Rumir header by my lovely partner @tealirae! <3
I'm winging the pattern as I go so it took a lot of trial and error but I'm happy with how the body shaping and his hair turned out!!! Just need to give him a second leg and then I can start on Phil (and then their outfits)
my personal favorite "ryland grace is so infatuated with this fucking rock that it's actively breaking his brain" moment, from chapter twenty-nine:
So that’s what I’m left with. Option 1: Go home a hero and save all of humanity. Option 2: Go to Erid, save an alien species, and starve to death shortly after.
I pull on my hair.
I sob into my hands. It’s cathartic and exhausting.
All I see when I close my eyes is Rocky’s dumb carapace and his little arms always fidgeting with something.
I don't know why I still make these recordings. I think they'll just depress both of us if I make it home to deliver them. But as you're very fond of reminding me I'm a stubborn asshole when I want to be.
Which is always.
A few days ago, I learned what a party was in human culture. Or whatever the hell these 'Americans' are that Grace keeps reminding me they are. We went up to their picture room and they showed me something called 'fireworks'. They sound like when something explodes. But humans fill them with chemicals to make 'colourful' patterns. The shapes are very nice sometimes. You'd like them.
Then Grace gave me their small thinking machine. You're gonna love it, if there's as much human science on it as Grace says.
When I asked if I could give them anything, Grace wanted to see the Ship. You'll be very proud of me, I made them a suit and let them in...I didn't take them into the sleeping chambers. They don't need to see that.
I'm not sure what triggered it, but you know about Grace's shitty memory by now. They froze up when I was explaining the family names on the mission plaque. When they came back to themselves...
Grace does not think I heard, as they do not realize how loud they are, but I heard them whisper that they were a coward. At the time, I didn't know what that meant...but this thinking machine helped me. I am learning how to read Grace Speaks Language, and found out that 'coward' means 🎶.
If I wasn't so confused, I'd remind them that they were the one who did who fucking knows how many spacewalks to save two planets, one of which they only know through some shitty engineers stories.
Skies...I don't think Grace came because they wanted to.
I didn't have it in me to tell the real reason I'm here. That I'm also a coward. Beyond that, I'm selfish. I was so scared I'd screwed things up for us, I decided to go. For what? The promise that all was forgiven? I'm no heroic space explorer. I'm a terrible mate. If I could somehow bring them back, I'd introduce you to Grace. They'd be so much better than I ever was...
Fuck, I'm sorry.
I'm so so sorry.
I love you. If I get home, I'll do everything in my power to make things well and truly right. You've stayed with me through every stupid thing I've ever done. You're the most incredible mate someone could ever ask for.
...I miss Grace.
They left two days ago. I've been using my readouts to look for the flash of their engines. The Hail Mary is so tiny. I wish you could have been here too. The two of you would love each other, with all the scientific knowledge they have.
If all goes well? I'll be there soon. Maybe...maybe we can finally talk about laying a clutch. Heh...I'm sure your folks will nearly pass out, hearing me say that. They've only been begging us for what...fifty years before I left?
This is going on for too long. I love you, Skies.
Your Mate,
Rocky- I mean, Tenacity.
Sorry. Too used to Grace's name for me. Hope they never find out the name I recorded in their device means dipshit.
<END RECORDING>
(i don't know what possessed me, I just wanted to write something from Rocky's perspective.)
Little bittersweet Grocky drabble on the way to Erid (sidenote, this is not how I actually think the trip went persay, I'm just dicking around)
--
Rocky quietly slid his hand over Grace's forehand. "Grace is so pretty..."
The man cracked a wry smile. And the choice of words here isn't metaphorical. His malnutrition dried out his lips terribly. They would split at the slightest inconvenience. "I thought you promised not to lie to me."
The glittering panels of Rocky's new suit caught the ship lights. Freezing them into stars. He gave a low, frustrated huff. "Rocky is not lying. Grace is beautiful. Even like this...especially like this."
"You've never seen other humans. I look like a corpse."
"Why you not want me call you nice things? Rocky knows Grace looks like dying!" His friend practically hissed. "I not saying this for you! Saying it for me. Grace is so strong, so resilient, and all Rocky can do is feed you! Clean you, keep you from laying in one place too long. Rocky feels useless. Grace must keep spirit up, so what you expect from Rocky, question?!"
That punctuation rattled the nearby figures that Rocky had made to keep him entertained. "...Oh. I'm sorry..."
He hears a sound that he hated. Over the nearly four years they've been together, he'd learned what it meant. A weak, reedy gurgling.
Rocky was crying.
"Hey...hey, please don't beat yourself up." Grace carefully sat up, ignoring how badly it hurts. "You're incredible. You're the only reason I'm alive, Rocky. You aren't useless. I promise you aren't."
He gently placed his forehead on the smooth xenonite. "I love you, buddy."
Rocky froze. "You...love Rocky...question?"
"More than anything." The man held him close. "If you want to call me pretty, I won't argue."
A few clicks, something to the effect of clearing his throat. "Grace is prettiest corpse Rocky ever seen."
Grace laughed. "And you claim you don't get human jokes."
(very important to note, Grace isn't starving in the traditional sense. He's suffering from malnutrition.)
"Why are you being weird?" Rocky cocked his carapace. "Just ask."
"Shut up, it's embarrassing!" Grace ducked his head, for what little that would do. Rocky could see through his skeleton if he really wanted to.
"I cleaned up after you for your entire recovery period." The Eridian reminded him. "Seen your sh-"
"Okay! You don't need to go into detail!" Grace's voice was so keyed up it was nearly a squeak.
"Ask."
"Well it's just..." He faltered for a moment. "I saw you hunting earlier."
"You spied on me?! I ate!" Now it was Rocky's turn to be horrified.
"I didn't watch you eat!" Grace held up his hands in a sign of submission. "Just hunt!"
Rocky gave a suspicious rumble, but hummed for him to continue.
"I...It was reallyattractive..." The man trailed off, face beet red.
That took a moment for his friend to process. Then...then his song dropped into that beautiful register. The one he used when flirting with Adrian (and himself). "You want to be prey?"
His heart is thundering. Rocky noticed. He calmly approached Grace, hooking a finger through one of his belt loops. For control, not to remove. "I dunno...I'm a pretty good hunter."
"I-I'm an apex predator too!" He hates how his voice trembled.
"You ever had to catch your food?"
He refused to answer that.
Rocky doesn't mind. He chuckled, deep enough that Grace can feel it. "You go hide. We'll see who the better hunter is."
They really were an odd couple.
(Look, I regularly write for yautja, and sometimes y'all need to remember that Eridians are scary good predators while humans are very out of practice XD)

Rocky darted out of the way. The door shut with a decisive whirr-click.
The endless glug-thud-squelch of Ryland Grace's body seemed very loud in the small room. He made a noise that sounded like, "Huh?"
"Grace and Adrian talk now," Rocky commanded. They pointed one arm at them. "Talk until both normal."
"What?" Adrian said, baffled.
Rocky clattered several claws against the ground, a discord of pique. "You are both annoying! Always polite, polite, polite. Bland. Empty."
In which Adrian and Grace haven't really been getting along, and Rocky takes matters into his own claws.

have we considered a grockdrian scenario wherein adrian falls in love with grace in what is considered pretty fast for eridian standards… except it is unfortunately nowhere near fast enough for the human lifespan?
think about it. rocky and grace's bond is something impossible to measure up to. after all they went through, they latched onto each other in almost no time at all. their love is one of a kind, and it's just not something that can be replicated.
adrian knows this. they know that they will never be able to love grace the way rocky does, and perhaps grace will never love them the way he loves rocky.
but that's fine. for now, they can make room in their life for him. and maybe someday, they can learn to love grace.
and, for a while, things are okay. rocky has two mates, and those two mates get along. maybe a little begrudgingly from adrian's end, but grievances fade with time.
they get to know each other. adrian talks to grace regularly. starts calling him a friend, at some point.
then, the feelings start. they're slow, creeping up on them over the years. a small twinge of something when grace smiles. a stutter of their hearts' rhythm when grace laughs. lingering whenever rocky and grace hug. straining to listen to the soft sounds of them kissing.
but it's nothing, right? they push those feelings aside. not because they're suppressing them, but because they attribute affection to fascination—they mistake their love for curiosity. they think grace is a scientific interest, and they think that for a long time...
by the time adrian realizes they're in love with grace, grace is on his deathbed.
he is old, frail and plagued with the many illnesses that come with age. he forgets many things now. sometimes he doesn't recognize rocky or adrian. still, he smiles at them all the same.
adrian has spent the last few decades studying the human body, tracing the features of grace's face, mapping the curve of his smile.
it is only then that they realize: this is an infatuation that goes beyond the sciences. they've fallen in love with grace.
why now? why not a century from now, when the memory of grace will be but a plesant ache settling in their appendages? why not decades before this, when grace was still at his physical peak, when they still had the rest of his life to spend together?
why now?
why did they fall in love with grace after he already spent an entire lifetime waiting for them? why did they reach out to grasp at an opportunity that already passed them by?
why did they realize what they had to lose just as they were about to lose it?
