Of all the weird contrivances that superhero media have by virtue of genre, I think the no-kill rule is one of the easiest to justify. "Why don't these paragons of virtue extrajudicially murder people?" fuck dude, I wonder.

Me learning to appreciate grids. I've never been much of a grid guy, but you know what? Grids can be good sometimes.
My initial design for Matt was very much based on Charlie Cox, but I didn't want to seem like I was doing fanart for the tv show specifically (which I haven't seen except in short clips on youtube). It's interesting there is a lot of variety in how different artists draw him, so I did feel I had some freedom to make a new version. Please notice the silly little devil horns that I lovingly incorporate into his hair.
I also want to thank the city of New York for writing the biblical references for me when it came to the name of the hospital.
For whatever reason, my brain keeps tricking itself into thinking Daredevil has a little tail, so I present an AU where he’s a mutant.

Local Boy Reads Paper, Unimpressed With Print Media
Do you think Clark Kent's first few major articles were about the continued presence of lead pipes in parts of Metropolis' water system
(Average Metropolis reader after investigative reporter C. Kent's 452nd article on yet another case of landlords/business owners/factories' continued use of lead pipes/paint/gas/glass knowingly exposing the public to dangerously toxic lead levels) what the fuck happened to this guy
One day Bruce Wayne mentions in an interview that heroes like Superman are overrated, as the most effective way to reduce crime is to provide public resources and improve local infrastructure, then cites how neighboring city Metropolis has effectively lowered their violent crime by 13% after addressing their outdated water system and investing low income housing. the reporter conducting the interview suddenly starts looking a little uncomfortable
To be clear, Clark is still a fantastic investigative reporter. He still has to track down the sources to prove all this shit
"Who, Clark Kent? Yeah, we're pretty sure he's a Meta. Is he a superhero? Like what, "Lead-detector guy"? "Captain pipes?" Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy and it's a handy trick, but it's lead detection, not laser vision. He's not about to go running around in tights any time soon."
I just love the idea of a cape maintaining their secret identity by pretending to be a completely different and less impressive kind of parahuman.
everyone assumes that kent is so squirrely around superheros because he’s just desperately hoping not to be conscripted to the JLA to fix their plumbing
i think the thing about batman's no kill rule is that its essentially bruce saying "guilty people don't deserve to be murdered on the street either, actually." and he's not wrong.
#batman's no kill rule has so many good layers and so few people want to engage with it beyond 'I think it's dumb'#and that includes actual batman writers who have given the stupidest reasons for its existence#like there's the logistical level#if batman starts killing then he is going to have more problems dealing with the law and public opinion than he already has#then there's the personal checks and balances level#bruce is already a fuckoff wealthy genius if he starts killing that's an additional layer of power he has to trust himself with#i think there are similar reasons behind why he never tries to take public office or start his own 'criminal' syndicate to push out others#so THAT is the level where it works as a cautionary 'don't become like them' thing because bruce is already too powerful#and too fixated on controlling things. if he gives himself additional leeway to take more power & control he's gonna lose it#like someone who knows they've got an addictive personality refusing to even touch cigarettes or slot machines because haha NO#then there's the ethical level of people don't deserve to be killed on the street#and also batman specifically doesn't *want* to kill#like yeah maybe in the moment he gets mad enough at the joker or someone that he could kill them#but in general part of the whole reason he does this is because he doesn't want people to die he wants them to get help#and in a super hero and villains universe part of meeting ppl where they're at is putting on a costume and solving their death puzzle

Sorry for not posting your boy started uni
Superman really said love and kindness are punk rock, seeing beauty in everyone and everything is punk rock, being imperfect and human is punk rock, and he is right.
clark shouting "people were going to DIE" in the face of the "think of the consequences of your actions" argument is so fucking important to me bc it really IS that simple you can't look at a genocide and just twiddler your thumbs bc you're a afraid of the consequences ESPECIALLY when you can do something about it and THATS WHAT CLARK DID. WITHOUT HESITATION. WITHOUT CONSIDERING HOW IT COULD HURT HIM. bc hes a good person and in his brain its really just people were going to die so i had to step in bc what else would it be. superman i love you i love you i love you
I loved this scene so much because like, Lois raises some very good points. And in a lot of real ways, clark’s actions could lead to more death. Like, what if that jump-started a war involving the us? Or a sokovia-accords style panic ovwr meta-humans? Or if he can only ever temporarily hold off a war that grows in brutality for the delay?
but clarks response of “people were going to die” is so valuable because in a way thats the appeal of superman. When theres a building fire, or a hostage situation, or a war, its almost a given that people will die. And even our remedies have their own costs and consequences. But superman is invulnerable, he has super speed, super strength, he’s always there. Hes an appeal to the part of us that always wants an answer without pointless death , that just wants to save things and go “but people will die” and damn the consequences.
Superman and superhero fiction are an escapism but also a reminder. That we want a solution to the horrible things in the world, that we care about the lives of everyone. And that sometimes even the consequences arent what matters, or that accepting them is worth it, or that its okay to just know that we want to be irrational and desperate and see a better end because isnt that a beautiful human thing, that we care about each other, that at the end of the day the lengths we can go for that are astounding
I also saw a video where someone was explaining why they thought this scene was so important to Lois’s character as well. Often the female love interest in superhero movies is the voice of “you shouldn’t have done that, think of the consequences” and usually what happens is the hero/vigilante just quietly accepts that but keeps going anyway. But in this scene, Clark is allowed to get angry, and disagree, and keep doing what he does anyway. Lois is questioning Clark’s actions and Clark is allowed to defend what he believes in instead of accepting it.
it also works a lot better for Clark and Lois’s dynamic in general, because it puts them on more even footing — yes, Lois is the realist and Clark is an idealist, but they’re both allowed to question each others beliefs and it helps them grow in their own. The difficulties in their relationship, and the ideologies those difficulties represent, aren’t restricted to one of them, they both grapple with them at different points in the movie. and despite disagreeing sometimes, they’re still there for each other when it counts! Lois saves Superman and comforts him when he’s alone in his apartment, etc.
It’s just makes the whole relationship so much more interesting and lets viewers develop their stance as well — because they’re both presented as having beliefs with flaws, but they’re equally allowed to fight for them while still coexisting. (which is also interesting considering the current trend of polarized politics caused social divides and/or making people see each other as inhuman.)
Clark and Lois are allowed to hold different beliefs about their role in the world and it doesn’t prevent them from fighting for what’s right or from being with each other. They’re allowed to challenge each other, disagree with each other, and love each other!
