“Capture isn’t an option, Charles.”

“Then, we’ll run.”

Max blinks at Charles’, face pinching. “We?” He shakes his head incredulously. “This isn’t your fight.”

A sickening realization overtakes Charles, and he pulls his hands back as if stung. “You want your ship to be hit by lightning… but that’s something only a madman would want!”

The corner of Max’s mouth lifts with something maniacal yet profoundly confident. “It’s like you said, yes? I have learned a whole new way to fly.”

“This…” He busses his lips reverentially against Charles’ fingers. “Here and right now - this is all that we have.” 

“That doesn’t sound like a man who believes we each make our own luck.” 

An abrupt silence fills the cabin as the chanting chorus and drum beat ends. Even though Charles' time on Max’s ship has been dominated by silence, it now falls with an eerie disquiet. Max lowers their intertwined hands, sighing softly. “Well, I’m not stupid enough to pit my luck against cosmic forces.”

Max’s eyes roam across his face, rippling tendrils of heat across Charles’ skin. “You’re still intelligent and capable… and that makes you dangerous.”

A hum of approval sounds in Charles’ throat before he can stop it, and he steps close into Max’s personal space. The Dutchman’s scent wraps around him, and Charles wishes he had a way to wear it on his own skin. “But I think that you like that, non?” His voice drops to a low register as his gaze lingers on Max’s lush lips. “The thrill of anticipation… for what I could do. For what you know that I can do.”

Max’s hand comes to the back of Charles’ head, fingers threading through his curls before tightening. He pulls Charles’ head back to a steep angle, bordering on discomfort as the full expanse of Charles’ throat sits bared to Max’s mercy. “If you think that you can make me lose control at the expense of my ship and crew,” Max’s words hold a dark, alluring edge as his nose skims down Charles’ throat. “Think again.”

Max tilts his head, exposing a swath of untouched lather still along his neck. “Your revenge mission against me doesn’t include killing me?” 

Exhaling a deep sigh, Charles steadies his hand and moves the razor over Max’s skin. The blade glides cleanly across the lather to expose the bare skin beneath. “Priority order to secure capture. Not destroy.” 

“So it’s prison, then.” Max’s words deform as Charles tilts his head further to reach the last patches of lather. “Though, honestly, I’m not sure that there’s much difference.” 

“A life in prison is still a life.”
