nora started the car with a roll of her eyes. “okay, so you were doing a favor for humanity and now i can barely afford rent,” she said bluntly, although the smile playing on her lips contradicted the harshness of her voice. “it’s fine, your mom never has to know. besides, i doubt it’ll be the last time i do something like this for you, if you continue acting like a superhero.”

“Seriously, thank you for bailing me out. I promise I’ll pay you back for it.” He said, still slightly guilty over the other having to go out of their way to help him. “And I’m not that bad, give me some credit. I like to think I only bend the rules when it really matters. So I’d be an anti-hero, if anything.”

“Please. You’re a life-saver.” He grinned, leaning heavily on the counter with a tired sigh. “I hate morning shifts. I’m so tired.” He whined, with just the barest hint of petulance. He’d been called up at seven in the morning to open the store, which hadn’t exactly been a pleasant wake-up call. Jerking upright suddenly at the mention of cupcakes, he brightened considerably, forgetting his exhaustion for a few seconds. “Cupcakes? Shut up, I’m sure they taste great. I’ll take two, please.” He reassured him, giving him his best puppy dog eyes.

“That’s what they all say.” He smiled widely, looking down at the other male as he half lay on the counter and he begun to pour him a coffee. Bodhi had always been a morning person, so early morning shifts were never a big deal for him - he mostly loved the way he saw the sunset shining down on the glass windows across from the cafe, the blues and oranges a colour he only wished he could paint the same, though he’d do it no justice - no matter how many times he tried to copy it onto the takeaway cups. “Let me know how they taste.” He nodded once, setting the two cupcakes down in front of him as well as his coffee, a satisfied but prepared-for-cupcake-criticism smile gracing his cheeks.

"Oh? Do you get that a lot then? Everybody in town just throwing themselves at your feet for your coffee?" He gave the other a mischievous smile, eyes squeezing shut in amusement. Pulling his cup towards him first, he took a large gulp, whining as the hot liquid burned his throat. "Ow, hot! Hot! But so good." Pretending to consider the cupcakes critically, he took a bite before humming thoughtfully before cracking into another bright smile. "They're good. Could use more chocolate, though." He commented, only half-jokingly.

“What do you mean I look like shit? Are you talkin’ about the dark circles under my eyes? What the fuck, honestly, I thought concealer was supposed to work.” he mumbled. “I saw Lights Out a couple of days ago and since then I’ve been sleeping with the lights on – and by sleeping I mean tossing and turning until three in the morning, of course.”

"I didn't say that!" Davonte protested, looking mortified at the idea. "I just asked if you were feeling alright because you looked tired. And now I know why, I guess." He frowned, eyebrows drawing together in confusion. "What's 'Lights Out'? A scary movie?"

Davonte had to cover his mouth so the other wouldn’t see his lips twitching into a smile at his martyred expression. “You look fine to me. I mean, unless you want to lose weight then do what makes you happy, but you don’t have to. And you definitely shouldn’t kill yourself trying to drink whatever’s in that. I’m pretty sure that color’s not natural.”

“Let me tell you a secret,” Alexandre whispered. “To be honest with you, I just wanted to see what was so hard about going on a diet and from this tiny sip of this concoction, I finally realise that this juice thingy puts the DIE in DIET.” He huffed and forced himself to drain the rest of the contents in his glass. “Diet over. That was the hardest thing of my life. I hope to never have to do it again, oh god. Hmmm…. I do feel a bit slimmer though, huh.”

"Or you could just limit your portion sizes and... not drink the juice? I don't know, diets sound terrible. I know I couldn't do it, I love food too much." Davonte could only watch with a sort of horrified fascination as he watched the other chug the drink quickly, his face twisting in sympathetic disgust. "That was hard for me to watch, and I wasn't even the one drinking it. What did it taste like?" He asked, morbidly curious. "I... don't think that's it works." He said, trying to suppress his smile once again.

“FIRST OF ALL, I want to say it really wasn’t as bad as it sounded.” Davonte immediately defended himself as he slid into the car’s passenger seat, rubbing his wrists lightly. “I only broke one window, and that was because there was a dog trapped inside the car and it was like a hundred degrees outside. So really, I saved that dog. They should’ve thanked me instead of calling the cops.” He grumbled, subsiding in his protests. “But thanks for posting bail. I didn’t want to call my mom since she’d probably leave me there.”

“you broke someone’s window and expected them to not call the cops? you do realize that if they actually were worried about their dog they wouldn’t have left them like that in the first place?? you did the right thing, you just think too highly of people.” she signaled her hand for him to fasten his seatbelt. “i didn’t post bail, your mom did. i’m broke dude, and you needed out.”

"Well, when you put it that way, it just sounds stupid." He mumbled petulantly, sitting back in his chair and fastening his seat belt at her look. "But it was crying! I was reading about this dog that died because some cop left it in the car when it was hot while they were doing drills or something, and they tried to cool it down with ice and stuff and it was so sad. Like, why would you do that to a dog? Dogs do nothing but love you." He pouted, feeling sad just thinking about it again. His sadness lasted only a few seconds before he groaned, slumping over in his seat as he did his best to curl up and die right there. "Not my mom. I'm gonna have to hear it for weeks, now. Months."

He’d only needed milk for a late night bowl of cereal, Davonte despaired, when he was suddenly accosted by somebody on the way back home from a quick trip to the store. Flinching slightly away from the other at the abrupt intrusion on his personal space, he stiffened further when the stranger’s arm was suddenly around his shoulder. And yet, once he’d determined the other wasn’t trying to attack him, he had followed the other’s gaze around the street, finding himself too stricken to refuse. At least, until the guy had mentioned a ‘huge, scary looking dude’.

“Whoa, hold on.” He protested, shrugging off the arm on his shoulder and putting some distance between him and the stranger. “I’m really not interested in being somebody’s punching bag tonight. Or going to jail.” He said with a wrinkle of his nose.

I was going to be stuck for two more hours at my shift at Swirly’s, but they let me leave early, on account of a ‘family emergency’. — If anyone ever asks, you’re my adorable grandfather who got lost in the middle of town and couldn’t remember his own name,” she added, with a wide grin, turning her key to start the car.

"Oh. Really?" He deflated slightly, before he perked up, touched that she thought that much of him. "Well. Thanks. I wasn't sure. I mean, I thought I'd have to convince you to pick up a seasoned criminal like me." He said, trying his best to screw his face up into a sneer before cracking and dissolving into laughter. "Aww, you used your family emergency 'get out of work' card for me? I'm touched, really. I feel so loved." He said, dramatically pretending to wipe away a tear from his eye. "Seriously though, I'll pay you back for the bail." He said suddenly, more seriously this time.

"You know, they didn't really ask? They were more concerned with why I was holding a dog in one arm and a brick in the other. But then they eventually realized that the dog was really dehydrated and could've died, so I got let off with a warning since they would've faced animal cruelty charges if they'd tried to press any charges." He laughed at her expression, shaking his head. "Don't worry, I'll pay you back. Do you happen to accept plants or flowers, by any chance?" He lifted his shoulders, expression sheepish.

He'd seen the news about people literally mugging others over that game, so it wasn't a huge leap to think Yoyo might actually kill him over it. "did you catch anything at least?" He asked meekly, taking her advice to heart and immediately trying to forget it. at least until she gave him that wicked look, her words nearly stopping him cold. "you wouldn't." He said, not nearly as confident as he sounded.
