We were driving to a restaurant and wanted to see how long the wait was. My dad handed me the phone book and asked me to look up the number. I, for whatever reason, thought he said “get rid of this”. So I opened the window and chucked the phone book while we were going 70 MPH down the highway.

Sometimes… I write sad/angsty things. And I like it. Then y'all say fix it.

And I don’t like it anymore because everyone gets mad at me for writing it.

I know that most people mean it sort of jokingly when they say to “fix it”, but it creates this dialogue about the concept of brokenness in writing. As if happy endings and full resolution are the only way for a story to avoid “brokenness”. Writing about broken people and broken situations does not mean that the writing itself is broken. Sometimes it’s a statement in and of itself, and I hope that there is a community of mutual respect between writers and readers to give room for angst without a happy ending. Room for that to exist and be acknowledged as an intentional, artistic choice with significance and meaning.

And if I may add further… if you are also a writer, please don’t feed into this by reblogging someone’s ficlet with you continuing that ficlet and claiming “I fixed it” because you add a happy ending–at least not without asking first. You have not fixed anything; you have only changed the perception of another writer’s ending to better suit your own personal preference. And if you have permission to do that? Then no worries! You’re all good to add on (except maybe still leave off the whole “Fixed It” comment). And if the author isn’t comfy with that, we should respect that too.

It’s more than okay to wish for happy endings. I tend to prefer writing and reading them myself. But it’s not okay to claim that anything other than a happy ending in a story needs to be “fixed”.

I might not of used the term "fix it" before but i can definitely remember leaving comments like "why'd it have to be SAD" and yeah you're right that's not cool. Important information for readers out there <3
