How Magic Intersects with Quantum Physics and Chemistry
Let's consider Magic (specifically practical, ritual magic) as a system that finds unexpected yet logical intersections with quantum physics and chemistry.
magic is an area of interaction between consciousness and probabilistic processes, as well as chemical states of matter, that has not yet been formalized by science.
Magic and Quantum Physics
Quantum physics studies the behavior of matter and energy at the subatomic level. It is there that conventional laws (gravity, determinism) cease to function as we are accustomed, and principles that seem "magical" come into play.
The Observer and Intention (Wave Function Collapse)
Physics:
In quantum mechanics, a particle exists in a state of superposition (it is both a wave and a particle, both here and there) until a measurement is made. The act of observation forces the particle to "choose" a specific state. This is called wave function collapse.
The key debate: Does the observer's consciousness influence this process? The Copenhagen interpretation states: "reality is created by measurement." The von Neumann-Wigner hypothesis suggests that consciousness itself is the factor that causes the collapse.
Intersection with Magic:
A magical ritual is an act of intense, directed observation of the desired outcome.
a) When a magician performs a sigil ritual, they create a symbol of desire and then concentrate on it to the point of exhaustion (gnosis). In that moment, they act as the "Observer" demanding that reality take a specific form ("the guitar is given away," "the person is met").
b) Before the ritual, the event "gave/did not give" exists in a superposition of probabilities. The ritual is an attempt to direct consciousness to collapse the wave function in the desired direction.
Magical Principle: "The world is a mental projection. Change consciousness and you change the world."
Quantum Entanglement (Non-locality) and the Link to the Target
Physics:
Two particles can be entangled such that a change in the state of one particle instantly causes a change in the state of the other, even if they are separated by billions of light-years. Information between them travels faster than light, outside of space and time. Einstein called this "spooky action at a distance."
Intersection with Magic:
Magic works through material links (photo, hair, blood, nail, personal object).
a) A particle of the target (for example, blood on a photo) was once part of a single quantum system — the person's body.
b) In magic, it is believed that this particle remains forever "entangled" with the whole body. By acting on a doll (volt) containing the target's hair, the magician affects the target themselves, using the principle of non-locality.
c) Distance is irrelevant. A ritual on a photo works the same whether the target is in the next room or on another continent. This is a direct parallel to quantum non-locality.
Magical Principle: "As above, so below. As within, so without. The part equals the whole."
Quantum Tunneling Effect and "Impossible" Events
A particle can overcome an energy barrier even if its energy is "insufficient" according to classical physics. It sort of "seeps" through a wall. The probability is small but not zero.
Intersection with Magic:
The magician's task is to make the target commit an act that contradicts their logic and self-interest (like giving away an expensive thing for free).
a) The target's logic is the "energy barrier."
b) Magical influence is not a battering ram but the creation of conditions under which the probability of quantum tunneling of the decision through this barrier is drastically increased.
c) The target suddenly "seeps" through their own greed, logic, or caution. They do not understand how this decision came into their head. It is not a breaking of the will, but a "tunnel effect" in consciousness.
