Rick and Morty fan™ , “gifted kid” and high IQ

I’m angry as usual but no Jean-Claude, watching and understanding Rick and Morty doesn’t mean you have a high IQ.

I keep seing that meme where someone explain that, in order to understand Rick and Morty, they have a high IQ. Thats fucking b*llshit.

I will add that having a high IQ (>130) isn’t a cool things and that people get the wrong idea because of bad tropes of the “genius-child-with-a-high-IQ-OMG-they-can-do-math-at-3-y/o″ in movie, books, serie etc…

Just like many people have a false idea of what been on the autism spectrum really is like, most people things that having a high IQ mean that you’re a genius…They’re also dumb and ignorant af.

I know i will pass as a f*cking annoying person but i don’t care so : Stop. Making. Joke. About. Having. A. High. IQ.

It’s just as offensive as those OCD jokes (i got both an high IQ and OCD so stfu) or Anorexia jokes or Depression jokes. Why ? Because (and i’m not saying that those horrible mental illness are comparable to having a high IQ, I’m sayin that mocking the existence of those concerned by them is just as bad) you are invalidating a part of whole a*s person by using it in one of your stupid and unfunny joke.

Just because it is seem as good things (and wtf) in our society doesn’t mean it’s actually a good things.

It affect a lot of people (between 2 and 3% of the world population) and i’m tired of seeing everybody romanticizing it.

Stop thinking it’s cool, it’s not. It affect your daily life, keep you from making a lot of relation, make you feel like a weirdo, affect your school works most of the time in a bad way, 10% to 30% of kids with a high IQ have psychological and comportemental troubles, most of them are bullied, it cause hyperstemia, anxiety, depression, ED etc… It.Is.Not.Cool.

I’m tired of seeing people on tiktok talking about how they where a “gifted kid’. No, you where not. That is a term mainly use by people living in the U.S.A to call academically talented children. When i learned english and did research about how to call a person with a high IQ the term “gifted” came again. Gifted kids should be what we call child who passed an IQ test and get a result superior then 130 not Emy who used to get A in middle school.

There is barely any GIFTED community anywhere because other people like Amy or like a “Rick and Morty fan”™ (and any person who does this IQ  joke) steal what should been OUR space to talk.

I’m sick of both of them. We aren’t many but we still exist. Stop romantizing being GIFTED. Give us a place in the neurodivergent community and fucking let us in peace. We aren’t your meme or whatever. I’m tired of seeing kid being insulte in a comment section because they just say a fact about them that apparently make them a assh*ole who believe their better than everyone.

Go educate yourself and for the love of God, go learn to make actual joke.

You're right, I think that this is a fantastic, minimally invasive way of "recreating" a structure so that it doesn't damage the site! Visitors can look through a see through window with an image etched onto it that will superimpose a recreation of what experts think the building may have originally looked like.

I'll let you in on a secret. I have a doctorate in education, but the field’s basically just a 100 years old. We don’t really know what we’re doing. Our scholarly understanding of how learning happens is like astronomy 2000 years ago.

Most classroom practice is astrology.

Before the late 19th century, no human society had ever attempted to formally educate the entire populace. It was either aristocracy, meritocracy, or a blend. And always male.

We’re still smack-dab in the middle of the largest experiment on children ever done.

Most teachers perpetuate the “banking” model (Freire) used on them by their teachers, who likewise inherited it from theirs, etc.

Thus the elite “Lyceum” style of instruction continues even though it’s ineffectual with most kids.

What’s worse, the key strategies we’ve discovered, driven by cognitive science & child psychology, are quite regularly dismissed by pencil-pushing, test-driven administrators. Much like Trump ignores science, the majority of principals & superintendents I’ve known flout research.

Some definitions:

Banking model --> kids are like piggy banks: empty till you fill them with knowledge that you're the expert in.

Lyceum --> originally Aristotle's school, where the sons of land-owning citizens learned through lectures and research.

Things we (scholars) DO know:

-Homework doesn't really help, especially younger kids.

-Students don't learn a thing from testing. Most teachers don't either (it's supposed to help them tweak instruction, but that rarely happens).

-Spending too much time on weak subjects HURTS.

Do you want kids to learn? Here's something we've discovered: kids learn things that matter to them, either because the knowledge and skills are "cool," or because .... they give the kids tools to liberate themselves and their communities.

Maintaining the status quo? Nope.

Kids are acutely aware of injustice and by nature rebellious against the systems of authority that keep autonomy away from them.

If you're perpetuating those systems, teachers, you've already freaking lost.

They won't be learning much from you. Except what not to become. Sure, you can wear them down. That's what happened to most of you, isn't it? You saw the hideous flaw in the world and wanted to heal it. But year after numbing year, they made you learn their dogma by rote.

And now many of you are breaking the souls of children, too.

For what?

It's all smoke and mirrors. All the carefully crafted objectives, units and exams.

WE. DON'T. KNOW. HOW. PEOPLE. LEARN.

We barely understand the physical mechanisms behind MEMORY. But we DO know kids aren't empty piggy banks. They are BRIMMING with thought.

The last and most disgusting reality? The thing I hear in classroom after freaking classroom?

Education is all about capitalism.

"You need to learn these skills to get a good job." To be a good laborer. To help the wealthy generate more wealth, while you get scraps.

THAT is why modern education is a failure.

Its basic premise is monstrous.

"Why should I learn to read, Dr. Bowles?"

Because reading is magical. It makes life worth living. And being able to read, you can decode the strategies of your oppressors & stop them w/ their own words.

We are always begging for people to attend, there actually is the “hack” to invite your whole family but tell them to pretend they don’t know you. People with money are more willing to buy your work if they think many people likes it, so your mere presence eating our cheese and canapes will be a great helps. Please bring whoever you want too.

one time a pal of my pals was having a tough time selling their work in an art exhibit and called us up on the last day, ‘us’ being about 8 students who were Very hungry and also bored. We put on the nicest/artsiest clothes we had available (one dude had a legit fancy suit and put on some shades which were Bright Pink he looked like a movie star I swear) and rolled up to the show in pairs, separately. Fine Art Pal has some nice paintings! but nobody is really paying attention to them, so after getting some fancy cheese cubes in a manner that did not betray that we were actually a ravenous pack of starving students we casually wander around the show and then, fairly individually, drift to a stop by their work. Some of us even walked away, then came back a bit later ‘captivated’ by the art (it was actually really nice but recall we were all poor as shit and this was a help hustle). Our group’s interest naturally caught other folks, and eventually there was a small clump of about 15 people musing over this art, and within ten minutes the biggest piece had been snatched up by a shrewd investor. by the end of the exhibit every single piece was sold. It helped pay off the artist’s student debt and on that success they got into another exhibit! They’ve been doing well ever since.

So yes, please attend new artist shows, you get free cheese, get to look at nice art, and you can really help out people who deserve more attention.

If you are like me and always need to be working on something to keep your anxiety under control, during this quarentine why not helping scientists by looking at pictures of some neat penguins? or even galaxies?  There’s this site call Zooniverse, where you can help on scientific projects by analyzing pictures and data!  Right now my favorite project has returned, called Penguin Watch (where yeah, you get to watch penguins, it’s amazing)

you basically have to analyse photos looking for penguins, their chicks, eggs or even predators and human interaction But there are lots of interesting projects you can help in areas such as biology, physics, history or even art: 

Oh and the best part, some institutions even accept it as volunteering/service hour requirements for graduation and scholarships!! It’s helping me a lot during this time, so I thought it was worth sharing
