Spoonie/Disabled-Friendly Halloween Ideas 🎃👻🦴
With help from @i-cant-feel-my-foot !
Watch spooky movies
Put up easy decorations, e.g. plastic spiders, paper bats & ghosts, spooky stickers, googly eyes (stick ‘em everywhere for maximum fun)
Play candy bingo with supermarket coupon books
Tell scary stories with friends
Low-spoon spooky food ideas:
decorate store-bought cookies (with m&m’s, frosting, sprinkles, etc.)
peeled orange + bell pepper stem = really cute easy pumpkin
pretzel stick dipped in green chocolate + almond fingernail = creepy fingers
milanos + frosting lettering = tombstones
whipped cream + 2 chocolate chip eyes = ghost
peeled banana + 2 chocolate chip eyes = ghost friend
marshmallows + 2 chocolate chip eyes = so many ghosts!
make kettle corn with green food dye (”why is it green???”)
just buy gummy worms, let’s be real. put ‘em in some pudding cake if you’re really feeling it.
Paint or sharpie on a pumpkin if you can’t carve
If you can’t paint or carve pumpkins, buy a mini pumpkin & come up with a name & personality for them
Scare abled people
Get some spooky stickers & decorate your mobility aids (googly eyes can also come in here)
PLEASE add on!!! It’s hard to think of ideas that accommodate all needs, so the more ideas we get on here, the more people who can benefit from the list! (we need some accessible costume ideas, if you’re not sure what to add)
October Self-care!
Here’s a short list of comforting activities to do this October! These range from basic self-care to luxurious so there should be something for everyone.
- snuggle up with blankets and pillows
- try a new recipe, even if it’s just adding spices to your hot chocolate
- pick your own pumpkin (bonus for supporting local growers!)
- journal, particularly gratitude journaling if you suffer from seasonal depression
- stay hydrated!
- eat! trying a new dinner idea once a week is a good way to keep food interesting if you have the money.
- go on an autumn stroll (keep cosy if it’s cold out and pre-plan an accessible route if you need to)
- write a list of things you need to do this month and challenge yourself to tick at least ½ off
- set yourself achievable goals
- read a scary or autumn-y book
- try to have at least one day completely off your phone even if this is broken up into hour-long blocks across the month
- have a candle-lit bubblebath or a luxurious shower
- invest in light therapy if the darker months get you down
- change your bedcovers or buy new seasonal ones
- try a new craft such as knitting
- change your phone background
Did you know October is Dysautonomia awareness month? Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is the most common type of dysautonomia, yet hardly anyone, including doctors, knows about it!
Reblog to spread awareness!
disabled culture is doubling over because you're constantly getting sharp pains in your gut
.
Chronically ill culture is being told to drink some water and you'll feel better even though you're still just as sick no matter how much you drink
.
2018-01-18, Inside My Stomach, by Trine Watkins
I ate a banana the other day and I had the worst cramps afterwards omg. This is probably what went down in my stomach that night.
Bitches with chronic illness be like "wow my condition is getting better ! That must mean it'll stay like this forever from now on !" Only to be very disappointed the next week
Im bitches
I think I just realized why I need to eat so much salt-
it must be to exorcise the demons invading my body
a coping mechanism for potsies who are into the ocean/fantasy!!!!!
you’re a mermaid. you need to eat lots of salt? bc you’re a mermaid out of salt water! you need to drink lots of water? you’re a mermaid and you need to keep hydrated while you’re not at sea! your veins don’t constrict as they should when you stand up? because they’re used to being assisted by water pressure!!
i love mermaids and i thought of this earlier, this honestly helps me a lot, and i hope it helps someone else too!!
Maybe this has to be said, even though really it shouldn’t.
If you see a disabled person out alone, they are out alone because they know how to take care of themselves.
If they couldn’t look after themselves for whatever reason, they wouldn’t be out alone; they’d be out with a carer.
If they ask then obviously they do need a little assistance but it’s likely that the assistance is needed not from an inability to do the thing, but do the thing without accomodations they rely on.
But in general, disabled people who are out alone probably don’t need you help.
Do I register at Walgreens or a CVS for this little guy 🎉
remember, when you have a day when dealing with your health gets all too overwhelming that you can stop, take a break, take care of yourself, and start again tomorrow. there is nothing wrong with taking life one moment at a time
