The Mentalist revival means we finally have to acknowledge how fucking hot Kimball Cho is, because that is one hunk of a man
"isn't it unrealistic that every time some rebellion shit goes on in District 12 it's someone related to or connected to Lucy Gray" no because Snow committed the cardinal sin of dating someone from a big family in a small town
Cho & Summer
Saddened by the fact there aren't even that many pics or gifs of them. Are they a rarepair? Does Reddit qualify them as such?
(A completely unnecessary Cho & Summer rant that nobody asked for. why do I keep making these... lol)
I am STILL annoyed that The Mentalist never properly followed through on Kimball Cho and Summer Edgecombe. Not because every couple needs a fairy-tale ending but the show just stopped investing in them. And Cho deserved much better.
With Jane and Lisbon, you can clearly see the long game. Even with Rigsby and Van Pelt, the writers always seemed to know where they were headed, even when they temporarily broke them apart. But with Cho and Summer, it sometimes feels as if the writers looked at one of the most interesting relationships on the show and collectively decided, "Anyway..." before moving on.
What makes this especially frustrating is that Summer brought out a side of Cho that almost nobody else could. One of the reasons Cho is such a great character is that he is incredibly difficult to read. Jane hides his emotions behind a smile. Lisbon hides hers behind responsibility. Cho hides his behind a brick wall. Then Summer comes along and starts putting cracks in it—not because she is some magical soulmate who fixes him, but because she is one of the few people in the entire series who is completely unimpressed by Kimball Cho.
Everybody else sees the stoic agent, the human lie detector, the ultra-competent investigator who can stare down a suspect without blinking. Summer sees a man and treats him like one. She teases him, challenges him, pushes back, and refuses to be intimidated by him. There is a recurring energy to their scenes that basically boils down to: "Yeah, yeah, impressive story, Kimball." And somehow that is exactly what he needs.
Cho is fiercely loyal, but he keeps people at arm's length. Summer is one of the very few characters who forces him to take emotional risks. Not always wisely. Not always healthily. But humanly. Through her, we get to see things that Cho rarely allows anyone else to see: protectiveness, frustration, disappointment, hope, genuine concern. For most characters, that's normal. For Cho, that's practically standing on a rooftop and screaming his feelings into the night.
Which is why I remain baffled by what the show eventually did with her.
I'm not even arguing that Cho and Summer had to be endgame. Maybe they wouldn't have worked long-term. Maybe life would have pulled them apart. Maybe they would have found their way back to each other years later. Fine. But at least give me something. Give me a meaningful reunion. Give me a conversation. Give me one scene in Season 7 where they meet for coffee and discover whether the spark is still there.
Instead, after seasons of development, after Cho literally fights for her, risks his career for her, and displays more emotion than he does in most of the rest of the series combined, the story suddenly goes: "Here's Marshall. We barely know him. They're getting married. Bye."
And I'm sorry, but that remains one of the strangest writing decisions in the entire show.
Anyway, this has been my annual reminder that The Mentalist gave us six seasons of Red John mythology, a well-deserved promotion for Kimball Cho, and somehow still managed to give us almost zero information about his personal life.
