So much love for this.
The children of a medieval village; the residents of the New Jersey Pine Barrens (historical and current); and an extended family from the American South including a grandmother with dementia who just revealed herself to have been hiding her father’s body in the attic for half a century.
I have no idea how the zombie apocalypse is gonna play out here, but by God it’ll be entertaining.
(Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! by Laura Amy Schlitz; The Pine Barrens by John McPhee; Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson.)
A rebel against space fascism with a nutty dead general in her head; a group of dysfunctional, superpowered former child heroes; and seven people trying and failing to exit tertiary education.
… I kind of feel like, I’m screwed but at least so are the zombies?
An assortment of Russian nobles, a Wizzard, and the Mighty Nein.
Tsuredure, Critical Role, Iron Fist
Rick Castle, Kate Beckett (Castle)Jessica Day, Winston Bishop (New Girl), the Belchers(Bobs Burgers)
Pretty sure my team would kick ass... If Tina can date an entire basketball team of zombies she can win the zombie apocalypse.
Plus Jessica Day always has snacks.
Plus the amount of times that Beckett and Castle almost die but dont (falling off a building, freezing to death, catching some disease some guy stole from a lab, almost drowning). They have more lives than a cat
Apparently a part of the reason why farmed bees stay in the beehives that humans build for them is because the farm hives are safer and sturdier. I don't know how a busy Discord server's worth of bugs that only have one brain cell each would logically conclude that the humans protect them from outside threats, illness and parasites, but if I understood right, the bees would be free to move away and build a new nest somewhere else any time they'd want, and they simply choose not to.
You know how in almost every culture, people have some concept of "if I sacrifice something that I made/grew/produced to the Gods, they will ward me and my harvest from evil"?
So, in a way, don't the bees willingly sacrifice a part of their harvest to an entity not only far greater than them, but nearly beyond their comprehension, in exchange for protection against natural forces wildly outside of their own control?
So tell me, beekeepers, what are you to your bees, if not a mildly eldritch God?
I don’t know about other cultures, but in English folklore, when a beekeeper dies someone has to go out and tell the bees.
Imagine you’re a neolithic hunter-gatherer, just hanging out, sacrificing stuff to your god, when a new god you’ve never met before shows up and tells you that your god is dead, it’s not your fault or anything, and maybe a new god will come along to take care of you, maybe not, it’s gonna be touch and go for a while
Apparently in medieval Europe they also whispered secrets to the bees.
So imagine the mildly eldritch God you worship talks to you and tells you secrets, but these secrets make no sense to you and are incomprehensible to understand or even know they are secrets. But your God does make vibrations at you, so thats probably a good thing right??
Also occasionally the Swarm decides there is not enough room in the Hive because the eldritch god didn't take the offering of Honey at their normal time. So enough of a Swarm builds up that the second queen is able to leave without decimating the first Swarm. They are all set to search out a new place that will likely not have your God anymore (but really that's not too much of a struggle, they have abandoned you, that's part of why you've left, even though the first Swarm still holds out hope for their return).
And then, the scouts find another Hive right next to the old Hive. Literally right next to it. So the Queen lands to inspect it and wow, it's a good deal. The area already has enough food to support 2 Hives, so it's a not problem to stay in the area now that they have the space, but...this wasn't here before.
And then you see God, they've come to help the Swarm move to the new Hive and take the offering from the old Hive. Truly this must have been their plan all along
In English folklore, you ALSO have to invite your bees to your wedding, and decorate their hive, and leave a slice of cake for them, and also bring your new spouse by to introduce them to the hive straightaway. Imagine your eldritch god doing THAT.
if only all gods were so well-mannered

The American Ballet Theatre is debuting its first same-sex pas de deux tonight, performed by Calvin Royal III and João Menegussi. A snippet of the performance has been circulating on TikTok (above), and it’s so beautiful, I was moved to tears. I tried to capture the tenderness of these thirty seconds in charcoal and pencil as best as I could. (Below.)
they just want you to go with them 🥺
I just wanna remind everyone that Amazon's commercials are 100% propaganda. Sure, they have benefits and maternity leave. Sure, they get a minimum of 15$ an hour now. But.
But do you know how much of Amazon's warehouse workers are actually Amazon employees? Only about 60%. And that's not during the holiday season, when the number of contractors is exponentially higher.
I've worked in a distribution center. For every 30 pickers or packers, there is at least one manger. Those managers are all Amazon employees, meaning the remainder there is gonna be mostly contractors. Again, this is especially true around the holidays. When I worked there in 2017, the contractors had a three strikes rule. Call out for a shift more than three days (not consecutive, just three days any time at all) and you're fired. You have the flu? Fired. You lost your childcare? Fired. You have no transportation to work? Fired.
A truly horrifying number of warehouse employees were living out of their cars, sleeping at the truck stop across the road. A fellow EMT on duty was so incompetent that he gave a hyperglycemic man a candy bar and made him so sick he could have died. They will require their managers to 40 hours a week (over a 3-4 day period), but the second you cross into overtime territory you're made to leave the building or else. A manager once left in the middle of an active medical emergency because she was going to hit double overtime if she didn't, and she didn't want to lose her job.
Amazon is not an ethical company. They do not treat the vast majority of their employees well, not even their managers. I was an EMT on call in a distribution center and every morning a manager came in with steroid cream he needed put on his head because he was losing his hair from the stress. He wasn't even 30 yet. They do not give reasonable accommodation for disabled persons. They do not allow adequate rest times. They make every single employee clock out before they go through security upon leaving, which can take up to 20 minutes because everyone leaves at once. A Supreme Court justice literally decided that was legal--to hold employees in the building on time they aren't being paid.
Amazon is fucking bullshit. The price gouging alone should be enough to not shop with them whenever possible, but their treatment of warehouse employees is despicable. They treat the backbone of the company like worthless, replaceable drones. Fuck Amazon, fuck Bezos, eat the fucking rich.

as a person who grew up in a very white community i never saw wearing braids or my natural hair as an option until i started seeing other people who looked and talked like me rocking their natural hair or their braids and I have been natural ever since. Representation matters.
I would love to see the anti immigration conservatives do this for at least 30 mins..
Donate: We can’t do Thanksgiving without farm workers
Friendly reminder that most farm workers are paid nearly nothing via loopholes (don’t have to follow minimum wage if you arent paying by the hour!)
And that “unskilled labor” isn’t an actual thing. It’s just used by desk jockeys who play on the internet all day instead of working so they feel superior to everyone who actually does the work they profit off of. And of course, to make themselves feel better for the abuse they dish out.
HERE IS A FARM WORKER COVID RELIEF FUND

I’ve already reblogged this, but I’m doing it again because I just passed a foodie blog that claimed quinoa was a sustainable crop because it’s always available in the Fresh Thyme bulk section. Hipster vegans’ brains have been replaced by parcooked oatmeal so the more visibility this post gets the better.
its not that you dont have to pay minimum wage if youre not paying by the hour because paying by the piece is also otherwise illegal, but farmworkers are specifically excluded from most workers rights laws including the minimum wage laws because of racism.
When the laws were written in the early to mid 20th century, in order for northerm democrats to convince southerners to agree to laws benefitting workers, they specifically excluded farm workers and domestic workers bc those fields were predominantly Black and the south was not going to allow their recently freed slaves to have more labor protections

Hey, Americans! Support fast food workers, don’t cross the picket line. No fast food on Feb 16.
Join in and help the #BlueWave wipe out the GOP.
We can’t do anything if Republicans still control the Senate and block everything, and the States could use some help too!
And don’t forget governor’s races!
municipal races are important too
