ST 5 after thought.
I remember telling myself I’d accept whatever came in the final episodes. Now that I’ve watched them, the whole experience feels bittersweet. Will I ever rewatch the show? Probably not. I know many people will... it will still give them the comfort they were looking for. And that’s okay. But this show no longer gives me comfort. I’m not angry. I think I accepted everything the moment the credits started rolling. I’m not sad because my years of hopes and theories didn’t come true. It's because I feel so unbelievably foolish for ever believing they might. For ever letting myself hope. And yet, there was a time when I’d wait for any tiny bit of news about the show. A time when it brought me so much peace. I still love it. How could I not? In those early years, it gave me so much joy. But now… I don’t know if I can ever watch it again. Not for a very long time. Not without reliving everything I’m feeling today. I am sad. So very sad. And honestly, I don’t even know the right word for what I’m feeling. Maybe it’s because I don't have great vocabulary. Or maybe there just isn’t a single word that can fully explain what I feel. Where did I go wrong? And why do I feel this bad over a show? I don’t know. People warned me, but I kept hoping anyway. If I feel this empty, I can’t stop thinking about how others must feel... especially the queer audience. Are they feeling as let down as I am? Or is it even worse? I knew the taunts would come the moment we watched the penultimate episode but actually seeing it unfold still stings. And should I think this is a win? The fact that El survives, The Party survives, Steve survives, all the main characters make it through? When I think about it, it could have been so much worse. But even with that relief, I still can’t help feeling sad. Either way, I’ll remember this moment... this heaviness, this disappointment, this emptiness and this realization. I don’t think I’ll ever place this much hope in a mainstream show again. And this isn’t bitterness talking. It’s just the truth. I feel stupid for believing. So very, painfully stupid.
Honestly… I’m terrified to hope. But a part of me still wants to trust the process. I mean, after everything we’ve seen, how can I not? There are so many things that feel unfinished, so many loose ends. First: The Painting. It wasn’t just a prop or a cute moment. It meant something. It carried emotional weight. And now it feels like it’s been left behind when it deserved follow through. Are we really never coming back to it? Second: The Birthday Gate / Memory Loss Theory. I know people joke about it, or brush it aside, but I’m still stuck in that restaurant trying to make sense of what happened, what it hinted at, and why it was handled that way. Third: Michael Wheeler. If I’ve been wrong this entire time, then someone, please, explain his behavior over five seasons. I’m not blaming him. I’m not dragging him. I just… want to understand. Because he has made choices, said things, avoided things, reacted in ways that don’t make sense unless there’s something deeper going on. Fourth: Mileven. I don’t see them as endgame. And honestly, I wish the show would make things clearer instead of leaving us in limbo. They haven’t felt like a couple for a long time. They are more like friends than lovers. For me, they stopped fitting together back in Season 3. And that’s my personal opinion, with absolutely no hate toward anyone who feels differently. Fifth: All the subtle cues such as Mike's Funko Pop holding the painting, the color-coded dolls and the drawing where they are in a sailing boat with the rainbow background, the directional choices... People can dismiss them as “nothing.” But for those who know what these things symbolize, for those who pick up on the language of visual storytelling, they were there. Clear and Deliberate.
And that’s why it hurts. It's not the sarcasm, I can handle those jokes. What hurts is the refusal to even acknowledge the possibility, the way some people shut it down like we’re imagining things out of thin air. We’re not. We’re responding to what the show has given us. And then there’s the coming-out scene. I cried watching it. I rarely do. But even I can admit that it felt rushed. It was emotional because it was delivered well but... when queer fans themselves are saying the scene didn’t sit well with them… that says something. If a queer character’s emotional arc isn’t connecting with the queer community, isn’t that a sign that something is missing in the writing? Something wasn’t communicated with the care or depth it deserved. So when fans say that if Byler doesn’t end up canon after all this, it would feel like queerbaiting, they’re not being dramatic or unreasonable. They’re speaking from experience, from what they've seen, from how the story has been framed. The bait is there. The setup is there. That’s not delusion. That’s evidence. I’ve never posted something like this before. Usually, I watch, analyze, enjoy, and keep my thoughts to myself because I assume my voice won’t matter in a huge crowd. But these past months, more people have begun speaking up, and there’s something comforting about that. It feels like we’re not alone in how we see things.
And that’s why I don’t understand the hostility. Why be mean to people who are just trying to make sense of a story they care about? Why attack someone for having an interpretation, for noticing things, for hoping? We’re not hurting anyone. We’re just trying to understand a show that means a lot to us... maybe more than it should and expressing the parts that confuse us, excite us, and scare us. In the end, we just want our feelings to be seen and our interpretations to be treated with respect. All we’re asking for is honesty from the story we’ve invested our hearts in.
MIKE WHEELER and WILL BYERS in STRANGER THINGS 5, EPISODE 5: SHOCK JOCK
Hey there…
I just watched Volume 2. Hopefully you have too, because I am here to rant. Again.
If I’m being honest… I feel really empty right now.
I don’t even know how to articulate it. I’m not saying I’ve given up on Byler becoming canon. Not at all. But for the first time in my life (which is a pretty long life!), I feel genuinely gutted because I’ve been so emotionally invested in fictional characters.
Let me address the elephant in the room: the coming out scene. I cried. And I don’t cry easily at shows. A few days ago I was trying to remember the last time something on screen made me cry, and I honestly couldn’t. I know it must’ve happened, but I just don’t remember.
I understand why some people didn’t like the scene or how it was handled. The room was definitely a bit too crowded for my liking. Family and friends I can understand, but Mr. Clarke, Murray, Vickie… that felt like a stretch. But even then, none of that mattered, because all I saw was Will. Everyone else disappeared for me. On a rewatch I thought Dustin looked towards Mike when Will talked about his crush. I was probably overthinking. And yes, when he said the person he had a “crush” on was his “Tammy”… my heart actually broke. Because there is no universe where that feels true. It felt more like... well.. ripping off the band-aid? He probably thinks that anyway. There are still so many unresolved things in the show. Or at least that’s what I thought until the coming out happened. But one specific thing still haunts me: the painting. Finn said the payoff would come in Season 5, and we still haven’t gotten Mike’s POV. El still doesn’t know the painting wasn’t for her. She doesn’t know that the “Tammy” Will mentioned is really Mike. So yeah… I feel empty. And as much as I love this show, the wait for the finale, these six days feels impossible. I trust the process, but I also dread the outcome.
But this isn’t Byler doubt. It’s more of a emotional fatigue. Woah... reading this myself, I may really be delusional at this point.
As for the death predictions: I’m genuinely not scared for Eleven anymore. I feel like it’s another fake-out death in the making. If anyone dies, I keep thinking it might be Kali (not because I want that, she’s suffered enough too.) Out of all the characters, she seems the most narratively “killable.” I don’t see the core four kids dying either. Unless they’re feeling especially cruel and decide to kill Will (which I really don’t see happening). Hopper isn’t dying. I don’t see anything happening to Steve or Jancy. I’m slightly worried for Robin and Vickie but honestly… why would they kill them? It wouldn’t make sense.
If I’m brutally honest, the only characters I see dying are military people, Dr. Kay, Vecna (who is way beyond redemption at this point), and maybe Kali. Murray or Mr. Clarke might sacrifice themselves, but killing Mr. Clarke feels pointless.
And honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if no one on the “good side” dies at all. Shouldn’t the story give us hope rather than despair, especially at the end?
Seriously the finale airs on December 31st. Who in their right mind schedules the final episode of such a beloved show on New Year’s Eve… only to end it with tragedy or ambiguity? That date practically screams emotional closure, not heartbreak. Right?
Hi!
First off, thank you for sharing all these very complex personal thoughts and feelings. That sounds like a lot of emotion and exhaustion and overwhelm all at once. 😥
Yes, we watched all of volume 2 last night. My daughter and I talked quite a bit about it afterwards. She is also having many complicated and confusing feelings about what happened and is still working through it all. She read something that described the three kinds of doubt as:
1. Byler doubt - when you doubt the signs and clues we've picked up on and analyzed actually mean anything and are doubting if Byler will happen
2. Byler angst - when you doubt the Duffers will do a decent job giving us a Byler culmination we can all feel hap-satisfied about
3. Byler fear - when you doubt Netflix will allow Byler to be presented as the beautiful queer-empowering story we all know it can be
(I'm paraphrasing here. Sorry, I don't know where she saw it so I can't credit the original creator.)
She's struggling with the Byler angst, which I think is where you are too at this point, and is not sure how she feels about the way it's been handled so far.
Personally, I didn't feel nearly as angsty and overwhelmed this volume as I did after the first one. Not sure why exactly. Maybe I'm just in a better place emotionally this time. Also, I've been writing my own separate story for these characters for so long, that version feels just as real (if not more) to me now as the original, and has already allowed me to experience and explore all the tender, emotional interpersonal scenes my heart desires, with many more planned. (Plus, we watched "Spirited" like, three times in the last two days, and that show just makes my heart happy 🥰 I've got that Christmas morning feeling! 😃) So although I wish we'd been given a whole lot more Byler-as-a-team this season than we've seen so far, I'm okay with it being what it is. And there is still one more movie-length epicsode (apparently, from what they've told us) yet to come.
As far as the coming-out scene... I would have preferred if it was only Joyce and Mike there (I actually clapped when Will said, "I think you need to hear this too" as Mike started walking away), but I didn't mind it being the whole group - it wasn't about them, so it really didn't matter who all the listening faces were. It was about Will finding the courage to expose his hidden self to... really anyone. And this way, they don't need to take the time to show every character (or those who need to know) learning about it separately - it's already handled. (Although it would've been kinda fun for Lucas and Dustin to have their minds blown seeing a Byler kiss.)
On the nitpicky stylistic side, I don't think the list of ways Will is like the others needed to be quite so long (seven points would've been enough, not the twelve or fifteen they listed. I actually started getting bored, thinking - okay, we get the point...) I did think a lot them were really cute though and appreciated the sentiment.
I LOVE how Robin nods to encourage him and how, when Will says, "I mean I do (like girls). Just not like you guys do," the reaction shot focuses on Lucas and Dustin, with Mike slightly blurred and a tiny bit out of frame, like we're meant to be unsure if this applies to him too.
Calling Mike a "crush" or Will's "Tammy" I think is meant to be Will downplaying his feelings for Mike more for his own sake. Sharing his truly deep, lasting feelings would have been more vulnerability than he was ready to show at this point. And it's also a way to help himself let go and move on, because he doesn't think Mike is like him. Which should make it even more poignant and satisfying when Mike reveals that he does feel that way about Will - if they handle it well.🤞
The one thing I REALLY disliked was the last part, when Will basically gave Vecna credit for pushing him into this. It should have been framed as him wanting to fully embrace his true self, expressing all his worries for the future as reasons he's held back for so long rather than just things Vecna showed him as a fear tactic. It could have been an empowering step on his journey to self-acceptance but instead, they presented it as a defensive move against Vecna's threats. Maybe there will be some plot-relevant reason for this in the last episode, but imho, it was a questionable choice and actually took away from the impactfulness and sensitivity of the moment.
I don't know about the deaths. Kali, probably. El, maybe (not sure about that one). Vecna, definitely. Probably no one else from the good side (maybe Murray?) After that scene with Dustin and Steve, I think they're both safe. They're not killing off Dustin and there wouldn't be enough time for him to deal with the trauma of losing Steve in a satisfying way.
I agree, there are many things that really need to be addressed that haven't been yet (the painting lie, how El recognized Will in the photo in S1, who slid the chain on Will's front door when he was hiding from the demogorgon, Lettergate - what was that letter with the "Love ____ " at the end, why did Mike jump off a cliff (!) and what was he thinking in that moment, just Mike's whole POV...) so this final episode has a lot riding on it and I really hope the duffers can do it justice.
It has been amazingly fun being a part of this fandom during these last few years (this is my first!), sharing in everyone's wild ideas, imaginative hopes and predictions, and inspired creations. One of the downsides to this though is, with so much creativity and brainpower working together, playing off each other, we've explored some truly incredible possibilities for this show that may far surpass what we actually get in the end. But I think it's been worth it, getting so much out of what could have been just a few hours' escape into a TV show that's watched and forgotten. Instead, it became a whole culture of support and encouragement which has changed us and our lives for the better, showing us all what we're truly capable of.
💛💚💙
TL;DR: We're awesome and the Duffers have a lot riding on this finale.
(I might make some of these points into smaller posts, because I don't think a lot of people will read all of this.)
Stranger Things Vol. 2 [Spoiler Alert]
That theory about Will creating the tunnels was true.
Another theory about wormholes was right as well. Partly, but yes.
I don’t believe Eleven is dying. No way. I refuse to believe that. At most, I think there’ll be some kind of fake-out scene.
The Jancy scene… personally, I didn’t read it as a breakup. But maybe that’s what it was? Honestly, I’m confused. Edit: Just saw a screenshot posted where Duffers implied it as breakup.
Will’s coming out was beautiful... for the most part. But why was everyone there? I understand immediate family and the core four, but why Murray, Mr. Clarke, or Vickie? Honestly, if it were me, I wouldn’t even have included Steve and Nancy in that scene. Does that make sense?
And then the whole “crush" and "was his Tammy’” thing? I feel like I’ve been sent straight to oblivion. What was that? Wasn’t it just the day before that he was asking Robin, “how do you know the other person wants to date?”
Will the painting ever be discussed? Will El and Mike ever know Will was talking about Mike? Also, the birthday gate?? Was I wrong about it?
Max and Lucas. They were so good. I simply love them.
Dustin and Steve. Finally we have them back. That "You die, I die" has me on fence. But I just know they will come out unscathed.
It was definitely high time Mr. Clarke knew about everything going on in Hawkins.
That backstory of Henry. We still don't have the full picture. Holly was interrupted by Max when she was trying to look around in his memory.
Out-of-Context Thoughts
Months ago, I came across a leaked photo of Hopper and Mike. Based on everything happening now, here’s what I think might happen:
Eleven will probably have to fake her death and go somewhere far away, somewhere with one or more waterfalls (it’s been implied more than once).
Hopper and Mike will likely be talking about the same situation.
If my reading of the show is completely wrong, then Mike will be wallowing in grief until he finds out Eleven’s whereabouts. Once he does, he’ll go to her.
If I’ve been reading it correctly, Eleven will continue to live a better, happier life in another country, away from everyone from her previous life.
ever since i saw that shot of mike looking at will at the end of ep4 i’ve been saying “omg he’s about to get sooo annoying about him” and god was i right
Hey there!! It’s been ages!
I’ve been a Byler believer for so long, and I genuinely see what the writers and creators are trying to do. I get it, I really do.
But I’m terrified they might pull a Riverdale on me! What if, in the end, El dies and Mike is left grieving, or the show just ends on an open note? I honestly can’t handle open endings — they make my heart ache.
And then there’s the thought of Will or Mike dying… I can’t even. I really don’t think Will will die, and if he does, it would probably only be for a few tense seconds or minutes. But what if they actually do something shocking like that?
The creators have so many ways to ruin our hopes:
An open ending that leaves everything hanging.
Killing a character right after they finally confess or realize they love each other.
Ugh… I just want them to get their happy ending, you know? I’ve invested too much in this, and the idea of heartbreak keeps me up at night.
I haven't seen Riverdale so I don't what happened there, but take heart, dear Byler - I have no doubt this season will not disappoint!
The Duffers have stated they've known the end since the beginning and that this season revolves around Will coming into his own. They told Finn Mike's obliviousness in the van scene would "pay off" and Noah said that we'd be "hap-- satisfied" with the way it turns out.
I can't see them building all this up just to leave it open-ended, or to have it end (through death) right when it starts. That would not be hap-satisfying to anyone.
They've tossed us the breadcrumbs of having Will ask what signals to look for (signals we've already seen throughout the seasons, btw) so from a writing standpoint, there's no reason to set that up unless there are going to be more signals for Will to recognize and decide if he's brave enough to act upon. (Spoiler: he will be.)
There's so much queer coding and symbolism, and foreshadowing of the snowball becoming an avalanche. Vol. 1 starts with a Coke can having a little spurt when Will drops it and ends with the pipes exploding in the bathroom. (Snowball, meet avalanche.) An avalanche is not subtle or open for interpretation. An avalanche hits you over the head with what's happening. And they've warned us it's coming.
Mike telling Will he's inherently magic (a signal) and Will acting on it with a playful shove is our snowball - the avalanche has yet to come.
💛💚💙
we should talk more about how mike and will used the same fucking memory to save the other in different occasions

Stranger Things hints at the impending breakup of Mike and Eleven, as their relationship struggles to survive in Season 5.
Can't believe this is actually happening. I’m glad more people are finally seeing what I’ve been seeing all along.
Only a handful of people around me had picked up on it. Some of my friends even admitted they thought Will was straight until Season 5 Volume 1 came out, which made me wonder what they were watching during Season 4.
I’m just hoping this Christmas and New Year feel gentle and joyful, not only in real life but in the show too. 🎄💫 Hoping and Praying for these two to be happy and together.💫
