LADS & the new 3D otome game(s)
I'm reposting this because people in this fandom need to think reasonably and not be so easily triggered every time news like this comes out.
Probably an unpopular opinion but I'm excited for the new 3D otome game & will be giving it a try, even if it sucks. Now that we all got a whiff of this new game. It's ridiculous to me that the game hasn't even come out yet and already received tons of hate. Please understand that in doing this, you as the player and active consumer are sabotaging yourself. Let me explain.
1-REPLICAS ARE INEVITABLE
Infold revolutionized the world of otome games with LADS and I'm constantly amazed by how high quality this game is. Not only did LADS bring about so many firsts, it set such high standards that their peers will have to run at x2 speed to catch up.
This kind of success ALWAYS bring about imitators. Now that LADS has proved appealing to women can be just as profitable, everyone and their mother want a piece of the pie aka your wallet. This day was coming whether we like it or not. I, and I believe many other players, actually welcome it.
It's obvious that the visuals of this new game are strikingly similar to LADS, some might even call it a ripoff. I don't argue with that, I have working eyes too. They're following a formula that's proven to be effective.
Should they have been more creative specifically in terms of visuals? Yes, maybe, but it would be a HIGH RISK to introduce something brand new that again has zero proof would be successful. Remember when BlackPink succeeded with the girl crush concept and every company started introducing their own girl-crush girl group? This is no different.
2-COMPETITION IS NECESSARY IN EVERY INDUSTRY
Me wanting competition for LADS does not mean I hate the game or the company behind it. I don't form personal attachments to business entities. Besides, I haven't gone through my LADS burnout phase yet, still a honeymooner :), so I don't wish for its downfall or anything like that. I welcome competition because it's necessary for market health & balance. Did we forget all this talk about how monopoly is bad?
A monopoly benefits companies, not consumers, which is what we are - consumers. When a business entity becomes too big to fail, with no equivalent competitors, it has less incentives to listen to customer feedback because what other choices do you have? In this case, you lose leverage as a consumer and the business cannot be held accountable.
3. NEWCOMERS MIGHT FAIL & THAT'S OKAY
Let's face it, as of now, I doubt any new otome releases can come close to LADS. Personally, I don't have high hopes but I wouldn't mind if the new games suck. If they do suck, we as consumers should give criticism because that leads to improvement and innovation.
The LADS today that we know and love is not the first version. It built upon its predecessors. That's what these new games are doing. I'm not saying you should accept low quality products & services, btw. I'm saying newcomers should be allowed the space to test & fail before getting dragged. If we want healthy competition, we have to allow competitors to grow.
4-THE EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT
This is my own perception but I think this hate isn't about the actual new game which hasn't even come out yet. Could it be about the players' personal attachment to the LIs & LADS itself?
Again, I'm not saying you can't have your opinions and you have to like this new game right away. But the visceral reactions & hate, getting all worked up and for what? If anything, you're giving this new game (that you supposedly hate) so much attention and buzz. Let's not forget, no publicity is bad publicity.
Your feelings are valid and I'm not shaming. It's human. You probably have identified yourself with the game & the LIs, so the thought of imitators instantly triggers your protective instinct. Though, it's important to be aware of where you're coming from & not let it cloud your better judgment.
I'm not telling you how to feel about this new game or any other games that will be following in LADS footsteps, trying to replicate its success. Personally, I find it hard to see myself forming such deep connections with other characters the way I did with my LADS mains. But I am saying that we as active consumers should at least give newcomers a chance.
You don't have to like it, you don't have to play it, but don't snuff out any potential seed of innovation before it even has a chance to sprout. If we want good quality products & services, the feedback environment has to allow them to evolve.
