modern aus are great don't get me wrong BUT stede bonnet and edward teach were made for a 1970's au where they meet in a greenpeace type of expedition in the ocean because ed is one of the first environment experts fighting against climate change to ensure the level of the sea doesn't get high enough to let thousands of people living in islands like the one where he grew up without a home and stede is using his new found liberty after his divorce to do what he always wanted to do but his father prohibited and that's being a marine biologist ( and also get a boyfriend), without even needing to change the soundtrack of the show

i can totally picture stede in the middle of a dozen bar brawls not fighting anyone just running around trying to save every empty bottle he can spot and, with an armful of them, taking one right out of the hands of a pirate about to smash it against someone's head with a "I will keep this if you don't mind, kind sir" because he has a lot of letters drafted in his mind to send to his beloved edward

I get irritated with the whole idea that Mary was "right" to try to kill Stede. No, she's not right! And he's not right! They're both very very wrong! She even says it: "We just can't seem to stop hurting each other." She knows that they are constantly causing each other pain because they are two people forced into an intimate relationship that neither of them wants, trapped in something they can't see a way out of!

It's such a good depiction because neither of them is really the bad guy here. They are part of a patriarchal system that traps and warps and the only way either of them can be free is death (symbolic or otherwise).

It would have been so easy for this show to decide that Stede was the one with the crush on Ed (and it even looks like that’s what they’re setting up in the first three episodes, with his hero worship of Blackbeard).

Instead Stede is like “my good buddy Ed! :D” and Ed is like “….I am achingly and irrevocably in love.”

To be fair, Stede is definitely in love too. He just doesn’t realize that’s what’s happening. He’s never been in love before, but he’s never had a dear friend either. He probably assumes this is just what real friendship feels like--he doesn’t know that it’s both.
