You will never 100% idiotproof your creative work & if you try to, you will only succeed in smothering the soul out of it. btw
Some mixed doodles from work. Haven't really been able to work on the things I've wanted to lately, but maybe I can eventually. Just been trying to get used to the schedule, but by the time I have a moment to myself in the evenings I just wanna crash.
One page is of some doodles I did for an idea. I wanted to test making a randomized system in rpg maker to have ghosts show up with different ailments, and you have to make specific mixed coffee drinks to restore them. Then teas got added. I think I need to do more coffee research.
Did a redraw of an old class project a couple days ago. We had to design a mascot for food packaging. I still liked the design and wanted to tweak her a little bit, and include some extra faces. I think the new stubby antennae are so cute.
Side note, I need to practice eyes emoting without eyebrows more.
Since I got some work on my game art done yesterday, today I'm gonna be indulgent. Skull Bunny be upon ye.
Some words on my last project
Jam Thoughts - HMS Aeternum Demo flamingteddy.itch.io/hms-aeternum...
Some very belated after thoughts on my project. TLDR is that I go over what went well, and what went not so well with the project. I make mention of some known bugs that are being fixed, in addition to the new art being made to polish the demo. I plan to have the update for it ready within the next month or so, but work on it has been slow due to some things in my life picking up. The portraits are now finished, and I have rough sketches for all the CGs IĀ have planned. I only need to finish three of them in order release the demo, so it should take too terribly long. Hopefully.
As a side note, I do have a 1 dollar tier on my ko-fi for early sneak peaks of some of the art and work I've done for the current project. Some of the pictures will probably make it here eventually, but I'll be leaving some of them there for now.
Been a bit busy as of late looking for work, but still squeezed time to make some cards. The crow was a birthday card, and the cat was a thank you card for our neighbor for helping us get some cats in the local colony fixed to keep the population under control.
It's kinda nice just scribbling them out quick with the acrylic markers. Makes me want to do traditional even more often. I still need to get more of my digital work done however.
I got Arrtx markers to try out while I do more art. I normally don't use acrylics cause most mess with my nose. These have no smell and don't irritate my nose, so I made another reverse mermaid to play around with them.
I have found that my ol' pilot pens I use for lining don't work that well on them, since the ink sits on the acrylis so takes longer to dry. Regular ballpoint pen though I use for sketching? Takes it like a champ with no smears. Acrylic markers are also a LOT more forgiving than I remember.
I had an itch to try to draw something ancient, so I did the Anomalocaris Canadensis fossil on its wiki page if it were alive. Started yesterday, and finished it today. I didn't get the flipper bits quite right, but I still love them all the same.
Ghost School
do you have any advice on character design?
watch The Sopranos
i actually wanted to elaborate on this and say that i think itās a really bad habit of a lot of artists, influenced by current media casting practices, to unconsciously or consciously make every single character they create super pretty, like everyone is just hot in that very boring, homogenous way, and this also comes as a result of people using actors and celebrities as character references or faceclaims and AI facial generation programs like Artbreeder being trained on people who are generally very pretty-looking. it results in alienating, uncanny worlds and drawings completely devoid of people who just look like regular people. it results worlds populated by mannequins fresh off the CW. I feel like whether a character is attractive or not should actually matter, be part of their character, because that kind of thing absolutely affects the way you move through the world and the way the world treats you.
so i wanted to throw in some suggestions that, whenever Iām trying to find a character reference or otherwise draw very interesting-looking yet regular-looking people, which i usually have to do for bit characters in @ikroahā or something, I tend to look for references in the following places. these are far from the only reliable way to get inspiration, this is just a non-exhaustive list of places iāve looked before for visual inspiration when needing to create a character, whether starring characters or background ones:
pre-2000s television (The Sopranos and Twin Peaks especially having incredible character design)
extras in comedy sketch shows
esports players
real photos (not staged stock photos) of line cooks
70s baseball players
athletes from more obscure olympic sports like the javelin toss or greco-roman wrestling, especially if youāre looking for a specific body type
ska, jazz, and blues musicians
firefighters
improv troupes
for teenagers, searching āhigh school english class projectā on youtube and sorting by Upload Date
state senators, small-town mayors, and generally obscure local government positions like comptroller or treasurer (yes i know politicians can be bad sometimes but smaller elections especially donāt really depend on looks)
people who walk by your window (if you live in a city like I do)
and again these are just, in my opinion, deep and easy wells to dive in if you want to get a good idea of what regular people look like. these suggestions arenāt the limits on where you can possibly find inspiration for character design
Felliniās movies have remarkably interesting and unique looking actors
Yes!!! Thereās an entire book called Felliniās Faces thatās nothing but portraits of his actors thatās phenomenal for this kind of thing, though itās fairly rare to get a hold of today.
(Since I know a lot of writers/artists follow me for costume/character design ideas!)
Gonna do some work for my game, and set up to do warm up sketches. Adorkastock dropped a new reference pack and I then knew what the warm up would be.
Maybe they're born with it, maybe it's Aquamarine~

Used this site to make these drawings after seeing it on the dash. Was doing doodles while watching emkay, and some images caught my eye enough to try to recreate them in it because why not.
