okay imma put this out there bc when i try to say it in irl its very clear that people don't think i'm saying anything important and won't pass it on to the people who need to hear it
the reason you can only drink that one particular brand of that one particular beverage is because you only drink that one particular brand of that one particular beverage
people complain to me all the time about their family member or whoever who only drinks pepsi, or coke, or mountain dew or whatever, it's usually a caffeinated soda but not always, and they're so mystified by the fact that they "won't drink water" and like! that used to be me!! i was amazed last summer when i started craving specifically water this last summer, not that i was craving a coke but had reached the limit of what i'll allow myself but actually craving water, and i'll tell you how i did it, which made the whole thing click
i started drinking iced tea occasionally
yeah, no, for real, it just kind of snowballed from there. obligatory i'm not a doctor and this is purely anecdotal but soda is EXPENSIVE these days so you want to try it, trust
okay so ever since i was a kid there was this one particular brand of instant iced tea i liked. they sold it at my local aldi, its the same brand as all their bagged teas and i like it a lot. but i don't get to go to aldi that often, but i got instacart and i remembered liking it so i figured why not
and it's very good, sweet and lemony but it doesn't get overly lemony if you leave it out on the table for a few hours
lipton instant iced tea has that problem though, it turns into lemonade over time. not as good as an arnold palmer, it's just kinda in betweeny and lame
so when aldi either ran out of my iced tea mix or just wouldn't ship it over instacart for months, i tried other store brand iced tea mixes hoping that some would be similar enough to aldi brand, but alas, the lemon-becomes-too-strong problem is pretty common. not as bad as lipton tho, and sweeter to boot. since i tend to finish my quart water bottle easily over a shift and mom doesn't mind lemony iced tea over the course of a whole day, it was an acceptable compromise
so my day was now consisting of 2-3 cokes per day and a quart of iced tea. depending on the size of the cokes, this is about adequate to moderately under hydrating.
(wreh wreh wreh nothing but water counts as one of your 8 glasses of water per day: you are trying to solve a problem that is about 20 steps down the line from the one i am trying to solve. stop trying to teach people who are learning multiplication to do calculus. i appreciate that what you're doing is impressive and morally good, but it's not helpful over here. also water is neither the best nor worst, and only alcohol does more harm than good specifically re: hydration.)
so i was moderately under hydrating and we're getting into summer, so i'm looking for something i can specifically bring to work without looking like an asshole because at this point i won't touch coffee or any of our juices or especially plain water, so if i take from the restaurant, it will just be coke and i have noticed that the coke tastes better if i have something else in between. and like this iced tea mix comes in a fuckoff huge canister so if i bring it customers will think we're selling it which now that i think about it why not? probably bc we'd have to have 4 different sweetness levels available fml my life okay
so i start looking near the iced tea and i find the mio knock offs and the powdered gatorades, immune i.v. etc
and bro, i am apparently quite potassium deficient
so the thing is things that have added nutrients are seen as value added, so they can get quite expensive, so i'm trying to buy one box/squirt to get me thru a week but also idk if y'all remember last summer was fucking brutal, i went thru like 20 fuses for the a/c at work because our systems are designed for slowly rising to a peak and then immediately dropping once the sun sets, not hitting 98 at noon and staying there for 6 to 8 hours. so at that point i got a canister of gatorade (light blue bc i'm not a cop) and was making it by the pitcher on ice to get thru the day, sometimes 3 in one shift which is. i crave potassium what can i say.
and THAT is when i started craving water. cuz i don't actually like cold drinks and tap water is cold but not THAT cold so it was perfect
(also sometime in there i was experimenting with nondairy creamer bc it turns out i'm lactose intolerant and coffee is GREAT when i have a huge thing of the cheap powder around lmao.)
so that's my suggestion in a nutshell: keep trying different stuff until you have 4-5 things you go to every day and suddenly water will be one of them. and then just keep trying things bc it's fun i guess? the important part was starting off with something that was also extremely sugary because the sugar in soda pop is especially bad (illegal in europe bad lmao), especially when combined with carbonation i've heard? so anything with plain sugar is going to be better than a pop and then when you have a few of those that you actively like it's pretty good. variety is truly the spice of life

the uk has famously insanely hard water by american standards so its possible that op just. genuinely has a taste aversion for limestone deposits. i had a taste aversion for orange juice that lasted 30 years and for grape candy that lasts to this day bc that's what my parents gave me when i was a sick kid. (grape flavored cough syrup but like. the same flavor, you know?)
telling op to see a doctor and that op might have something medically wrong with her feels like overkill to me. like yeah the situation that led to you being this fucking picky is probably complicated and hard to pull apart but like. what is a doctor going to do? in my case it wasn't the sugar being needed (the second time anyway), it was a taste aversion to the leftovers in the tap water and a lack of options that got me so stuck, and realizing i was an adult who could buy whatever i like (including overly sugary iced tea mix) that got me unstuck.
tangentially, the first time i tasted something that i simply didn't like, i was 23. before that, EVERY time there was something i didn't like, there was a reaction, not just a lack of passion. (they didn't used to test for all the chemicals that toxic algae can let off, genuinely got off of water bc it tasted of microcystine lol )
anyway i hope someone tells op that it doesn't have to be all water with 0 flavor or just this specific cordial and instead she can try other sugary beverages until she has several she can rotate between and eventually start adding non sugary beverages to the rotation😁
