WILLOW (2022) MAIN CHARACTERS' D&D CLASSES

Writing this after episode 5, subject to change based on future events

I am right and you may argue with me inside your own head

Willow Ufgood: going rogue (heh) immediately...wizard. Over the course of the film and show, Willow has shown little to no innate facility for magic, instead demonstrating a capacity and ambition for learning it.

Elora Danan: okay, here we go: sorcerer.

Kit Tanthalos: fighter. Given her family, a little innate magic a la tieflings isn't out of the realm of possibility, and depending on how things go with the Crone (and her history with Bavmorda), this might get adjusted to hexblade warlock.

Jade Claymore: first of all, the most DnD name imaginable and I congratulate her for it. Second of all, paladin.

Thraxus "Relaxus" Boorman: ranger, actually. He sneaks, he explores, he fights well. Maybe a level of barbarian for taking and dealing powerful blows.

Graydon Hastur: bard. Now traditionally bards are spellcasters of course, but Willow is a low-magic setting so bear with me: Graydon's main contribution, so far, is as a lorekeeper and as a motivator. Extremely support class.

Perhaps unpopular opinion but I feel like you've gotten pretty much everything you need out of Hexblade by level 3:

- Hex Warrior (attack with Cha mod, medium armor and shield proficiency)

- Shield, Hex, Misty Step spells

- Hexblade's Curse

- Pact of the Blade

- a couple Eldritch Invocations

After that I feel like a multiclass (paladin, fighter, rogue?) might overall end up more flexible and fun. Keyword "might", not trying to harsh anybody's Hexblade groove.

Honor & Poise

Shortsword & Dagger, rare (requires attunement)

These weapons sing of the elegance of elven craftsmanship as each edge is both beautiful and functional within their design. The shortsword Honor and paired dagger Poise are not just mere showpieces. It’s no doubt that a master smith took their time to craft such blades to serve those who would use them honorably. Though these are two individual weapons, they only take one attunement slot. These weapons are considered magical for purposes of overcoming resistance.

While attuned to these weapons, you can use your reaction once per round to attempt to parry a melee or ranged weapon attack that is targeting you. Make a contested weapon attack roll with Poise versus the attack roll targeting you. If your result is higher, you successfully parry the attack and take no damage from it. Additionally, you gain a charge of Honor on successful parries. If the parry fails, the attack hits normally. You can use this feature a number of times per day equal to your proficiency bonus.

Honor. You can have a maximum of 5 honor charges at any time. Any charges that would be gained beyond 5 are lost. At the start of your turn, you can spend any number of honor charges to gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with these weapons, per charge spent. This bonus lasts until the end of your turn.

Abyssal Bloodline Sorcerer

We're going alphabetically which means we start with one of my more ambitious subclasses, the Abyssal Bloodline Sorcerer.

A caster that has their magic tied to the infinite layers of the abyss. and their ruling princes.

Choose one of the demon princes to bestow upon you a Mark of Darkness, which at first level grants you 1 of 9 unique cantrips, specifically made with that demon in mind, and a sweet of "Abyssal Corruptions" which are passive and active features that warp your body and function much like Warlock Invocations.

As you gain levels you'll be able to sculpt your body at will with Alter Self and Polymorph.

Finally, your capstone grants you a permanent demon familiar, but like. A big one!

It really seems like ranger/druid FEELS like it should be a really potent, even optimal multiclass but...I really don't think it is. Want a few more spells as a ranger? Take a couple druid levels. Want to be more more effective with weapons as a druid? Take ranger levels.

And yeah, you now have both Favored Enemy/Favored Foe and Wild Shape, and your spell list is slightly expanded, but...it's not cohesive, doesn't really enhance things the way you'd think or want. this ain't no sorcerer/paladin multiclass, that's for sure.

Your character can be a shithead without you treating your table badly, and for the love of anything, don’t burden your table with “nah, my character is an asshole so I’m not going to help”. I have absolutely seen and encouraged parties to leave those characters at the inn.

On the subject of safety tools for doing this, one of the best ways to RP a character that’s an asshole and part of the process of acquiring consent from your table to do it is making sure everyone playing with you, the DM included, has access to a loophole to manipulate your character when necessary for the plot. Even if you get all the rest of this right, and just as important as your character needing to fulfill a critical function in the group, the asshole needs to have an off switch. There has to be a way to render the inconveniences your character provides to the party inert in a situation where the interruption would almost certainly occur but provide nothing of value to the play session for the players OR the DM. One of my old tables developed a Paladin Rule about this function of negative character behavior. Any asshole character that would die on the hill of “it doesn’t matter if we’re in the middle of a critical investigation and this will suck the fun out of the session, we are going to need to get a search warrant to pick the lock to get into into this bad guy mansion we just heard a scream coming from” has some sort of obsessive tendencies that their associates would discover sooner or later. If the DM has not prepared a backup leg of the session for the party to go acquire a search warrant, being an asshole would hurt the session, so the table needs to flip the off switch. Fortunately, everyone has passed their perception checks, the paladin knows a lot about engineering by choice, and also just happens to get a bonus skill point from the DM every level to put into Profession: Herbalist. While the rogue is picking the lock on the mansion’s front door to act like it was open the entire time, the bard has pointed out some strange non-native moss growing on a cobblestone in the side of the entryway, and consequently the paladin MUST spend the next several minutes facing away from the door explaining to the bard that the masons responsible for cobbling the entryway must have had this stone quarried near some specific wetlands to the east. Make your drunk nasty fighter a compulsive gambler and let the party occasionally bet she can’t do something important that’s about to happen while she’s stone cold sober. Make your sticky fingered rogue never steal from elves because of this one time he got jumped in the woods, so the party gives important treasure to the elf player until they get back to town. Make your mad alchemist who doesn’t care about splash damage carry a ton of herbal poultices because they hate the smell of gunpowder and chemical fumes that gets left behind after a fight so the party always gets quick medical attention to offset it.

Background Feats inspired by "Spelljammer - Adventures in Space"

So since the newest adventure for 5e now includes feats with backgrounds, something WotC has previously started to introduce with the more recent UAs, I wanted to look at the PHB backgrounds and see which feats (also from the PHB) which make sense to attach them to which background! So here's my quick attempt at this where I limited myself to three options which seemed to me to make the most sense. Enjoy!

Also as a sidenote: if a feat were to involve an ability score increase, that would not be granted.
