I feel like there needs to be a poll of people who have not read Catalyst to determine if most viewers understood what was supposed to be happening with Galen Erso or not. I’ve just seen a very long meta about Galen that assumes he was pro Death Star at some point, and I was like “…what?”

I started reading Catalyst before seeing the movie but only got about 12 chapters in before I went to see Rogue One, but that was enough to establish Galen very definitively as a pacifist who went to great lengths to refuse to serve either the Republic or the Separatists during the Clone Wars. The first few chapters are all about him remaining in prison rather than make a deal, even though Lyra is pregnant and gives birth to Jyn. It’s shown that he just wanted to use his knowledge and talents to research harnessing crystals to create cheap reliable energy for Outer Rim worlds.

So I went to see Rogue One not knowing how Orson Krennic finally got him involved with the Death Star but assuming that it was some manipulation or coercion. And the movie confirmed that for me by showing Galen in hiding and all that.

But without Catalyst apparently it’s not clear?

I’ve just now gotten to the part of the story where Orson straight up lies to Galen and tricks him into working for the Empire by telling him that he’s going to be working on using kyber crystals to create cheap and reliable energy, because Palpatine is all gung ho about making the galaxy better now that he isn’t at war and the power hungry Jedi aren’t around to forbid anyone from studying/using kyber crystals. Lyra is suspicious and Orson is spying on them. I assume the rest of the story will be about Lyra uncovering the true purpose of the kyber crystals and then revealing this to Galen and then escaping from Krennic and going into hiding to set up the beginning of Rogue One.

tl;dr I’ve been assuming everyone knew the general gist of Galen being a pacifist and the dramatic irony of how he ended up designing the very thing he most abhorred, rather than thinking he suddenly had a change of heart about super weapons at some point. But if you never read Catalyst, what did you assume?
