no you're so right! men are capable of writing women well, just like white people are capable of writing people of color well. so long as they actually put effort into it, do research, and don't resort to tired stereotypes. obviously, representation does improve when more voices are considered, which is why it's a good thing to diversify writers' rooms and desegregate the entertainment industry (that and obviously women and people of color deserve to have as much access to opportunities in the arts as white men do). but insisting that people are only capable of writing characters whose identities and lived experiences match their own is not only extremely essentialist and limiting, like you're saying, it just gives people an excuse not to even try.

There’s a book I’ve been struggling to read for a year and a half. Seriously, it’s been like 5 pages a week for 18 months, if that. There’s a reason I haven’t just given up on it but I won’t get into that.

There’s many reasons I’m having trouble engaging with it but there’s a subtle one I only just put my finger on. There’s nothing described that couldn’t be experienced via television. No smells, tastes or touch. Some, but not very revelatory interior thoughts/feelings of the characters. A lot of characters immediately vocalize or do some other outward expression of their thoughts and feelings.

I don’t feel like I’m reading a book. I feel like I’m reading a description of a TV show.

Anyway, mediums matter.

A common sentiment I see on Tumblr, Reddit, and other places, is trans guys being afraid to be themselves for fear of backlash. Now I'm not talking "If I go on T, my parents are gonna kick me out", as that's a legitimate concern.

No, this is stuff like "I go by they/them even though I wanna go by he/him because I don't want to be seen as a threat", "My bf won't let me go on T so I'm not gonna", "my partner won't let me top so I bottom", stuff like that.

Guys. Part of being a man, and an adult in general, is not giving a fuck what people say. Now there's limits to this, obviously don't be an asshole, be kind, be caring. But at *least* have the guts to say "Fuck you. No. Accept me as I am, or fucking leave my presence". Like, seriously. Do NOT let people walk all over you and determine how you live your life. Why the fuck are you letting people control you so much? Learn to either tell them to fuck off, or leave.

What's the worst they're gonna do? Leave you? Now you've got a toxic asshole out of your life and you can be yourself, win win. They gonna call you a name? Insult them back.

They're not you. They don't need to live as you. They don't have your best interests and mind and they sure as shit don't care about you if they act like this. So why the FUCK do you put so much stock in them? Fuck them. Seriously. Tell them to go fuck themselves.

Just because they're willing to fuck you does not mean they care about you. It just means they see you as a piece of meat that they can use and discard once your purpose has been served.

At least the transfems and trans women on this site and online have the guts to be themselves despite the push-back they often face. You guys could learn a thing or two from them.

anyway. once more. if you are hungry all the time no matter how much you eat, that is indicative of a medical problem and you need to tell a doctor and do whatever you need to get tested for celiac. probably also other things, there are other possible causes, celiac is just the one i'm intimately familiar with. but it's not a personal failing. you deserve to know what's happening in your body. you deserve to feel full.

So yeah, if you are experiencing something like this, is is a common symptom of a fair number of serious conditions, many of which are treatable and more easily treatable the sooner they're detected.

There are also plenty of other conditions, medications, and environmental factors that can affect your appetite (stimulating or suppressing), even if it doesn't feel "extreme or insatiable". I have a condition exacerbated by some of my medications that means I'm nauseous fairly often, and while addressing/alleviating the root problem is ongoing, I have a prescribed medication that helps relieve nausea that is relatively safe for routine use (with some side effects).[4]

All of which is to say, in OP's words "It's not a personal failing. You deserve to know what's happening in your body. You deserve to feel full."
