hey fun fact this has absolutely happened before. part of the push to standardize time/timezones was because factory employers had clocks set to the pace of their machinery. meaning of the workers were not doing enough, time would run slower until they had reached their goal. there is historical precedent.
a lot of people assume psychosis hallucinations are super intense all-consuming horror movie shit like the memes about the hat man or always horrible debilitating things that make you dangerous to be around
but in my experience 95% of my hallucinations are getting spooked by very clearly hearing someone knocking on my door or calling my name from another room or hearing footsteps walking behind me which are "just" my brain recreating the horror of an abusive childhood
i *have* gotten the "bugs crawling all over me" hallucination once or twice though and yeah that one is exactly as terrible horrible as it sounds AUGH

media and pop culture hypes up psychosis a lot as The Worst That Can Happen out of sanism, so even when you try and filter that cultural bias out you still assume it's based on something
when, no, psychosis is actually very simple: it's just hyperactive pattern matching. it's your brain's signal-to-noise ratio being off balance, it's seeing images in random static. it's not always this special uniquely big thing, it's in fact quite mundane a lot of the time.
no one is immune to psychosis, it's not purely the realm of the insane. anyone is one bad night of sleep or one bad case of food poisoning or one bad fever away from being just like me on my worst days.
and this, indeed, is why solidarity with the insane is so important: you, yes you too, are just one bad day from joining us, and no perceptions of being a "temporarily embarrassed sane person" will save you from the oppression of the psychiatric institution.

"Deconstruction" does not (necessarily) mean "Adding a bunch of sex and violence and drug use and suicide to a work to make it grimdark"; it means, essentially, "foregrounding the implicit contradictions in a work by making them explicit in the text to showcase and critique their ideology in the wider culture."
So, for example "Watchmen" was deconstructive because superhero comics up to that point had, by and large, not really interrogated their own role with respect to things like the military-industrial complex or the rather sordid real-life history of vigilantism in the United States or the sexual psychology of an individual dressing up in (essentially) bondage gear and going out to beat people up on the street. The sex and the violence serve a thematic purpose. It doesn't become more deconstructive by adding *more* sex and violence to it; it depends on what was in (or left out of) the original work.
That's why the best superhero deconstruction in the last 20 years was Lego Batman.

Ryan North has a (mostly) nonfiction book called "How To Invent Everything" about the basics of all sorts of important technologies. The framing device / gimmick is that it's written as a manual for stranded time travelers who may end up having to do exactly what you're describing. I'm sure there are lots of gaps that would prevent it from actually being usable as such, but as a layperson it was a great read.
I do think there are a small number of scientific insights that are known to most modern people, simple enough to communicate, and actually useful: germ theory would be a big one. But this would only make a difference if you could make people believe you, which is a big ask, since I don't think there's a quick way to prove germs are real without a microscope.
See, this is an easy demonstration of the problem: germ theory (the idea that there are extremely tiny particles or organisms that transmit illness) existed as an idea for a thousand years, (Ibn Sina, from the 11th century, thought of a similar idea) but it was unproven, and there was no way to prove it.
People knew from ancient times that certain things, like contact with sick people, bodily fluids, dead bodies, or "dirty" things/things that smell bad, can make you sick, even if they didn't know precisely how. And they couldn't know. In order to prove that a microscopic organism was the cause of a disease, you wouldn't just have to be able to observe microorganisms. You'd have to identify that there are specific microorganisms that are found in people who get a specific disease, and that they are not found in healthy people, and that exposure to infectious material that contains those microorganisms can cause a healthy person to become sick.
We think of germ theory as being "so simple!" because the rituals of protecting from harmful microorganisms are culturally ingrained in us, and we have access to the technologies to perform them. But if you were sent back to medieval times, would you be able to come up with a way to purify dirty water on a scale that would work for everybody? Could you come up with a treatment that kills the fleas that cause bubonic plague? Would you even know how to clean the clothing or tools that people used daily without damaging the item? How do you sterilize a cup made of wood or pewter? How do you make sure the water you're washing your hands with is clean? Can you make enough soap to fulfill the needs of handwashing? How do you safely examine a patient if you don't have gloves? How do you make the cloth you're using to bind a wound sterile?
Meanwhile, you probably don't even know how to safely preserve food without refrigeration, how to dispose of human waste without toilets or running water, where to dig a well, how to recognize different parasites and diseases in farm animals, how to recognize spoilage in stored grain, or how to use medicinal herbs. That's a lot of medical knowledge medieval people would have had that you don't know because you don't need to know.
"Wash your hands with soap and water" we would tell everyone! But we ourselves don't even know how to make soap!
Humans have been cooking, digging latrines, disposing of dead bodies, setting rules and norms about which foods are good to eat, and using medicines since before the beginning of civilization. Those things are all health knowledge, but it is easy to take it for granted when you have access to soap and sewers that keep your poop separate from your drinking water and Lysol and borosilicate glass and little boxes inside your house that automatically make objects the appropriate amount hot or cold to get rid of microorganisms.
There’s this Japanese drama from the 2000s called Jin about a modern day neurosurgeon who gets sent to the Edo period.
It starts out with him being able to do a miraculous surgery bc of the emergency medicine bag he had with him when he time traveled. But then later when there is a cholera outbreak, he can only save a few people due to exactly these kind of problems: sanitation is very difficult (cholera causes diarrhea); he can’t conjure medication out of thin air; and even if he can make rehydrating solution, he can only commission a few needles and rubber tubes to make IVs.
In another story arc, he tries to grow penicillin, and through a ton of labor and collaboration with Edo-period scholars, manages to succeed in isolating that strain of mold! But then there is no way to grow it at scale, and he can’t make enough to even save one patient.
I really appreciated how the series showed both how awful the state of medicine was in the past, while also demonstrating that our ancestors were doing their best with what they had. So much of our progress is not just “good ideas” but rather the slow build up of manufacturing capacity, global supply networks, and general industrialization.
That sounds really cool.
I feel like there are some things you could 'invent' like ribbed wash boards or certain basic chemical/medical knowledge/facts - like the fact that foxgloves contain digitalin, which can be used to treat some heart conditions, or celiacs disease being a gluten intolerance, or how to treat dehydration with rehydration salts - but most of those things are going to be of severely limited use unless you're in a position to be a) able to fund the necessary work/resources required (do YOU know how to make a ribbed wash board from scratch? Can you afford to commission someone to figure it out? ORS requires salt and sugar, which were both valuable trade commodities for most of history), b) likely to be listened to/believed on a big enough scale to make a difference (random time travellers are unlikely to arrive with a convenient built in high ranking backstory, and good luck being a woman/foreigner/persecuted minority of the day/peasant), and c) in an era with enough tech to actually use your knowledge effectively (even after the effects of foxglove extract were known by the 'establishment' - ie 'educated' westerners and not just 'wise women' - it took DECADES to identify and refine the actual compounds involved to the degree they're used in modern medicine).
If you're lucky you might be able to kick-start certain avenues of research, but generally the tech base of wherever you end up is going to seriously limit the impacts you're likely to have over anything but the very long term. The celiacs thing might be doable, and would definitely be a legacy worth leaving, but you'd need access to multiple babies with actual celiacs (something impossible to diagnose accurately besides 'do they respond to a gluten free diet?' before modern medical technology) AND be able to correctly identify all the foods containing gluten AND all the gluten free foods necessary for a healthy diet - which may not even be available - AND be able to get the parents to agree to your suggestion AND have the results be persuasive enough for the idea to spread.
Honestly the biggest advantage you'd have is that *you* would know things like germ theory and be therefore obsessive over things like boiling all your drinking water, and therefore would have a slightly above average chance of not dying of disease, but honestly I doubt that would be as much of an advantage as you might imagine, because your *won't* know how to do any of the things everyone around you does by default, like how to function in a world without electric lights or plumbing or fridges or sticky plasters or washing machines or hobs.
Personally (with the assumption you have a strong enough memory and you don't have dyscalculia) I think mathematics would be the best option here - there's so many scientific and engineering innovations that were roadblocked until humans had the right maths to underpin them. Even just being able to introduce statistical modelling because you can calculate change over time or more accurate navigation because you can calculate more accurate movement over the curve of the Earth would be huge. Plus mathematics, including all the tools you'd need to build out further, like the 0 or the decimal place, are perfectly portable since (with the aforementioned strong enough memory) you can just store them mentally
Thinking about the whole "there is no platonic explanation for this" thing and how it doesn't account for intense platonic situationships and anyways I think we should start saying "there is no casual explanation for this" bc really what we're talking about is the way the characters in question are Obsessed with each other
If Ratatouille mechanics were real, there would be a whole market of businesses offering the services of operating rats to people who want them, and it'd be like how bees produce honey. People in the rat business would be so exhausted of having to explain over and over again that no, the rats aren't being exploited. If the rats didn't like how they're being treated, they would simply not return. There's no goddamn way to force a rat to be so passionate about playing the saxophone that they'll figure out how to puppeteer a human to do it for them. All that the business does is finding a way to put that specific rat in the hair of someone who's about to go on stage.
The rats 100% think the businesses are being run for their benefit and worry about the humans being exploited.
A rat manager who is a rat and deals on their end of the deal is exhausted of having to explain over and over again that look, an average fully grown adult human being is like 200 times your weight, their hands are very fast and they can throw things better than you want to imagine. If one of them things didn't want you in their hair, you're not going to stay there for long. You'd be yote out the window in two seconds flat.
The really funny thing about "snakes aren't mammals your snake girl shouldn't have breasts!" is like yeah. Neither should your cat girl.
The fact that this is the line drawn is really funny! Human breasts are actually incredibly rare among mammals! We don't know exactly why humans have big bazongas but it's probably sexual selection, which presents the really funny problem
If your snake women having sex with people is normal and expected...then yeah, they're ALSO probably going to have something resembling breasts. They might even just have breasts in all but function.
Like yes, non-mammals don't make milk, but you actually don't need the whole kit that humans do in order to make milk. Arguably its not even the important part of the breast to begin with.
You also don't need to justify it at all you can just be a pervert about it.
We actually have another theory why human breasts are like that, and it's because of our flat faces.
Most mammals have, compared to humans, an elongated jaw. So a little tiny bump of a mammary gland is fine, just enough to get the nostrils away from the teat, and the young can freely breathe while nursing. However, as humans started using fire more and more to cook food - which softened it up, rendering powerful jaws less necessary - their jaws began to shorten, resulting in the development of the chin and other unique facial structures as the face flattened out.
This, of course, meant that babies could suffocate while nursing, which would obviously be bad. But what if... what if nipple further from chest? Bigger bump, so baby's nose have spot to go that isn't directly into mommy's chest? Oh, turns out that works! Of course, as more and more fat stores become dedicated to growing that breast mound to keep baby from suffocating, it becomes harder and harder for the mother to reabsorb that tissue when not nursing (as many other mammals do), so they just... don't. Knockon effects from there, and bam. Tiddies.
Which means if your cat girl has a flat face she probably should still have boobs but if she's got the full muzzle, not so much.
