I’m starting a new blog! Dedicated to the comings and goings of my many ocs in their strange little world! Scroll past if you have no interest, I’ll only be a little offended I swear!

I have loved writing for a long time, and love coming up with characters, but can never commit to a full story. So I came up with a solution! A blog full of short stories and interactions for my many characters, documenting their lives and events!

There will be drama, romance, funny quotes, and best of all, gayness! All interactions are within the same world (which will have its own intro), but can also be standalone.

I’m super super excited to share my beloved goblin children with the world! Even if no one reads, I will still love the fact that it’s there.

Genuinely not trying to start anything. I can see how telling someone to get a hobby isn’t ableist but it is very rooted in classism. I don’t know if you’ve had contact with poor people, but long work hours and limited resources often = no hobbies.

while things like limited time and transportation are absolutely huge issues and capitalism eats people alive, i need you to understand that:

1. there are free hobbies. some are very location dependent but some are less so. they can include:

nature watching

people watching

singing

dancing

hanging out with friends

going to the park

running

reading books from the library

surfing the internet at the library

writing or drawing at the library

collecting things like rocks

swimming in a public body of water

hiking

visiting free museums

lots of very area specific things i’m sure i can’t even imagine. like i have a friend who lives next to a lot where people who fix up vintage cars park every other weekend. he walks there and looks at the cars, and sometimes people share beer and chat.

2. there are also great hobbies you can do cheaply. here are some i and/or my friends do:

writing

drawing

making mixed media art

solving puzzles

playing card and board games

collecting knicknacks

taking pictures with a disposable camera

going to exercise centers with affordable rates like the Y

patronizing community centers that do things like put on plays, host bingo, etc.

volunteering

gardening

baking

cooking

brewing hard cider

visiting thrift shops and rummage sales

going to bars that host free live music

watching movies at cheap seat theaters

pressing flowers and leaves

making soap/candles/perfume

feeding birds

playing soccer or corn hole or the like

making jam and pickling things

tatting

origami

insect pinning

foraging

going to county fairs

3. sometimes poor people… have nice things or a hobby that they’re able to save for.

i have several friends who got family instruments passed down to them

i have a friend whose grandma left her a really nice sewing machine

i have a friend, who every few months, drives a ways and goes fishing

i have a friend who saves up and, once a year, spends around $250 to go sky diving

lower income people can have hobbies. they can have fun and find joy.

Something that I think should be an important part of solarpunk aesthetics is screws.

Look at your smartphone. No screws. You've got to have specialized tools to get inside your phone to repair something. There are certain pieces of tech that are glued in place and glue can't be undone without permanently breaking the bond.

But screws!

You can take apart a broken old radio, repair what's broken, and, if you were careful in taking it apart, you can put it back together and have a fully functioning radio and all you need is a common screwdriver!

It's hard to build screws and other mechanical fasteners because it requires more planning than clamps and glues, but isn't that what solarpunk is all about‽ It's about care and sustainability and and a radio or a computer built carefully with repair in mind is a sustainable computer that stays out of landfills and in use.

Love bombing is not a euphemism for "too much affection too soon," or "high desire for contact."

"Love bombing" is a term originally used in the context of cults to describe a deliberate and coordinated recruitment method that involved feigning friendship and interest in a potential recruit, via flattery, flirtation, physical affection, and very directed positive attention to everything the recruit says in order to lure them into the cult.

Since cults and abusive relationships operate in similar ways and use similar tactics, love bombing in an interpersonal relationship looks like manufacturing closeness in order to trap someone into a relationship in which the abuser has all the control.

And I know these days there's a million bullshit junky articles out there that make you think this is a symptom of cluster b personality disorders, but there is no way for you to be love bombing somebody without realizing it.

If you are an affectionate person and the level of affection and attention you give makes someone uncomfortable, you are not "accidentally" abusing them.

If you are uncomfortable with the level of affection and attention someone is paying you, they are not de facto abusing you.

Love bombing is about using someone's desire for human connection to fast track them into a situation you control that they will feel disinclined to leave.

This grouchy-looking bobtail squid was found during our Northeast U.S. Canyons expedition in 2013. Cephalopod expert Michael Vecchione shared this information about bobtail squids (order Sepiolida) back in 2018: “Because of their rounded bodies, sepiolids are generally known as ‘bobtail squids.’ Although called squids, bobtails have long been considered to be modified cuttlefishes that have lost the internal shell (cuttlebone). However, recent evidence from DNA sequencing indicates that they are not closely related to either squids or cuttlefishes, although they are in the broad group of 10-armed cephalopods.”

The fact that physical therapy is not a frontline treatment for chronic pain is a searing indictment of the global medical field.

Seriously. If you have chronic pain, limits on how much you can walk/move, or both go see a physical therapist.

I have had physical therapy ELIMINATE the following medical and pain problems, solely or in large part:

Lower back pain so severe I could at first not even walk to the bathroom (sciatic)

Foot pain whenever I walked (plantar fasciitis)

Three years of a fucked up ankle that was at times seriously impacting me

Pain when typing (carpal tunnel), at least twice

Widespread nerve damage that caused massive chronic pain and left me housebound for two years

The physical pain/fatigue/other results caused by having to recover from that kind level of pain and inactivity (cough being housebound) for so long

I try not to talk too much about my health on here, for a variety of reasons, but I am being newly reminded of how much basically every single person with chronic pain should be referred to physical therapy imho

If literally nothing else, because being in that much pain for that long causes a lot of inflammation and makes your body get stuck bracing and moving in ways that ALSO cause chronic pain, so that has to be addressed too.

If you don't have access to physical therapy, there are some really good resources, exercises, and videos online that can at least get you started (but be cautious if you can't get assessed in person), but I'm not qualified to vet or recommend any of those.

But if any of this sounds like it might help you, and you can go to physical therapy, please go to physical therapy.

It has been life-changing for me and has (in conjunction with other things) given me huge portions of my quality of life back.

I will say, if you have EDS, POTs, or Long Covid and/or ME/CFS, please for the love of god make sure your physical therapist is actually trained to help people with those conditions. I've only had one who really was equipped to help with my issues and every single other therapist ended up making me worse in the long run because they had no idea how to effectively treat me.

Physical Therapy is good and helpful, but make sure the person you're seeing knows what they're doing re: your conditions, and while feeling a little worse in the short term is normal, if it genuinely is making you worse stop going and find someone else.

I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. I have just been seeing a physiotherapist for the last six months who is actually trained in pain science, and it's made an astounding difference. I've been seeing physios since I was a literal child due to my hypermobility (my mum was a physio, so when I had issues she knew where to take me), but the change between the care I used to get and the care I can get now that pain science has progressed is night and day.

However, if your physio subscribes to GET (Graded Exercise Therapy) and you have ME/CFS, find another physio. GET is deeply flawed and based on junk science, and is much more likely to cause lasting harm than help you.
