Previously our heroes looted the left hallway of the vault. @the-frog-wizard-leep had the good sense to take their newfound riches and leave, while everyone else went down the ominous right hallway. They were greeted by destroyed Titan automata and opened deleted the door anyway.

Something from the other side is leaking a tremendous amount of magical energy and is trying to batter our heroes to death with tendrils

*Right before a Tendril hit me i vanish in a Puff of Fire and appear on top of it*

Now this does look interesting.

How about we even the odds a little...

*I say as i summon an equal amount of Fire serpents to counter the Tendrils and attempt to stop them from moving*

Vell performs a series of complex incantations, then stretches out their hands, visibly straining. Slowly, but with increasing speed, the treasure and debris scattered around the room begins to float and Vell prepares to launch the items at one of the tendrils.

Telekinesis is my specialty—I’ll try not to hit you guys, but it’s hard to control this many items! Stay clear!

This is the Rumored Vault we were supposed to find. It was easier getting in then expected.

(OOC) I'm trying to keep things concise because of the limits of this format

Previously our heroes traveled through the Boiling Hills to the portal platform. The portal activated and something made itself known from the other side. @yeast-wizard and @the-frog-wizard-leep 's frogs were unaffected by this.

Our heroes almost turned around, but @leadwizard threw themself into the portal anyway.

@concoctionboy slipped into the vault and found an ancient wizard bank sealed up with contract magic in the left hallway. He also felt the presence from outside the portal emanating from the right hallway.

@sorcererest-sorcerer and @leadwizard narrowly defeated the gatekeeping Twins (pronouns: they/them [plural]); automata built in the same style as the Centipede

The vault storage is as watertight as the front door (not watertight).

The Sorcerer summons a spell-light that follows him around in the air.

“We should remain vigilant @the-mighty-dalob. I expect there will be greater dangers within.”

The Sorcerer immediately heads toward the presence.

Oh i am sure we'll do just fine, we still have a lot of Powerful magicians with us and can keep each others backs clear. We should start with catching up to our Living Potion companion again i'd say. We don't want to leave them along to long considering they don't really have access to magic themselves.

The Sorcerer stops and turns around.

“Right, let’s take care of this vault business first. The weird magic presence can wait.”

Once he enters the vault room the Sorcerer casts a few different unlocking/opening spells.

When those don’t work he waits patiently to see if @concoctionboy can do something.

Well, I can have the little copy of me slip under one of the vault doors; I don't know whether it'll be able to do anything once it's in there, but at least it'll be able to see what's inside.

I could actually split off a few more tiny copies and have them go under other doors to check multiple vaults. I mean, my volume is limited, but these copies are small enough I can afford to create a few without diminishing myself too much. I should be able to make five or so without noticeably shrinking. So I can try to check out five vaults. If there are no markings on the doors or anything that makes any of them stand out in particular, I can just send them under five doors at random...

The Sorcerer begins sorting the magic items by type and effect. He uses a divination spell to understand their workings and to differentiate them from the mundane treasures. He has no use for gold or currency.

As long as the door is made of metal i might be able to just melt through it without much issue.

Other materials might pose a little more resistance but with different approaches i should be able to walk through the door by making a Me sized Hole in it.

Please take a step back everyone. I wouldn't want to cook and/or Boil you.

*I walk towards the closest Vault door and start burning brighter and brighter*

Uhhh, yes i have missed this...

*As the brightness rises it becomes blinding and after a short while it suddenly stops. i am standing past the door with a perfectly person sized hole behind me, to @verylegalwizard dismay a few of the documents closest to me seem a little singed*

Well this door certainly was Metal. We can enter this one now, the edges of the metal shoud be cool enough not to burn you.

The Sorcerer plays with a piece of slag like putty until it cools into a metal ball.

“Fun!”

Once he is finished sorting out the magic items and pocketing the ones that interest him, the Sorcerer walks through the door hole.

There's definitely a system of labeling to the doors, but it just looks like an old numbering system. By checking under each one @concoctionboy is able to see which are duds and which are worthwhile.

Stacks of bullion behind one, a pile of ingots of the same material as the automata behind another. Behind other doors are larger magical artifacts or rows of filing cabinets. One artifact of obvious note is a gilded box with an evil aura on a pedestal in the center of its room.

Along with the interesting magical trinkets are others that have lost function with time. For example, one of two whereabouts rings, but the other has since been destroyed.

"You're not breaking things, are you?" Shout the Twins from the distant entrance

(OOC) I don't have many specific artifacts in mind, so just narrate which doors you open & what you get

The Sorcerer returns to the entrance to speak with the automata.

“My apologies for the noise. We just dropped a few of our supplies and we’re trying to clean it up. @yeast-wizard brought way too much stuff.”

“If you don’t mind my asking, who made you two? The magical engineering you’re comprised of is undeniably impressive!”

*I conjure a piece of lead and discolor it to mostly match the vault*

“There, should be fine if the come over here.”

*The hooded wizard finally pipes up after a very long while of being quiet*

I would like to grab something, but this truly doesn’t feel like my mission. It feels more like my dead boss’s.

Though, if I were to grab anything I would grab the ingots.

If no one else is interested in it of course.

Also, if anyone finds anything that would be useful in a resurrection that doesn’t need it, I’ll take it.

“You can have whatever, we won’t be able to carry it all by ourselves anyways” I say, as I sort items into currency, lesser, greater, and the really good ones.

I'd actually take some of the Automata Ingots as well, i Have something in mind for them.

I know a smith on the Island that might be able to identify and use them.

Otherwise I'd like a look through the artifacts i am looking for a few specific ones and I'd like to check if i can find a "piece" in there.

The Sorcerer rushes back to the vault.

“Guys! We’re running out of time! We should really wrap- THE CORPSE!!!”

He grabs its legs and starts pulling it away from @fix-it-wizard

Do we need the Corpse? Or can i simply Incinerate it? That would be SO muich easier. Also on the Timing issue. Do we have anyone with a little more then basic knowledge in area chronomancy here? We could put up a 1=5 or 1=10 [1sec equals 5sec etc.] bubble around us to give us more time.

Vell thrashes around, trying to dislodge the corpse’s jaws from their leg.

AAACK! I don’t want to be a zombie! Wait, @the-mighty-dalob— don’t destroy it! It’s probably in here for a reason - we should find out what it is!

Vell enters the room and paces back and forth, brow furrowed, musing over how to open the vault.

I could cast a Spell of Ethereality on myself to walk through the door — unless the vault has a defense against that, in which case I would be, well, immediately pulverized into ghostly dust. That might be a last resort option, but I’m willing to take that chance. Ethereal Defense Enchantments weren’t invented until about a century ago, and this vault looks older than that.

@the-mighty-dalob, how concentrated are you able to make your fire? You might be able to condense it into a laser of heat to melt through the entrance, if we can’t find another way to get it open.

After (temporarily) defeating the Centipede, our heroes battled transportation!

@the-mighty-dalob sent @sorcererest-sorcerer into a geyser. Sorcererest learned a workaround to the Boiling Hills teleportation hazards just in time for @concoctionboy & @leadwizard to save them!

Previously, Mr. Boy had observed a pyramid, an unusual flat area, and a stationary dust storm. Now that noon has come, the heroes recall learning that a dousing rod can find the vault. Which location will they visit?

After a while of driving the magic carpet, the Sorcerer realizes that he still doesn’t know where he’s going.

“Does anyone have a dowsing rod? All I have is this dowel rod.”

Legal looks up as they give @the-frog-wizard-leep some fire resistance ink.

“I’m afraid I don’t. Anyone else?”

Fermis takes off his hat and looks inside...

...nope, not me!

He does, however, have an abnormally large candy cane, which he puts in his mouth.

“Perhaps we can create one somehow?”

Expertly driving with one hand, the Sorcerer rolls a small marble around in his other.

Hey, good idea! I have some enchanting equipment in my pack, as well as some elixirs, crystals, and other magical whatnots. I just need a recipe and an item to enchant. Does anybody have anything like that?

*Leep looked through their pockets.* “Does it have to be a specific type of item?”

Hmm… I’m not entirely sure, but going by the name, I think a rod or staff would probably work best.

We Embark

Thanks everyone for joining me on my quest to the vault underneath the Boiling Hills! Here’s everyone who wants to come:

I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone. Now, the Hat of Knowledge was very cryptic, but it revealed that some sort of “automata” were guarding the vault, and that we should be prepared against harsh temperatures. One more thing that I didn’t add in my main announcement is that it also revealed that the vault could be opened at noon with a Rod of Dousing. Does anyone have one, or know anything about it?

Before we set out for the vault, is there anything else we should do to prepare?

Fermis slowly pushes a large crate that is obviously too heavy for him to easily move. It's full of glass bottles filled with an odd liquid and with a rag stuffed into them - ye olde molotov, if you will.

The number of them is completely unreasonable, no one person would ever need a 6 foot crate full of molotov cocktails...

I brought supplies!

i shall be bringing my spare Spellbook (i would bring the good copy but i do not wish to lose it adventuring) and i have a few different spells prepared already

Vell rushes over to Fermis, clearly trying to assist but unsure of how to help move the giant crate.

Fermis, that is… uh… do you need any help? How are you going to get those into the vault?

The man simply appears. "Yo." A chair appears behind him and he sits down. "What's the progress on our little plan?"

Well we're still approaching, Fermis here brought a Large Crate of Molotov Cocktails and is just pushing it along slowly.

"Why does he not use fireball? It's more effective."

You're telling that to the Resident Pyromancer. As far as i am aware, as a Sentient Yeast Blob, they can't use magic. But that didn't deter them to come!

"Well, I guess I can't blame them. I'm only here to have fun, I'm not even getting a cut of the reward."

I'm after Potential Artifacts of all kinds and can manage all kinds of Heat no matter how high or low so i came with

A floating disk could lift the crate

Well mine would be made of Fire and i don't think anyone wants the Explosives Crate be lifted with Fire... Anyone else with some Kinetic Magic?

"A disc? You are all too complicated with your magic. It makes it less efficient." With a flick of his finger, the crate lifts into the air.

you mentioned extreme temperatures… does that include fire?

i have some fireproof ink, that i use on my paperwork sometimes, you’d just need to draw on yourself somewhere for it to come into affect.

Fire is usually hot

legal takes out a ballpoint pen with a fire insignia, and doodles a smiley face onto their forearm. The orange ink seeps in, glowing briefly before going dull ashy grey.

anyone else want some? it should last until the drawing wears off (about ten hours). if you want it to last indefinitely that requires a contract, which uses a lot of ink so i’d rather you didn’t.

I mean, if you have any to spare I could probably use it. I think I'm pretty immune to direct physical damage like blows and blades; if you hit me or stab me either the weapon will pass right through me, or it will disrupt my shape but I can just reform. But I think extreme heat is one thing that probably could do me serious harm; since I'm basically made of liquid if it gets too hot I could, like, evaporate. Or maybe just part of me would evaporate and it would leave a residue behind; I'm not sure, but I don't want to find out the hard way.

On the other hand, I'm not sure you could really draw on me, since, again, I'm made of liquid. But maybe mixing a tiny bit of the ink into me would work? I don't know.

Oh don't worry about the heat, just stay close and I'll keep the Temperature around in survivable levels, i can control temperatures around me.

After some travel you find yourselves standing on a rocky outcropping at the edge of the Boiling Hills. This is the last solid ground you'll stand on until you find the vault.

As far as you can see are shifting dunes of bright red sand interspersed with great towers of steam where geysers have launched the strongly colored sand miles into the air.

The sky is colored red from the dust; obscuring the sun and flattening colors. Compasses don't work here.

Tagging in @jhomikle for the next piece of narration

Vell squints at the blindingly bright red landscape, pulling their cloak over their mouth and nose to protect from the sand and dust.

Everyone, focus up. We don’t know what we’ll find out there, so we should be prepared for anything - but especially the shifting ground. We need to keep a close eye on Fermis and Leep, as they are small and therefore especially vulnerable to being pulled under the sand.

Vell turns to Dalob.

In case of emergency, would you be able to melt an area of sand into solid glass for us to stand on?

I was actually about to suggest i walk in front and do that in general.

It seems like the safest and easiest solution, the only danger would be that a, previously hidden, Geysir erupts under the walkway.

I know this may be kind of redundant because a lot of you are powerful wizards and can probably fly, but... all those steam vents kind of give me an idea; I could form myself into a hollow membrane and fill myself with steam and, well, basically sort of turn myself into a hot air balloon? Anyway, I could maybe sort of do an aerial survey of the area and see if I can spot anything that might give a clue to the vault's location.

Sounds like a pretty good idea…

A little embarrassing to admit it but I’ve never learned fly as I have been in space for most of my wizarding careerand ive never had to; I’ve only ever had to propel myself with jets of air.

Huh, interesting... Does that work in Atmosphere? Could you make yourself jump high with that?

It does work in atmosphere, but is horribly inefficient. I have enough of a basic mana reserve to propel myself up to about 10-15 feet in the air if I have a jumping start but I’m drained after that as I’m usually a component caster.

*He ruffles around inside his cloak and pulls out multiple jars of vibrant dust and light*

I use this for my more effective spells.

Hey everyone, what've I missed? *The wizard suddenly appears standing on his head*

Not much, we haven’t found the vault yet. Concoction Boy has turned himself into a hot air balloon and is surveying the skies for us.

Did the hat provide any clues other than the vault being in the boiling hills?

Hm, well, it's... mostly just a lot of bright red sand spreading out as far as I can see, even from up here.

There are a few things I can see that are a little different, but from this far away I can't tell exactly what they are and whether they might be important.

A ways off and, uh, maybe about thirty degrees right from the direction you're facing is what looks like it might be the tip of some kind of black pyramid sticking out of the sand. It looks like it's too regular to be likely to be natural... but like I said, it's pretty far away, and I can't be sure of that. It could be just a rock.

A little farther off and, uh, ten degrees left, maybe? There's a big, flat shiny area. Hard to tell what it is from here. Could be a big lake; could be a salt flat; could be, I don't know, a giant magic mirror.

A little to the left of that there's a giant dust storm that... doesn't seem to be moving? Or if it is it's moving very slowly. Maybe there's something hidden inside or, or, you know, maybe it's just a dust storm.

Oh, but speaking of moving, there is something that is moving. It's really far away, so it's hard to tell what it is, but it's moving pretty fast, and, uh, roughly in our direction, though that could be a coincidence. It's coming from, um, maybe forty-five degrees to your left, roughly? As far as I can tell, it looks... kind of like a giant centipede? But it's so far away, and the glare from the sand makes it even harder to make out, that I could be completely wrong about that.

i am wary of the giant sand beasts. they sound dangerous

i have a magic missile spell if it starts to cause trouble

I’ll just follow the group here, though I do have some fairly powerful attack spells. Only issue is that they require cosmic components which I have a limited supply of.

My frogs can help in an fight, assuming the wish I made with Artemis still stands they won’t be harmed (although i do feel a little bad asking the frogs for help).

The train sized Centipede approaches your group like a moose through snow. It's metal carapace has been polished by the sand and gleams under the ruddy sky. It pursues two figures on a flying carpet: @sorcererest-sorcerer and @leadwizard (if Leadwizard still wants to join).

The Centipede drones a message on repeat through an air-raid siren voice

This is a message

Disturbance is unwelcome in this place

Leave now

“FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!”

The Sorcerer dodges and weaves through the geysers, trying to predict their expulsions and steer the carpet at the same time.

At the last second he spots the group.

“Wizards! Get out of the way or help me!”

I CAST MAGIC MISSILE ON THE CENTIPEDE

three ball point pens fly out like missiles and strike the beast

The Sorcerer creates a gust of wind that propels him over the wizards and further away from the centipede. He comes to a halt atop a large dune and dismounts the carpet.

“BEAM ATTACK BEAM ATTACK BEAM ATTACK”

Three beams of light hit the centipede, scorching its armor.

The magic missiles would have killed the average person, but instead they break into sparks against the Centipede's armor leaving small scorch marks.

The Centipede coils around the group of wizards but doesn't contact the shield. It arcs over & under itself forming a column into the air.

It continues repeating its message and flames can be seen from between the segments of its carapace

I mean, I know you guys just flung some but I’ll feel left out if I don’t fling some of my own.

Cosmic magic missile!

*He tears open his cloak as some glass shatters and 3 missiles fly, they burn bright like the sun but hold a space-like pattern on them.*

(OOC:

I’m gonna stay true to my component casting and will be keeping track of how many jars I have left in the bottom of each of my messages in parentheses.

1 jar used, 19 jars left.)

Sorcerer huddles behind the shield with the other wizards.

“So this is some kind of centipede robot guardian thing? Maybe we can kill it with lightning spells. Short circuit it perhaps?”

"Don't worry, I got this. Transmutation is my thing." With a flick of his wrist, a wand appears in his hand which he points at the robot. Speaking incantations, he begins casting transmutation magic in order to try to turn the centipede ROBOT into a normal small centipede.

It's a bigger drain than first expected, but not unreasonable for a transmutation of this size.

Magic crackles between Immoral Wizard and the Centipede as the workings take effect. All at once the Centipede dissapears, releasing the plumes of fire that had been trapped inside it.

A small normal centipede bounces harmlessly off the shield and quickly burrows into the sand.

The spell won't last forever on something like that, so y'all had best get moving

That flat thing concoction boy saw could be part of the vault. Do you guys (gender-neutral) want to head over there?

“How are we getting there? My carpet only seats four.”

We could all collaborate on an Enlargement Charm to make the carpet bigger

“Oh! Excellent idea.”

The Sorcerer begins preparation on the spell

“Before we leave, can I try something?”

(Ooc: remember I’m not super good with these posts, this being my first quest, so if you can give me pointers that would be great)

Sorcerer stops casting.

“Sure @leadwizard what did you have in mind? Also, was that you hanging on for dear life from the back of my magic carpet?”

(Oh I guess yeah or there’s just like barely enough space)

If I try to transmute the shield… are you okay with that?

Oh goddammit!

I missed the first action, i suddenly got a dragon egg that was about to hatch and needed to take care of that.

On the Plus side i now have a small shiny red dragon with me.

*A small dragon lets out a puff of fire on my shoulder*

Onto the Transmutation of the shield, we can summon a new one should the current one buckle under the Transmutation.

I'd say go for it, but the Summoner of the shield has the Authority over it. (@fix-it-wizard)

Vell is struggling to keep up the large shield, and lets the spell dissipate now that the threat is gone. They let out a breath and swig a mana potion.

I can’t keep up a shield spell like that for very long, so I think we’d have better chances transmuting the carpet itself if possible. I want to save my mana for emergencies.

Due to the overpopulation of the Greater Invasive Whiteboy in many ecological niches. Please check with your local governance for approval.

Alternatives you might consider are: Go Whiteboy Go, and Play That Funky Music Whiteboy

both of which use existing Whiteboys in the area as opposed to summoning new ones.

Well mine would be made of Fire and i don't think anyone wants the Explosives Crate be lifted with Fire... Anyone else with some Kinetic Magic?

i have some fireproof ink, that i use on my paperwork sometimes, you’d just need to draw on yourself somewhere for it to come into affect.

legal takes out a ballpoint pen with a fire insignia, and doodles a smiley face onto their forearm. The orange ink seeps in, glowing briefly before going dull ashy grey.

On the other hand, I'm not sure you could really draw on me, since, again, I'm made of liquid. But maybe mixing a tiny bit of the ink into me would work? I don't know.

Oh don't worry about the heat, just stay close and I'll keep the Temperature around in survivable levels, i can control temperatures around me.

After some travel you find yourselves standing on a rocky outcropping at the edge of the Boiling Hills. This is the last solid ground you'll stand on until you find the vault.

As far as you can see are shifting dunes of bright red sand interspersed with great towers of steam where geysers have launched the strongly colored sand miles into the air.

The sky is colored red from the dust; obscuring the sun and flattening colors. Compasses don't work here.

Vell turns to Dalob.

In case of emergency, would you be able to melt an area of sand into solid glass for us to stand on?

I was actually about to suggest i walk in front and do that in general.

It seems like the safest and easiest solution, the only danger would be that a, previously hidden, Geysir erupts under the walkway.

Sounds like a pretty good idea…

A little embarrassing to admit it but I’ve never learned fly as I have been in space for most of my wizarding careerand ive never had to; I’ve only ever had to propel myself with jets of air.

Huh, interesting... Does that work in Atmosphere? Could you make yourself jump high with that?

Not much, we haven’t found the vault yet. Concoction Boy has turned himself into a hot air balloon and is surveying the skies for us.

Did the hat provide any clues other than the vault being in the boiling hills?

Hm, well, it's... mostly just a lot of bright red sand spreading out as far as I can see, even from up here.

There are a few things I can see that are a little different, but from this far away I can't tell exactly what they are and whether they might be important.

i am wary of the giant sand beasts. they sound dangerous

i have a magic missile spell if it starts to cause trouble

I’ll just follow the group here, though I do have some fairly powerful attack spells. Only issue is that they require cosmic components which I have a limited supply of.

My frogs can help in an fight, assuming the wish I made with Artemis still stands they won’t be harmed (although i do feel a little bad asking the frogs for help).

The Sorcerer dodges and weaves through the geysers, trying to predict their expulsions and steer the carpet at the same time.

At the last second he spots the group.

“Wizards! Get out of the way or help me!”

I CAST MAGIC MISSILE ON THE CENTIPEDE

three ball point pens fly out like missiles and strike the beast

The Sorcerer creates a gust of wind that propels him over the wizards and further away from the centipede. He comes to a halt atop a large dune and dismounts the carpet.

“BEAM ATTACK BEAM ATTACK BEAM ATTACK”

Three beams of light hit the centipede, scorching its armor.

The magic missiles would have killed the average person, but instead they break into sparks against the Centipede's armor leaving small scorch marks.

The Centipede coils around the group of wizards but doesn't contact the shield. It arcs over & under itself forming a column into the air.

It continues repeating its message and flames can be seen from between the segments of its carapace

I mean, I know you guys just flung some but I’ll feel left out if I don’t fling some of my own.

Cosmic magic missile!

*He tears open his cloak as some glass shatters and 3 missiles fly, they burn bright like the sun but hold a space-like pattern on them.*

I’m gonna stay true to my component casting and will be keeping track of how many jars I have left in the bottom of each of my messages in parentheses.

Sorcerer huddles behind the shield with the other wizards.

“So this is some kind of centipede robot guardian thing? Maybe we can kill it with lightning spells. Short circuit it perhaps?”

It's a bigger drain than first expected, but not unreasonable for a transmutation of this size.

Magic crackles between Immoral Wizard and the Centipede as the workings take effect. All at once the Centipede dissapears, releasing the plumes of fire that had been trapped inside it.

A small normal centipede bounces harmlessly off the shield and quickly burrows into the sand.

The spell won't last forever on something like that, so y'all had best get moving

That flat thing concoction boy saw could be part of the vault. Do you guys (gender-neutral) want to head over there?

“How are we getting there? My carpet only seats four.”

i shall be bringing my spare Spellbook (i would bring the good copy but i do not wish to lose it adventuring) and i have a few different spells prepared already
