Ohio's mental health authority is trying to ban transgender healthcare - esp for people under 21 years of age, BUT they are asking for public input! Hurry, though, as it's only through 5pm local time (US Eastern Standard Time) on January 19th!

Changes to the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services rule, "5122-14-12 | Private Psychiatric Hospital: Program, Specialty Services, and Discharge Planning", are to prohibit any kind of transgender care for those under 21 in a psychiatric hospital. The rule includes the text, "Medical services shall not include any of the following: ...the prescribing, administering, or furnishing of any prescription drug or hormone...", which means if someone under 21 enters a private psychiatric hospital and who is already on puberty blockers or hormones, the doctors there would be prohibited from giving them the prescription they already have.

A new proposed rule for the same Ohio department, "5122-26-19 | Gender Transition Care" states the requirements for anyone needing transition care under this department. They are targeting the most vulnerable with these rules: young people who have mental health issues who also need transgender care. Full document here, but be aware it is to a pdf

Included in this rule: A doctor may only provide transgender care after three requirements have been met - a psychiatrist who has experience with the patient's age group must be employed by/contracted with the provider, an endocrinologist who has experience with the age group, and the provider has a comprehensive written plan that includes a detransitioning provision.

It also requires any such patient to have a thorough mental health evaluation and counseling period of at least 6 months prior to any transgender care. It also appears to become part of their medical record.

In addition to a ban on any transition surgeries, even if the patient jumps through all of those hoops, is a curious item that prevents doctors from referring patients out to other doctors that can provide care:

The terms "orchiectomy" and "penectomy" mean the removal of testicals and penis, respectively. The word "castration" could only be redundant or referring only to chemical castration, which seems to not fit in with gender reassignment surgery (correct me if you know it does fit). "Castration" is a scary word for most people with penises. I think it would likely provoke a knee-jerk response, like, "Oh, no, castration is bad. No castration! Enact these rules to keep people from being castrated!"

where was that thing about knife theory? because i need it. like spoons are great for energy levels. but knife theory needs to be developed more and used more in wider community. and not just in the punk way of fighting off ableists.

i mean like, knives bro. like a panic attack is a knife. a flashback is a knife. it’s not something you collect and lose/spend; it’s something that stabs you, hurts you.

a knife can also be like a big looming threat, or a scary challenge in the day/week/month.

see the thing about knife theory is that it is necessary in a different way to spoon theory. something that zaps energy leaves you without spoons, and you’re lost.

but sometimes disability doesn’t just drain energy but hurts, and you have to recognise that. many times i thought resting after a flashback would help, and i aided my energy levels but the mental damage and emotional distress/drainage was still there. you need to treat it as a danger, and tend to yourself; acknowledge the pain even if the knife will never come out. 🌹🌹

She has already normalised TERF arguments in UK politics to the point that they were used in Westminster (UK parliament) to prevent Holryood (Scottish parliament) from passing the Gender Recognition Reform Bill (GRR) several months ago, which would have made self-id more accessible, making trans lives easier and safer.

Why did Westminster think they had any right to do this when healthcare, including trans healthcare, is a devolved power? Because it supposedly undermined one of their other bills - The Equality Act 2010, specifically the part stating the rights for women to be safe and equal.

The PARLIAMENT argued that trans people being able to have the right gender recognition without years of invasive, "diagnostic" bullshit, was a danger to women. The parliament argued that trans rights were antithetical to women's rights. The people saying that were funded by her, using her words, benefitting off of her fear-mongering.

She has way too much money, she's getting more from people who "separate art from artist" or think "one indulgence isn't that bad", and she actively puts it into ruining queer lives. She hates us. She hurts us. It's her fault that the wrong name and gender is still on my ID. She has every intention of doing worse.

Boycott this monster if you really support queer people.

A while back I asked my GP if there was anything that could be investigated regards my seemingly worsening hearing problems (while I've always had auditory processing problems, hyperacusis has grown over time and tinnitus was new to me)

She said she'd arrange a referral, and shortly afterwards I got a text with a link to a document that had a phone number for me to call to make a hearing test appointment. I say again:

No other options, just the phone number. I tried Googling around it, and no, just the phone number and a street address.

I tried the phone number, and there was a lot of hold music—loud, Vivaldi (a lot of sudden up and down volumes and pitches, a real nightmare for me), interspersed with quiet moments in which in unclear voice would tell me how important it was, before hurting my ears with Vivaldi again. And I don't mean like "haha that music hurts my ears", I mean like, it hurts.

Eventually I gave up and figured I'd go to the physical place.

The receptionist had a mask and a speech impediment and there were fans whirring. Suffice it to say: the conversation was difficult.

Eventually I understood enough to understand: I could not make an appointment there, the only way was to call the phone number. To make a hearing test appointment.

Basically, the HoH equivalent of "if you need the key to the accessible toilet facilities, ask at the café upstairs"

i’m deaf. i’ve seen multiple audiologists in my life. these things have been true for every single one of them:

- either they exclusively communicate via phone or they give you the option for email but when you email them they respond with a phone call and if you insist on email they get Real Weird About It

- they do not know even basic sign language, not even things like “yes” or “no”. your average deaf infant has a better grasp on sign language than any of the audiologists i’ve met

- they refuse to communicate in writing during your appointments and insist on communicating verbally even though they KNOW EXACTLY HOW BAD YOUR HEARING IS BECAUSE THEY TESTED IT

many medical professionals are blatantly ableist and in my experience that extends very very much to audiologists

Story is wild

Little girl was part of a county fair agro-educational program where they raise an animal for a few months and at the end it’s slaughtered. Supposed to teach them about the economics of farming and stuff.

But the little girl loved her goat so much she was crying on the day her goat was supposed to be taken away, so her mom sent the county fair people an email saying “I’ll pay for the goat and any expenses. We’ve had several deaths in the family in the past year, I don’t wanna take away one more thing my little girl loves.” Technically the goat had already been sold at auction, so the mom was on the hook for about $1000, only about $70 of which would have been profit for the county fair.

The county fair people were irate and got law enforcement involved, over this “breach of contract”. They literally got a fucking judge to sign a search warrant, authorizing them to go to this little girl’s house and search every room and every cabinet or box “large enough to contain a small goat”. The sheriff’s deputies seized the goat, and whoever they gave it to immediately slaughtered it, though they were supposed to wait until some kind of agreement had been worked out.

In the county fair’s initial email correspondence with the girl’s mother, they made it clear that they were pissed off because the story of the little girl who loved her goat was circulating on social media making them look bad, and they felt the girl needed to be taught a lesson about keeping your promises or whatever. So they refused the mother’s offer to pay for it, and insisted they get the goat. Even if it meant sending the fucking cops into her house lmao.
