Gloom Stalker: Reshrouded | Become the batman! Hunt in the night without magically blinking in and out of vision with a lightbulb
PDFs of this and more can be found over on at my Patreon here! I release everything for free, so your support makes this possible. I've also started making a new system based off of 5e, 6th Dawn! Become a patron and join the playtest.
So, this month's theme is colours, and to start I've immediately gone with the opposite with no colour at all… or is it every colour? Additive or Subtractive colour theory supremacy in the comments, please!
Anyway I rewrote the gloom stalker. I was given the suggestion for it to be a repeated jump scare subclass, which I thought was neat, so I went with it. I also wanted to get rid of its main flaw, which to me was the fact that it's main gimmick, like the assassin, was only usable on its first turn. Well, it's actual gimmick was turning invisible in the dark, which was alright, but weird. And when I had a gloom stalker in my party, I did make them blink in and out of reality with a lamp.
Night Eye
This is just darkvision, useful, effective, thematically important. But since the class is a darkness hunter, the low-light penalty to checks is inconvenient.
Weakness in Uncertainty
This name is a bit of a stretch, but yeah. Anyway, I was fighting with myself for a while what to put on this. The trigger ensures that the attack already has advantage, but I didn't want to just add more damage. The ranger already has several things for that. In the end, I went with increased crit range, but party wide.
Also, because I want melee options, the ability to creep up behind someone and stab them. The lack of any flanking is really troublesome. I'll need to fix that later.
Out of Sight
Nothing new, the ability to hide in darkness just by it being dark is handy, and I feel is a sufficient replacement for darkness auto invis
Out of Mind
This one was an interesting idea, and it paired with the other name so well. An important part of jump scares is having your guard down, so being able to 'resuprise' your enemy seemed fun.
Night Runner
The fact that any breaking of cover tends to break stealth is unfortunate. So here we are.
The Speed of Dark
And now you get to use your very particularly worded first feature with all your attacks! Yes, you can stack the increased crit range, or you know, spread it.
And now to plug my stuff. I release homebrews weekly over on my Patreon. Anyone who pledges $1 or more per post don't have to wait a month to see them, and also help fund my being alive habit.
At the moment, they have exclusive access to the following:
Rainbow Dragons
Way of the Five Winds
Colourful Desserts
Additional Points of Inspiration
I also have four classes, and two splatbooks over on DriveThruRPG to check out:
The Rift Binder. A class specialising in summoning monsters and controlling the battlefield.
The Witch Knight. A class that combines swords and sorcery in the most literal way.
The Werebeast. A class that turns you into a half beast to destroy your foes.
The Beguiler. A spellcaster dedicated to illusions, enchantments, and general fuckery.
d'Artagnan's Adventurer Almanac. A compendium of races, subclasses, feats, spells, monsters and more!
d'Artagnan's Lycanthrope Survival Guide. A book of lore, stats, and werebeast subclasses for lycanthropes.
