Quark doesn't have any children of his own (goodness knows he'd be paying out the nose for child support if he did) but he helped raise Nog. In a lot of ways, Nog is very much his kid.
When Quark was a kid, his father wasn't a good businessman. We learn over the course of the show that he's a lot more like his mother. She's brilliant with managing finances and gaining profit. Rom is much more like their father and for that reason Quark initially keeps him on a short leash. Rom's already been screwed over by his first wife and Quark feels like he has to protect his brother, even as he also tries to be a good ferengi by exploiting him.
Nog, raised with his father and uncle as his primary guardians, is acutely aware that his father has no real business sense. And while Nog is his father's son in many ways... he's also Quark's son. I doubt Quark would appreciate thinking it's his influence on Nog that leads him to join Starfleet, but Nog does inherit his uncle's intelligence and realizes that while he doesn't want the same life his father has... he doesn't want the life Quark has, either. Chasing profit and having it never be truly fulfilling enough. Nog's smart enough to figure out what he wants his own path to be, however, and he applies the lessons of their culture in ways that might not gain Quark's approval but does often gain his respect. (And inspires his father to eventually chart his own path too.)
Quark may never outright say it, but the way he feels at heart is pretty clearly that Nog is his kid too; we see him act parental, concerned... perhaps treating Nog at times the same way Ishka treated Quark and Rom when they were younger. Quark takes an interest in Nog's schooling when he's young and while he thinks Starfleet Academy is a mistake, still takes pride in being part of Nog's send off. Quark often 'mothers' Nog; I'm not really sure how else to put the way Quark will hover over Nog when he worries about his nephew, but it's definitely behavior Quark learned from his own mother. And when Nog is injured so badly during the war that he loses his leg, Quark nurses his nephew and even sets aside his own ideals to pick up a weapon in defense of them both from the attacking jem'hadar.
Every time I watch this show I think I come to love the way Quark, Rom, and Nog grow and change as a family over the course of the years a little more.
It's not even just alluded to, Quark openly stated that he enjoyed taking a nurturing parent role in his nephew's life.
From the script of Accession:
BASHIR: Quark, did you hear? Chief O'Brien is having a baby. QUARK: I thought your females carried your young. O'BRIEN: My wife. My wife is having the baby. QUARK: Congratulations. I remember when my nephew Nog was a baby. Cutest thing you ever saw. You know babies. Every little thing they pick up goes straight into their ears. I used to love reading to him. You know, See Brak acquire. Acquire, Brak, acquire.
geralt: dandelions deserve more respect than they get
geralt: you say "weeds” i say “widespread non-native edible plant and early-blooming pollinator resource that is not considered invasive because it behaves politely and does not cause deleterious ecological consequences"
yennefer: The dandelions aren't gonna fuck you bro
geralt: they have and they will
…okay but…jaskier’s family…being the addams family of the witcher world
all of them dress in black. all of them say offputting things at events. everyone is like 99.99999% sure they’ve all killed at LEAST three people. they REGULARLY hold court events in their graveyard with VERY unsettling comments about, “oh it does save time later, just having everyone here from the start”
and they love and support their bright-clothed songbird of a son, but jaskier is just the beloved blacksheep of the WEIRDEST godsdamned family on the continent
I need the tags added!!!! NEED!!!!
Late Night Host Jaskier interviews Geralt of Rivia, the next day the internet is on fire.
-
This is now a prompt, tag me if u write it, I wanna read it
My extremely silly dumbassery:
Jaskier: Mr. Rivia, thank you for coming on the show. Your viral video is causing quite the frenzy!
Geralt: *looks deadpan* Ciri’s video is not contagious.
Jaskier: The dilf has dad jokes. How fitting.
Geralt: The what has what now?
Jaskier: The entire world has fallen in love with your charmingly named mare, Roach.
Geralt: Yeah the asshole is acting like a real diva now, *looks at camera* so thanks for that.
Jaskier: Would you like to bring her out to do a replay of her trick?
Geralt: I would, but she bit three members of your staff when they tried to get her out of the trailer. I told you she’s an asshole.
Jaskier: *puzzled* then…why are you here, Mr. Rivia? What will we do?
*a girls voice sounds from the audience* Because my dad thinks you’re hot. Go on dad, ask him!
plot twist: Jaskier and Geralt are a couple in secret
Jaskier: Yes, Mr. Rivia, ask me! *stage-whispering at the audience* ask me what?
Geralt: *looks like he wants to die*: Ciri…
Jaskier: Did you just say you think I’m hot?
Geralt *a second away from commiting harakiri*: My daughter thinks I think you’re hot.
Jaskier *blushing*: And what do you think, Mr. Rivia?
Geralt: I think that should be your last name.
Jaskier: …
Ciri: *facepalms*
Jaskier: Did you just propose to me?
Geralt: Depends.
Jaskier: On what???
Geralt: Your answer, Mr. Pankratz.
So. I saw this headline today and was like, wait that sounds familiar. Then I remembered this one SCOTUS case that was heard in October, Andy Warhol foundation for the visual arts Inc. v. Lynn Goldsmith et al
This was a kind of weird case that I had forgotten about mostly bc the California pork case was argued last fall as well. And much as I love a good debate on what “transformative” means, the potential commerce clause implications of California pork case and what it could mean for environmental, labor, and birth control regulations had me more worried.
So Andy Warhol case. Basically, Goldsmith had taken a photo of Prince and after Prince died Warhol did a series of prints and one of them was basically that photo but the foundation claims that the “meaning and message” was changed enough to count as a “transformative work” and thus not subject to the copyright.
So the whole question is on what “transformative work” means and how to determine if a new work that is clearly derived from a copyrighted work has changed the meaning and message enough. (Justices talked color theory)
Why did this headline make me think of this? Well because that is the closest case that we have on this issue. Basically, if this case goes for Warhol, it will relax protections for truely original works and likely mean a court that would be more favorable to AI. If it goes for Goldsmith, original work is better protected but we would have to worry about derivited art. Bc there is a place for that. Just look at the Warhol pieces. To me at least both the original and the derived piece have value and it is important to recognize this.
Link at the bottom is for Oyez, a SCOTUS blog that is one of my go to sources for case summaries

Rewatching The Witcher expecting this guy to show up
me scrolling back up through my tumblr feed until the idea comes back
Editing? Oh you mean fic patching.
Protagonist now has more complex motivations.
Protagonist now remembers key facts about important people. He no longer develops convenient amnesia between cutscenes.
Protagonist now has a cooldown on certain adverbs. Adverbs have been buffed by 30% to compensate.
Developer note: Adverbs are important to writing but they are sometimes overused. This change keeps adverbs relevant while encouraging the use of adjectives and verbs.
The horse now has a name.
Deuteragonist snark power has been increased to 150, up from 75.
Characters now no longer reference the previous version’s climate and have been updated to react appropriately to the currently set season.
Solved a glitch where supernumerary limbs would sometimes emerge during complex physical interactions.
Should no longer display “[insertnamehere]” during conversations and narration. All of such occurrances have been replaced with the appropriate tags.
Conversation continuity has been improved. Characters will no longer inappropriately respond with lines from previous iterations of the narrative.
All references to “Event A” have been purged to reflect changes in narrative structure.
Now with more thematically-consistent swearing.
Back-to-back repeated words that resulted from sentence rearranging or start/stop editing have been cleared.
Paragraphs which contained two or more instances of the same adjective have had their adjectives updated to accurately reflect a player’s vocabulary inventory.
Minor time traveling issues have been resolved, all characters should now exist in the same tense.
Punctuation has been improved. Commas have been reduced by half.
Characters sighing has been reduced by 30%.
Characters looking at things or people during conversations has been reduced by 40%. To make up for this, characters thinking about the conversation has been boosted and descriptive narrative has been added.
Title has been applied.

Is star trek replicator meat kosher?
I feel like, if someone felt like puzzling it out, the two interesting routes to take would be "did a jew make this food, if they made this machine/loaded this machine/ordered the machine to make food?" (That last one is particularly promising/tangled because of the rules regarding gentiles preparing food with Jewish supervision: does it count as observing because it's not like you have the ability Stop the machine if it does something wrong.)
The question of "is the requirement for kosher slaughter removed if the meat was never alive?" gets fancy. Maybe if the meat that they scanned to produce the Meat Data from was kosher slaughtered, that would suffice? This is, I feel, an argument going on in the background of every star trek show.
But to know that we kinda have to know where a replicator is getting its data? Is it doing synthesis or reduplication of scanned foods? Does your kosher brisket contain components of a non-kosher cut that contained other qualities you asked for (like marbling or age?)
I think the even deeper question is, knowing how smart starfleet ships are, could one convert to Judaism, and would that solve the replicator problem?
I can only think of one actually sentient Starfleet ship (as opposed to being a space Alexa) in the entirety of Trek canon -- the Discovery's computer is sentient now -- and I think that would be the absolute minimum requirement for converting. So possibly that one ship could.
So to discuss whether or not the data has to be kosher, I think it's necessary to consider the purpose of kashrus. Laws around shekhita are intended to maintain ritual purity, yes, but also to reduce cruelty. I think that since, no matter what, no animal was harmed in the making of your replicated brisket, so long as it's in the style of a kosher animal, it's kosher.
A more complicated question I think is whether or not replicated pork or shellfish is actually treif, because you're not eating from the actual animals, only proteins that are organized like their flesh.
Yeah and maybe it's actually pareve, like an egg? I'm not sure!
There are arguments that the Impossible Burger isn't/can't be vegan as it uses ingredients that were tested on animals. If someone clean-room reverse-engineered the replicator pattern, is it meat in any way that matters?
On the other hand, Impossible Pork was apparently denied a certification entirely for name/vibes: https://www.jta.org/2021/09/27/food/plant-based-impossible-pork-is-here-but-will-it-be-kosher
I talked about that here. It's not just vibes, there are a lot of factors.
…tangential question.
If you replicated, say, grape juice, would it be grape juice? That is, would it qualify as fruit of the vine if it never grew on a vine?
That's kind of the whole thing. I don't know, and a question like that would kind of require a lot of stops along the way.
People keep asking 'would this be considered this' and the answer is 'that would really depend on which rabbi you ask, and which rulings were made on the way to having fully-functional replicators, and which steps we hit along the way, and the exact specifics of those replicators.'
back when the spotify wrapped playlist of 2018 came out, i was confused to find the mission impossible theme song at the top of my list. until i remembered. halloween 2018. i had work and my job required me to walk around a lot. i basically just took laps through a building filled with people. for hours. so i got this idea. i dressed up as a secret agent, a low key and professional costume. but i added a twist. i put the mission impossible song on repeat, set it to the lowest setting possible and put my phone in my pocket. and so the entire day i walked around, slowly driving people insane bc they kept hearing the faint music of mission impossible but when they tried to find the source i was already gone. i paused it whenever i paused walking so no one would figure out it was me. they even asked me if i’d heard it. i acted confused. it took them hours to figure out what the hell was going on and knowing i caused such chaos still fuels me to this very day
NB 👏 Does 👏 Not 👏 Mean 👏 Woman 👏 Lite
every single person who uses “nonbinary” as a stand-in for “people i consider to be women” needs to do some work on themselves, no matter their gender, sexuality, or any other marginalization
sometimes, when someone does a silly joke, and i respond to it sincerely, it is because i did not get the joke, and sometimes its because i am actually doing a joke myself. i like to call this "the autist's double bluff"
Every bookcase needs a guardian. I’ve named this little guy Steven. Did I spend way too much money on him? Yes. Was he worth it? Absolutely, he’s adorable and I love him.
Forgot to mention his name is Steven after the great golem Steve Rogers. I have a Bucky tsum tsum guarding my bookshelf at my parents house so they are partners.
Tumblr's software still thinks it's 1998 so you might want to get ready for 2025
After watching him play Benoit Blanc I think we all know that folks need to give Daniel Craig more roles he can have fun with, and by that I mean I need him to be the only human in a Muppets movie
FYCK YOU people who think hanukkah is the 'main jewish holiday' because it's near christmas.
GOYIM LOOK UPON THIS AND FUCKING WEEP. FUCKING. WEEP.
NO PLEASE FUCKING RB THIS. GENUINELY PEOPLE NEED TO FUCKING REALIZE.
Ok...
But what's the major one?!?!
NO FOR REAL
went on a rant abt this the other day.
jewish friends and i consider it the “gentile holiday”, as it is the one that makes them feel as though they are being accommodating and respectful of our culture because we have the potential to take off for christmas which is “basically chanukah, and their most important holiday too”
it is a minor holiday celebrating a war victory and an oil miracle.
but of course, we never talk about the other minor holidays. because they don’t intercept with christian holidays.
i’ve had people argue with me at length that western society is not christian-centric. this alone should be enough evidence.
NGL this whole thing has a very dark comedic tone when I look at it
idk abt the comedy part but yeah… if you check all the ones that say “no” to we’re alive it tells a story. also the amount of ones that say they tried to kill us. the history of antisemitism is long and bloody. it’s pretty heartbreaking to remember sometimes. how many we have lost.
a lot of people don’t realise that chanukah was an attempted assimilation too. it’s all for celebrating until we celebrate defeating goyim in their repeated assimilation attempts.
ironically, this is the holiday that ended up getting assimilated so thoroughly. that people think it’s our most important holiday.
to this very day our culture is distorted and twisted by gentiles. if you aren’t jewish and are reading this. take this opportunity to acknowledge the assimilation in our society. listen to jewish people this year as we tell you of our history.
As a footnote/sidebar for the gentiles, there's totally a Type Of Guy every good shul has several of who goes apeshit for Tu B'Shevat. No one goes apeshit for Hanukkah. It's just... Hanukkah, man.
Meanwhile, Tu B'Shevat is new year, but for trees. That whips ass.
