I wish people understood that the south isn't all just one big monolith. Like yeah there's a history of activism for workers rights and there's some progressive circles here. But there's also a big majority of racist white people in charge here and that is definitely reflected in our school systems and laws.
Overarching Conservative policy is achieved by gerrymandering and voter suppression. This means the gov largely silences poc, progressives etc. to lift up the voices of white conservatives. Both groups exist, but you only see one reflected in policy. People hating on the south forget how many poc live there.
