"should we tell authors on ao3 when we have discord conversations about their fics" i don't speak for everyone here but if y'all ever find a group chat discussing my fics you can should must and WILL send me screenshots of the whole damn thing. inflate my ego. gimme
Ooooh, yes PLEASE, I want to know my fics are living rent free in someone else's head as much as they're freeloading in mine!
Some of the categories for the NYT Connections fills me with hatred and wrath. What do you mean “dog breeds with the first letter changed” i’ll kill you
Fury. Rage. Flames on the side of my face.
These are not categories. These are the creator being imaginatively unimaginative. I will not accept "Starts of European Countries" as a category. I WOULD accept "Nicknames of European Countries" as a category. There is a difference, and it is important.
im completely addicted to Open Link in New Tab
if Open Link in New Tab is wrong then baby i dont want to be right
Middle mouse click, baby. Once you start, you can't stop.
ppl are so annoying “you can’t paint ur bedroom pink you’re an adult” i did not spend my entire life waiting to grow up and control my life to paint my bedroom beige
I had a sales woman in furniture store try and tell me not to buy a hot bubblegum pink loveseat because she wanted me to “think about the future”
Bitch, I am thinking about the future. I already got a hot bubblegum pink couch at home and now I need a loveseat to go with it.
when I first bought my house, I announced my decision to paint my bedroom purple. I had wanted a purple bedroom for thirty damn years, you fucking bet I was gonna have one now. My friends decided, for some reason, that I meant what one of them referred to as “14 year old girl purple” (through what’s wrong with the colors a 14 year old girl chooses, I don’t know, even if they’re not what I want as an adult). They didn’t believe me until they saw the color on the actual wall, even thought they helped me pick out paints. My mother, meanwhile, decided to get worried that if I painted my bedroom a “dark purple”, it would be “depressing”. As if, with an entire house to live in, I would spend all my time in the bedroom, which I wanted to be dark because I would be sleeping in there. In the damn dark.
I had like one, maybe two friends who were all like FUCK YEAH YOU PAINT IT WHATEVER COLOR YOU WANT, PURPLE BEDROOMS ARE AWESOME.
But when they actualy saw the finished bedroom, every single one of them was like, “Oh yeah, that’s really pretty.” (Well, the ones who supported me from the beginning were more like WOOHOO.)
And the moral of the story is: Fuck ‘em, please yourself. Either they’ll come around, or you can safely ignore every question of taste they opine about for the rest of time.
This applies to other adulting activities, too. When I was a kid, I decided that I wanted to have a wedding cake made of doughnuts. When I got older, I figured that I would be “mature” about it and get a traditional cake, which the older adults approved of. Now that I’m 25 and facing the possibility of actual marriage in the near future, I’m just like “marriage is a social construct but it comes with tax & insurance benefits, so just give me that goddamn doughnut cake.” If they don’t like it then they don’t have to come to my wedding.

I would like you all to view my office. I’m thirty and my rainbow room is awesome, people can fight me
I’m thirty and my first big furniture purchase was a custom coffin shaped coffee table that opens up and is lined with purple crushed velvet. I would have loved it at 13 and I love it now. Growing up doesn’t mean you have to abandon what makes you happy.
GROWING UP DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO ABANDON WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
I have told this story before, and I will tell it again, because I am An Old now and repeating stories forever is our prerogative:
When I bought my house, the kitchen was multiple shades of dingy white. It was dismal, but it was now mine! So went to the hardware store for paint (well, several trips, painted swatches on panel, etc — I’m very picky. But this was the final, ‘real’ trip). It was a busy day in the paint section. There were at least five people behind me in line.
Now, remember, latex paint is slightly lighter and brighter when wet than it is when dry. And I’d decided to paint my kitchen candy-apple red. The hardware store employee took my gallon off the Paint Jiggler and cracked it open to put a dab on the top, revealing the most incredibly deep pink, and behind me I hear the entire line of people say,
“Oh my god.”
…in perfect chorus.
I did not realize up until that moment that shocking a crowd of strangers with my paint color choices was a life goal, but at that moment I felt an absolutely overwhelming sense of achievement.
This is the door to my garage. It used to be white. Live your best life.
Mischief the cat says “Who goes there?”
Every visiting friend says “This is so cool.”
If you’re looking for an excuse to do some decorating that will make your soul sing, this entire thread is your sign to do it and don’t look back!

I’m 35. I have been told my place looks like maybe a LP fan lives there.
Not sure what they mean.
When I first moved into my place, I painted the spare room, that eventually became my office, lime green, the kind of lime green that glows down the corridor when I open the door - The colour was only available as an “accent colour” in the section of paints intended for children’s playrooms, and in the shop I got a lot of “Oh your son will love this!” And from people I knew I got a lot of “Oh well, you’re 21 now, you’re basically a teenager, this is a terrible idea, you’ll hate it and need to pull out all the furniture to repaint it.” And I have to report that I am now in my forties and my office still looks like this, and it makes me smile every time I see it.
this is such a modern idea, too
not decorating trends; those have always existed. but the idea that color and decoration is inherently childish
this is the dining room at the Eustis Estate in Milton, Massachusetts, from 1878 (where I used to work, briefly). the walls are TEXTURED MICA SHIMMER on a green background. Adult Space For Adults!
A jewelry shop in Paris c. 1901. kids can’t buy jewelry!
who can forget the classic 1950s colorful bathroom? I’m not a huge fan, but still! adult space! bright colors; decorative designs!
meanwhile “you’re immature if you like Art Nouveau” is a hot take I’ve really, seriously seen on this webbed site (only once, thank the gods). I don’t know who started this, but I’m going to kill them
I think a lot of it stems from the ubiquitous Waterhouse prints that were sold on college campuses for 20 years. like why would I get a free pass if it were Monet instead Western culture is stupid. The entire point of being an adult is breakfast for dinner and cake for breakfast and dying with the most toys.
instantly decided to reblog when i got to GROWING UP DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO ABANDON WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.
The examples of decorated homes above are both either modern or upper class, which makes it easy to dismiss because “sure the rich people have beautiful homes” and “sure, modern middle-class people have lots of color in their homes.”
So here’s two examples of traditional Norwegian farmhouse interiors. You know. The kinds of places peasants live in.
This type of painting is called “rosemaling” and today you usually find it on, like, carved wooden bowls and such that are only used for decoration. But back two centuries ago, it was very common to find the interiors of homes covered in it, in projects that were painted little by little over the decades. Because it’s beautiful to look at, paint is the cheapest way of decorating your house, and what else are you going to do on the long winter nights when it’s too dark and cold to work outdoors?
But mostly, they did it because it made them happy, and it was beautiful.
Those old peasants were on to something, I think.
I painted rooms in my house these colors and some people had doubts:
I have been SO HAPPY.
My wife painted the walls of my studio ORANGE. Glorious sunset orange.
I have always wanted a room that was an amazing color and this one is mine.
My entire house is decorated in highly saturated jewel tones. My living room is a vibrant teal. My dining room/kitchen is a beautiful true indigo, with the hallway being just a hair more blue. My office is a deep, dark magenta. My bathroom is royal purple. All of these rooms use the colors from the other rooms as accents. They are all beautifully cohesive. The one thing I did in deference to "adulthood" that I'm really grateful I did was not make any* room one solid color. Instead, they all** have at least one full wall in the color and two of the other walls are half colored and half just slightly off-white. In my living room, for example, the wall with the couch is teal. The wall with the 10-foot bow window is white with matching teal curtains. The two side walls have a diagonal line cutting through where the teal meets the white.
* The back cat room is all green. It has no white and it is not the right green for my jewel tones. I hate it and avoid going in it at all costs except to scoop the poop from the litter boxes. Someday, I'll repaint it, when I can find the right green.
** The bathroom does not have any solid wall. Instead, the CEILING is purple, and the purple drips down from it in mottled splodges that focus on the corners. This blew my nephew's mind.
The entire time I was picking out colors, my mom kept fretting and trying to guide me toward at least slightly more muted tones. I dug my heels in. MY house, MY colors. This teal is perfect. I don't want her teal with the slight grey undertones...
She helped me paint, worrying the whole time about how noisy it was going to be.
About a month after we were done, she told me that she LOVED coming to my house and just sitting in it. It was so harmonious and bright and happy. She told me that she should have trusted me from the start.
I love sitting in my house too. It is absolutely harmonious, bright, and happy, and I get to be reminded of that every time I come home and see my teal door welcoming me in.
(My bedroom is all-white. That's so my bright purple blackout curtains and beautifully colored bedspread pop, and I can change those more easily than I can repaint all the walls)
Superhero team as a metaphor for online friendship
I've known you for years, but don't know your name. I trust you with my biggest fears, but you'll never even know how I look. I wish I could take you to my favourite coffee shop or park, but I'll never be able. If something were to happen to you I would never know. You are one of most important people in my life, I wish I could introduce you to others
Write that one-shot. Those 3 chapters will be the best 10 chapters you ever wrote
No, no, and NO.
AO3 does not live in “the cloud” because that is other people’s computers, and other people’s computers are vulnerable to censorship.
AO3 is on its own computers. It does still have to be housed somewhere, and I suppose a determined enough hater could try to find that place and go after it, but it’s a lot harder than sending spurious complaints to Amazon or whomever going “BadWrong things are hosted on your cloud service!”
Owning the servers is a core tenet of OTW/AO3.
Warming up a new database server….
When people involved with AO3 talk about “the cost of servers” they don’t mean “the cost to pay Amazon for space on their servers.” They mean, like, the cost to physically own them, and eventually replace them with new ones. And the operating costs to run them.
AO3 is not “in the cloud.” AO3 is stored on physical machines that the OTW owns.
While this is not a solution that can work for everyone who wants to deal with controversial content, it is why AO3ple sneer at alt-righters who complain about getting thrown off hosting platforms.
I Want Us to Own the Goddamned Servers
Because I want us to own the goddamned servers, ok? Because I want a place where we can’t be TOSed and where no one can turn the lights off or try to dictate to us what kind of stories we can tell each other.
AO3 is what a website looks like when you seize the means of production.
Please note that buying new servers and storage just became a shit load more expensive.
Because AI.
To paraphrase a comment on a Gamers Nexus video, the reason computer parts are getting so expensive is that a huge amount of RAM and storage that have not been produced yet were purchased with non-existent money to put in gpus and computers that have also not yet been produced to put in data centers that have not yet been built, to be powered by infrastructure that may never appear, to satisfy demand that does not actually exist, to obtain profit that is mathematically impossible.
So that’s fun. But it means that already owning computers that actually do the thing is SO MUCH BETTER than hiring other people to build more capacity to buy more computers to do the thing.
How bad is the RAM crisis? The price of ddr3, which is like 10-15yo tech, is going up. The price of DDR5 is now stupid expensive, 4+ times as expensive as it was a few months ago.
Mostly because there’s only one company in the world that is capable of generating the kind of chips needed and everyone uses that company because the modern world is a very precarious house of cards held together by tissue and string and we have a 50 foot toddler playing Godzilla with international trade.
Anyway AO3 is a goddamn miracle people need to respect.
I think this is especially worth pointing out now because if they start fundraising more then this is most probably why they need money. If anyone’s mad that AO3 needs extra dollars then, remember to blame AI.
The small voice in your head that says: "I don't need to write down every small detail of this plot idea, I love it so much, I'll remember this."
That's the devil speaking.
sometimes weird bugs bite you and you gotta just go with it, you know? And that's why I wrote a 75,000 word Trolls fic and now get to clean it up to publish it, and I'm just wondering how the people who follow my AO3 account for Marauders or Hellaverse stuff is gonna take this...
my toxic writing trait is imagining the scene in my head in long, full cinematic detail and then writing: “they fought. it was intense.”
the reality of being a writer
Especially the last one!
as a writer, it’s very important that you know this: whenever you tell yourself “this will only be one-chapter-long” that is a lie. your brain is lying to you. it won’t, in fact, be just a short one-shot
DYMM Typesets
Did You Miss Me? is an absolute beast of a fic to even think about book-binding, but luckily for all its fans... one of its authors kinda sorta maybe does typesetting as a part of her day job.
I was always going to get around to this, but the new Are You There? @krethes wrote kicked my butt into gear, so here you go! A Google Drive link to a folder with two different PDF typesets of DYMM? and a Word document version of the same, all free for your use!
The two typesets differ in formatting only. One of them has smaller font sizes and reduced color to hopefully save you from killing your printer or your budget the way I did. If you can print 8.5x11" documents double-sided, you can just open the PDFs and print them straight as they are, double-sided flipped on the short edge, to get them already arranged in signatures of 16 pages, or 8 sheets of double-sided paper. If you want to try your hand at making changes, you can use the Word docs, however, you MUST use Word. Google Docs is simply not powerful enough for the styles I had to create to get even this close to the chat bubbles.
There are instructions included in the Google Drive folder. Go wild. Have fun. Mind your budgets. DYMM? is still an utter beast, but I hope these typesets can at least remove the most daunting aspect of the project!
Hello! Im new to this app so idk how it works lmao BUT! I adore DYMM? so much and ive just recently got into book binding. My friend said that you have already made typesets for them? Im still new to the book binding world and typesetting texts (with color no less!) seems like its gonna kill me🤣😅
I was wondering if:
1. If you were ok with me book binding it
2. If you actually did make the typesets
3. If youre comfy with sharing the (supposed) typesets with me so that I can hand bind them🥰 I wanted to use colored thread for each character like the texts and make it all cute and rainbow
If not, thats completely fine and I wont bind them i promise. I just really love that fic and id love to hold it in my hands like a real book.
<3
Hello! I got into book binding myself specifically to have a copy of DYMM I can hold in my hands like a real book! I DO have typesets for them... but I warn you now, they are full color and can be VERY expensive to print. All in all, they ended up being 8 volumes of ~400 pages each, and that’s not counting the pages I had to reprint because I wasn’t satisfied with the print quality.
I always planned on sharing the typesets, but I haven’t decided on the best formats. I do have some less-color formats, but I don’t have any full typesets of that format yet.
If you’re able to access the DYMM discord, there are some pictures of the finished set there. In the meantime, I’ll look into the formatting options I can knock out quickly.
Ok DYMM question that I ponder every time I reread it. How the fuck does Lily make evil tea? What does she DO to it? It's not that difficult to make a decent cup what is her secret?????
Ah yes, the most pressing question of the series 🤣🤣🤣
Truly...it's a mystery. She's brilliant, right, like big brain, boss babe, and yet... Mostly it's there to humanize her, but realistically she's steeping it too long, too hot, and all that tannic acid is making it gross. The grittiness is an aggressive squeezing of the teabag to "not waste anything".
At this point, she's a little too proud to admit she's wrong about THIS, even though deep down she's maybe a little aware 👀 But Remus gives her such crap, she's not going to just let him win 🤣. Good thing James can make a good cuppa. 😌
Audience
(This takes place in the universe of Did You Miss Me? by @krethes and @fantismal )
The rest of the audience filtered in around Remus as he settled into his seat. Some of them were talking excitedly about "Sisi's comeback", something Alice and the rest of the team had tried to squash as much as possible.
Lights flashed, then went down completely and Sirius walked into the mostly bare stage with his guitar. Thunderous applause broke out as soon as he was visible and he took a minute to smile and wave before sitting down on the stool and adjusting the mic before launching into his first song.
Remus was immediately caught up in Sirius's otherworldly beauty and voice as he sang one of the first songs he'd written on his own. It wasn't always easy to share his boyfriend with the world, but he was also so proud of him and wanted everyone to see how far he'd come.
The song finished and Sirius spoke into the mic. "Thank you. I'm so happy all of you could be here tonight. This next one goes out to someone special. It's called Walking in the Moonlight."
@wolfstarmicrofic
I don't think I ever told anyone, not even Krethes, but this is exactly how Sirius would want to come back to public performing. Just him and a guitar and his own music. And it would all be sung to Remus (and James), who never missed a show.
