the farewell to their teacher sweet and considerate. As an adult teacher, what the fuck are those babies doing?!?! And, Impmon is quite broken. Impmon was already cracked before the horse happened, and he has been left a mess. Now, we see a new take on Digital Worlds!

Digimon Tamers 23 - Digimon Go All Out! Charge Against the Wind / A World Apart

Previously on Digimon Tamers: A pig so large that it broke the world appeared. Yamaki gazed into the endless abyss that was the pig and decided to press the nuclear button that previously broke the sky, hoping it wouldn't break the sky akain. Gazing into the pig just made the Tamers want to hug their moms so I don't know what that was about. Maybe he's just weird.

Today, Davis promised that we'd find out whether Juggernaut's activation would spell the end of all Digimon.

This very week I had to work with 10 year old kids and them having to learn the same lesson multiple times may be quite accurate hehehe.

Can see where you are going tho, the main trio relearning lessons is at this point detrimental to the narrative, as is lingering in big battles past the debut of the Perfects, as the engaging part is seeing new developments in character and more unraveling of the misteries of what is going on. Takato and Guilmon got solved on MegaloGrowmon's debut, 10 episodes ago, and the second time Guilmon evolved, and its final return 12 episodes or so from now (which is quite reasonable and not what went down here) would be more effective if it hadn't been used when inappropiate.

Rat deva being used for Leomon's intro was a solid move, and I believe this upcoming arc works on some of the issues you bring up, but still, characters outside of the main duos aren't quite main characters, even if they grow into the roles. They do get more protagonism and character centric episodes, however, and oh boy late series Kenta you magnificent ass-saver, wouldn't believe you weren't supposed to go beyond being "Glasses boy".

Digimon Tamers 23 - Digimon Go All Out! Charge Against the Wind / A World Apart

Today, Davis promised that we'd find out whether Juggernaut's activation would spell the end of all Digimon.

Mmm, as I mentioned last week, I had never gotten to actually watch the Vikaralamon episodes, only knowing what happens, and... cool ideas, but improveable execution. Takato's doubts weren't really appropiate to his character at this point, almost in the middle of the series, and this was the perfect point to whip out the combination attack from the Perfects that punched above their weight in the movie. ARKs seem to also originate when a human and a Digimon make a bond, not just when a device is altered with a Blue Card. Guess some two dorks will be getting ideas now. And gotta wonder if Impmon ever got one to manifest for the kids, seeing how their relationship wasn't really stable. Yamaki got to eat a massive ammount of crow, even if only got called out by a random underling. Once again, gotta mention how Ryo Horikawa, best known for playing Vegeta, is voicing a Sun Wukong-like character. In a show where Masako Nozawa is playing a wild child with incredible combat poweress. And, even if we have 4 Devas left alive, bit of a spoiler warning but this is the last time one of them is a focal direct threat. Also, we get a hint on the identity of the bird, it looks like it has 2 eyes right on top of each other, at least on the side we see... Anyway, now Leomon has joined the team, an Adult who can punch above his weight class partnered with inexperienced but go-getter Juri, let's see how their dynamic goes. Next episode is also when the second version of the opening and second ending debut. The opening is quite spoilery by virtue of unshadowing silouettes, while the ending is BY FAR the LEAST spoilery second ending in the franchise. It only shows in advance a visual element of the Digital World.

Ruki and Juri being on the path to friendship is something that will benefit them. Ruki, at the end of the day, even if she starts out as the most qualified of the Tamers, is also the one who doesn't have anybody looking up to her beyond TCG parasocial stardom: Takato raises Guilmon and is part of a friend group, while Jen has Terriermon as an equal and has a younger sister. Ruki starts out with Renamon being an experienced workmate, and her social group is made up of her mother (conflict nonwithstanding) and grandmother. And now she gets somebody under her wing (after quite some development, this ain't happening before Dokugumon and IceDevimon).

I kept missing these 2 episodes back in the day (they were broadcasted on Christmas Eve and Day respectively I believe); I know what happens but haven't quite watched them. Still, setup, next one big event, and the following one consequences!

Digimon Tamers 21 - Juri's Partner!? My Leomon-sama / Jeri's Quest

Previously on Digimon Tamers: Yamaki stole the animation budget for the episode and used it to bribe the writers into feeding him lore instead. Consequntly, the Tamers were forced to rely on their own homemade props to get by.

This episode, Davis says we're going to find out what Yamaki has planned for Henry's dad. So look forward to that!

For the record, both the Japanese and English versions have the voice actor from Adventure repise their Leomon role, even if it is a different Leomon. I believe the intention was to have a similar vibe despite the different universes.

Juri is a delight to watch and doesn't deserve bad things to happen to her. And accepting support for processing negative feelings may be productive, but the conclusion I believe had a bit of humour in the way its sadness was accentuated. Give it time; Leomon is now living in Tokyo.

Funny how you mention the Monkey Deva, we shall see...

Anyway, calm before the storm episode, we are headed for a 2-parter now.

Digimon Tamers 20 - This is Our Trump Card! The Blue Card of Friendship /

Previously on Digimon Tamers: Impmon started trying to level up way too late in the series. Demanding the right to be trampled underhoof, Impmon led Indramon to water only to be drowned in it.

According to Davis, we'll find out today if it's possible to defeat the Devas. I feel like we've already answered that in previous episodes but let's see!

Digimon isn't really known for its animation quality, so yeah, long fights get rough. Still quite significant thematic nareative breakthroughs, and half the Devas are dead now.
