Part of what makes Armand such a scary villain and effective antagonist to me is how effectively he's able to convince everyone including himself that he actually completely helpless. If it's out of your hands and you could not prevent it then you can justify anything. If you really convince yourself you have no control over your own life then you can do any amount of cruelty and still conceptualize yourself as at worst a helpless accomplice and at best yourself a victim (it's so hard for you, that you have to do this!). This is what Armand does. And it does make sense, because he had a formative life of abject powerlessness, and he learned, for good reason, that he should expect to have no agency over his life. But then he carries that mentality into situations where he does have the power. "Armand believes he had no choice about the things he did to Louis" isn't the same as "Armand ACTUALLY had no choice" and while you can understand and sympathize with why he thinks that way, it's something that ultimately just makes him that much more dangerous, because every action is justified in advance as being the only possible course of action.

The way Anne Rice describes Armand, several times, is sort of this ethereal, alien quality that doesn’t quite feel like it’s… She called it childish, but I don’t see it as childish. I see it more as like an alien that’s unable to understand himself, his own needs[?], only able to play a part. So when there’s no one to see them, they kind of just go a little bit dead, soulless, that kind of thing. That’s something that I took on, tried to.

Just watched the finale and can I just say, it is a PLEASURE to get unapplogetic gothic horror camp at this big a budget, with this level writing, acting, everything.
